Re-watching snippets of this drama. It’s been awhile so I’m forgetting some of the characters’ names. I love her friend and uncle (?). They immediately joke around using “Lu” and “Jin” when she specifically doesn’t want to be reminded of him. Hahahha! Love it!
How did he expect her to react after he just sat there and watched that horrible woman try to humiliate Shengnan. Fussy Lu needs to stop being a cowardly AHole and shine his spine so he can stand up to both the horrible woman AND his controlling mother.
This série is very good. The romance between an old man and a young girl is described on a singular way. The love is similar the time. It is not important when you love and respect each other.

He's a grown man, seriously successful businessman, wealthy because of his skill and expertise in acquiring businesses and real estate and his personal assistant is still telling him to go home and be with his mother and he doesn't put her in her place. The spineless guy has boundaries he won't cross and won't allow others to cross when it comes to business, but his personal life gets invaded, critiqued, judged and corrected by both his female PA and his mother 24/7 and he just agrees with what is said and doesn't stand up for himself. As for his mother being 'old', wtheck? She's not old, but she *is* nosy, grotesquely intrusive, cruel, intentionally malicious, rude, insulting, shameless, interfering, dictatorial, condescending, emotionally frozen in time from when he was a child, and unbending in keeping him tied to her corporate apron strings. How audacious of that PA to tell him to 'go home'. Imagine if he *was* romantically interested in her like she desperately wants him to be and they married? Would she be telling him when to brush his teeth before bed and to wash his hands before a meal like a small child needs reminding? Who left her in charge of his personal life and his person? After seeing her in action, he still doesn't reprimand her for sabotaging the chef? Whether or not he's interested in the chef, he knew full well something wasn't quite right in that presentation: all he had to do was look at the chef's face to know something slimy was going on just below the surface of the conversation and he chose to look away from it all and let it sort itself out. Shengnan may be much younger than Fussy Lu, but she has a moral compass and she knows how to set boundaries and maintain them: he could learn a lot from her if he'd only open his eyes and grow a spine. How much time have they wasted because he refuses to see what is right in front of him: an emotionally dead mother who bullies everyone in her path, a lusting and infatuated female personal assistant, a traitorous/jealous brother and an amazing young woman full of life and sass and righteousness and he plays into all the head games expecting Shengnan to just go along with it all, including her mistreatment by fellow chefs and her manager, not have any feelings, accept him for who/what/how he is but he refuses to do the same for and with her. She isn't the one who needs to mature: he is. He makes promises he doesn't keep, he plays head games with her, he stands her up with lame excuses and never apologizes sincerely, he stalks her, he invites himself to her home and makes her cook for him, he builds her up and then pulls the rug out from her and never thinks the day will come when she's had enough of his childish ways and wants him far away from her, he moves into her building right next door so he can intimidate and stalk her and scare off anyone else interested in dating her so he's bullying her like his mother bullies him and her. He asks her nothing to get to know her yet he infiltrates her home neighborhood and the people she has cherished from her childhood but still knows absolutely nothing about what makes her tick. This self-absorbed, egotistical, arrogant, boorish man needs a wake up call if he thinks he's ready to court a woman of any age, let alone a vibrant, quick-witted, fun, exceptional, unique woman like Shengnan. His mother has him stuck in an emotional time warp and if he wants Shengnan, a young, vivacious, firecracker of a woman that makes him feel alive for the first time in 20-25 years, he better get with the program.
This series is so interesting to me because it's really Lu Jin's story, not Shengnan's. He is the one having to experience a massive shift, as he's been stuck in an emotional time warp, as you so clearly put it. Li Man telling him to go home to his mother is a final act of desperation on her part, I think. He won't eat her food, he ignores her provocative wardrobe, he knows damn well she was trying to intimidate Shengnan (that final look her gave her before leaving to "go to the restroom" spoke volumes), and she's got nothing left to try to get him back to Switzerland except a guilt trip about his mother. And he blew off her attempt at that, too. I still can't quite figure out why he tried to sugarcoat Li Man's actions to Shengnan; maybe because he's very conflicted, and not quite ready to admit to himself that he's fallen for her, but in this scene she nails him to the wall on it and it forces the shift that's needed. Clever writing. That said, the guy doesn't yet know how to handle himself around Shengnan at this point. He has just taken the first big step in admitting his feelings to himself deciding to pursue her, something he has no experience doing. I actually thought his move into the apartment next door was clever, since she won't take his phone calls and he can't hang around the hotel kitchen all day, and he needs some way to interact with her. One of the first things he tried to do was politely ask her on a date for the weekend, and that backfired. But since his money means nothing to her, and it's been the only tool he's ever needed with his past girlfriends, his attempts to get close to her are going to be awkward and kind of cringe-y, and definitely a little uncomfortable to watch. Meng knows far more about dating than his boss. Thank god he's a foil in the story; imagine if Fussy Lu was going it alone.
