Currently in school and was trying to find an alternative due to my licensing running out soon too. So that statement you made helped me out a lot, thank you.
While I have yet to actually nail down the "how" - there's a way you can scan the part (2D flat bed scanner!), import the image into F360 and make your Sketch from it (like you were using copy paper). Then accurately measuring a point you scale the drawing you just made to those/that measurement. I've seen it done, and it saved a LOT of measuring and drawing details. I really need to get that nailed down.
Gotta love the TH-cam algorithm machine! No sooner did I type the above comment... I got a recommended of this: th-cam.com/video/iaUMYRP3CxA/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=AMCustomfab which shows exactly how to do what I (lamely) described.
In cases where I have to model a part and don’t have access to it in person, I’ve asked people to take pictures of the part with a ruler laying next to it. Then I use a portion of the ruler for scale like you mentioned. It’s surprisingly accurate, and I imagine doing it with an actual scanner would be even better. I haven’t done that with fusion360 specifically, but I’ve done it a couple times in Solidworks
@@SUPERMOTIVE if the part is too much bigger than this piece the camera will distort the dimensions..... i tried it on an exhaust flange.... basically a photo copier comes directly every point of the object while a photo image comes from only one
Great vid but I'm deaf now
For those wondering... this part was the bracket to mount a navigation light to a boat’s bimini top.
Holy fucking volume bro!

@@SUPERMOTIVE the only issue with that is the image taken has to be normal to the object else you get errored values
