@ Emma Dean. The only reason Zeppo was in the Marx Brothers' films was to provide the audience with a temporary relief from the comic zanniness of Groucho, Harpo and Chico by adding a romantic element to their movies with whatever beautiful actress his character was involved (or trying to get involved) with romantically. According to Groucho, Zeppo was not a very nice man in his personal life. Supposedly Zeppo was one of the inventors/creators of the pocket-sized cigarette lighter. Supposedly he made a huge profit on the manufacture and/or sale of cigarette lighters.

A time when the director knew where to aim the camera.
Watch a music video today, and all you see are dancers and singers, and almost always performing to a studio recording (lip syncing).
You almost never see the band members creating the music. You never get to see their talented fingers.
Of course Chico and Harpo had tremendous talent, and this scene allowed us to see it without any camera theatrics or special effects. Just raw talent, and we had a front seat view.
Today, talented artists have been replaced with computer generated scenes and all manner of studio processing -- it just isn't real. Whereas, this scene is real, and is why it is great.

Groucho was the best read man in show business. His private collection of books gave him what would otherwise be an enviable college education. Chico was a math whiz, but he used it to figure long odds and wound up losing far more than he could ever win. His gambling addiction cost the brothers hundreds of thousands of dollars. Harpo was simply a lovely man, who lived the life he portrayed. He wasn't innocent, but he was just a sweet person whose love for children and animals was only surpassed by his love of music. He was another genius in the family, but practically illiterate.

At 4:20 in the 1935 classic, "A Night at the Opera" with Groucho asking: "Don't you know what duplicates are?" Chico: "Yeah, there are 5 kids up in Canada!" Refers to the recently-born (1934) Dionne quintuplets, then a worldwide sensation, for it was the first time a woman gave birth to 5 babies who lived past infancy.

Their act was honed by years toughing it out on the vaudeville circuit. Every movie of theirs had a two-scene between Groucho and Chico, and some kind of friendship between Chico and Harpo. When you look at it that way, Chico was the glue holding the act together. They were all brilliant at what they did, though. There's never been a better trio in show business.
