so the matt varnish goes on at the very end after your done painting and then comes the gloss? And is there anything i need to apply on the doll before starting?
Thank you so much for the video response! I am getting my list together and I am so excited to start on my reborning adventure! I will pm you any questions that come up and really appreciate all your advise!!
Glad if this helps you Sheila. I know when I wanted to find a way to start "reborning"...I scoured the Internet and TH-cam especially to learn tips and techniques...and that helped ME so much...so I'm really pleased if my videos help others as well! I'm excited FOR YOU friend... I think you will have such a good time creating these little works of art yourself! Hugs Hon, Carla : )
Hi Carla. I am about to start my very first doll and love the idea of your technique which I am going to try but I was wondering why you use so many different mediums as your paint mixes. Is there a reason for using the different ones or can only one be used and if so which is best. Thank you, Marnie
+DOLL LADY Hi...thanks for your question. Here's an explanation I wrote earlier to another person...I think it will give the more detailed explanation you wanted. My PREFERRED fixative is Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium and when I have that, I will use for example, a dime-sized drop of paint...and the same sized drop of Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium...and the same sized drop of multi-purpose sealer...mixed well together... then thinned with distilled water to a very thin and watery consistency. But when Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium is not available (like when I've run out or new product hasn't arrived yet) I use some of these products instead...for example, in that case, I would use a dime-sized drop of paint...then a dime-sized drop of Mod Podge...then a dime-sized drop of Matte Varnish...then a dime-sized drop of multi-purpose sealer...and again mixed well together ...then thinned with distilled water to a very thin and watery consistency. After painting all of the coats of paint I want to do on my doll, I would finish with 1...if not 2...coats of the Dura Clear Ultra Matte Varnish (or I have since come across Americana Ultra Matte Varnish... which is now my preferred matte varnish) to give the doll a very nice matte finish. Then finally, I would use the Folk Art's Artist's Varnish Gloss to gloss the nails (both toes and fingers), lips, inside of nose (if shaded), ear folds, and inner and outer corners of the eye. I hope this helps settle any confusion. Hugs, Carla
Hello Carla, bought my first reborn, wanted to paint him as a ethnic baby, but I can't seem to get a consistent smooth paint flow, could you tell me what or how should I do my paint to get that consistency. Thank you
Hi...and thanks for the question. My best guess would be to experiment with your paints, sealers and water amounts. Mix up a small blend...and on an old vinyl doll...try that mixture out. If too thick...dilute...if too thin...add more paint (and if you add more paint, make sure to add a bit more of the sealers as well. It really is about finding the consistency that works best for your needs and areas where you are wanting to place it on your doll. I hope this helps. Carla :)
Yeah I love Liquitex, instead of your ultra matt I use matte medium from Liguitex also. Thank you for this video, now I know how to use them better. I´m a beginner. Can you tell me please, what do you use as a thinner? thank you.
Hi...and thank you so much for watching and taking time to comment! My only thinner I use is distilled water. Good luck on your reborning friend! Hugs, Carla :)
So do you apply the matte varnish all over the vinyl once it's done being painted, and then you apply the gloss to the nails and lips? thanks for sharing this. I'm switching to acrylics, it's so much easier and cheaper:)
Country Babies If you want "textured" skin...you can use it straight from the bottle. But for a smoother complexion, I thin it half water, and half ultra matte. Then I almost always put on 2 coats when I dilute it that way. Thanks for the question! Hugs, Carla :)

Hello I am trying to do this with the same products but the first time I used only mod podge and I did not put any of this all over her first. The paint just came off and did not adhere to some spots. What do you reccomend? What do you do to prepare the doll first? Thank You

Hello Carla, new subscriber😍.. I don’t have any idea for doll paintings please reply I’m waiting.. I have one Royal house of doll (Vinyl doll) the doll face is pale so I wanted to blushing her face cheeks only. So please suggest me simple tip and which paint should used for her cheeks. I’m wanted rosy cheeks so please tell me which one pinkish paint and paint name please mam? And how to apply..? Please please reply.. only cheeks for blushing that’s it..
Hi Saira. Since acrylic paints come in several shades that would make nice blush for the cheeks, just choose the "pink"...or "coral"...or "rose" color that suits your doll's complexion best. But to make it stick to vinyl, you have to add a "fixative"...and thin with 1/2 to equal amounts of water and mix well so that you can add cheek color in layers...allowing to dry in between layers to see how much color is there before adding more. I usually add cheek color (and other motteling) with a wedge cut from a sea sponge...or a cosmetic foam wedge that I've used a tweezer to pluck some of the foam out...so it leaves some "negative" places in the color you are applying...and I pounce the sponge lightly to get the effect I'm looking to achieve. If you look at my other reborning videos, I explain a bit more there...or in the comment section as I replied to questions or comments what I use as a "fixative"...but my preferred fixative is Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium...when I can get it. Hope this info helps...and good luck on personalizing your doll. Hugs, Carla :)

CARLA CARMICHAEL To see if I understand right Recipe for paint IF you CAN NOT find folk art glas and tile medium Dime size drop of paint Dime size drop of multi purpose sealer Dime size drop modge podge Dime size drop of matte Varnish Dime size drop of water Mix well and paint... IS that right???
Your recipe is right...except add more water to thin to a watercolor type consistency. Sometimes it will seem that barely any paint is there, but as you add layers and they dry in between, you will see your different layers coming through. Applying thin layers is the key. Thanks for the question. :)
Hello I love your videos! I have a question, do you use all 3 sealers mixed for one layer of paint? Or do you alternate sealers each layer? Thank you in advance :-)

Thank you so much for these videos!! I seen your other video on mixing the paint with the folkart glass and tile medium and I went everywhere looking for it yesterday at Joanns I was told it was being discontinued ... now after seeing this video I can go into a store and not leave empty handed :).. I do have one question though .. is the Dura Clear to be mixed in the paint as well or just after the doll has been painted?
lisa reynolds Hi...thank YOU for watching and commenting. I really hope my info helped you. I wanted to let you know that I have purchased the Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium over the Internet at factorydirectcraft.com/ and at www.officesupply.com. Like you, I have had a hard time finding it locally at Joann's, but it is still showing it available from them online at www.joann.com. Here's more details of how exactly I mix these products...both if Folk Art Glass and Tile is available...and if it's not... Hope this helps. Carla :) NOTE: Also, since this earlier video, I have found an AWESOME ultra-matte varnish that I finish my dolls with...giving them a perfectly matted look on the finished product. I found this at Hobby Lobby...it comes in an 8-ounce tub, I believe...costs in my area (Alabama) $9.99...and that tub will complete 4-5 dolls I found. It is in the craft paint section of Hobby Lobby...and is called Americana Ultra-Matte Varnish. It is over in the Americana chalk paint section...but if you read the label...it says can be used with any acrylic paint as well. I bought it, because I wanted an ultra-matte finish on my dolls...no shine at all...and this stuff worked outstandingly. I've recommended it to a couple other people here on TH-cam, and they've purchased it and tried it...and love it as well. Just wanted to pass this little "newly-discovered" treasure on to you too! My preferred fixative is Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium and when I have that, I will use for example a dime-sized drop of paint...and the same sized drop of glass and tile medium...and the same sized drop of multi-purpose sealer...mixed well together...then thinned with distilled water to a very thin and watery consistency. Yes I did see it online but I did not want to wait on an order to come in I’m a little anxious to try this method so just to make sure again I understand so that I won’t mess up my adorable little Huti B baby I will need to use all three of the product in my paint at the same time the (*mod podge, *matte Varnish and the multipurpose sealer.
lisa reynolds Yep...exactly...mod podge, matte varnish, multipurpose sealer and paint...(mix dime-sized amounts of each)...and then thin with water to very thin...water color consistancy. Let each coat dry thoroughly before starting the next...but since you are applying such thin coats...usually by the time you finish the head and all 4 limbs, you can start the next coat on the first piece again, and continue on building up layers of flesh, mottling and blushing as you go. I hope you'll post a link of your baby when you get him/her finished...I would love to see your work! Carla
Hello..I'm about to purchase acylics from Walmart....can you add any one of the mediums and water to help thin the paints out..?
so the matt varnish goes on at the very end after your done painting and then comes the gloss? And is there anything i need to apply on the doll before starting?
sorry if u already answered this question but do i mix the matte varnish with the paint ?

Dime size drop of paint
Dime size drop of multi purpose sealer
Dime size drop modge podge
Dime size drop of matte Varnish
Dime size drop of water
Mix well and paint...
Thank you in advance :-)
tiny monsters Hi...thanks for your question. Sorry I didn't see your message sooner. Here's an explanation I wrote earlier to another person...I think it will give the more detailed explanation you wanted. (And I don't alternate sealers for each layer.) My preferred fixative is Folk Art Glass and Tile Medium and when I have that, I will use for
example a dime-sized drop of paint...and the same sized drop of glass
and tile medium...and the same sized drop of multi-purpose
sealer...mixed well together...then thinned with distilled water to a
very thin and watery consistency. But when Folk Art Glass and Tile
Medium is not available (like when I've run out or new product hasn't
arrived yet) I use some of these products instead...for example, in that
case, I would use a dime-sized drop of paint...then a dime-sized drop
of Mod Podge...then a dime-sized drop of Matte Varnish...then a
dime-sized drop of multi-purpose sealer...and again mixed well together
...then thinned with distilled water to a very thin and watery
consistency. After painting all of the coats of paint I want to do on
my doll, I would finish with 1...if not 2...coats of the Dura Clear
Ultra Matte Varnish to give the doll a very nice matte finish. Then
finally, I would use the Folk Art's Artist's Varnish Gloss to gloss the
nails (both toes and fingers), lips, inside of nose (if shaded), ears
folds, and inner and outer corners of the eye. And no, I've not seen
the Craft Smart or DecoArt paints myself. I hope this helps settle any
confusion. Hugs, Carla
Where is the light ,,,can’t even see !
Carla :)
NOTE: Also, since this earlier video, I have found an AWESOME ultra-matte varnish that I finish my dolls with...giving them a perfectly matted look on the finished product.

Carla
Ok Thank You!! :)
Oh and Are you on Facebook please ?
tiny monsters No...sorry...I'm not. :)
