    Savotta is a great company. I just bought the Jääkäri S model today. i got my first savotta rucksack/backpack from my dad in the 90s. And it was a model he bought in the 50s so they've always made them to last long enough to pass them to your kids if needed. Only thing i miss in todays Savotta backpacks and rucksacks is the 80/90s logo. That was really iconic for me as a kid. I used to drool looking at outdoor shops brochures as a kid and i always thought the Savotta logo was the coolest and their rucksack were dope af. They were also really really expensive so my parents didn't have the money to buy a bigger rucksack for me. But the old 50s model was good enough but not large enough for a week long trip to the woods

    For carrying slightly heavier loads with Jääkäri S, adding Varusteleka's Särmä TST sling pads (they fit 100% perfectly) and Savotta MPP foam mat (or something similar) can be recommended.

    Great review...my edc for a few years now. I have side pouches attached as well as sling pads. Hasn't failed me as my edc or a 2 to 3 day minimal bushcraft trip. This bag can be whatever you want it to be.

      100% agree. This pack is that blank canvas backpack. Keep it simple or make it into the bag you need it to be. I think I'm going to pick up the side pouches for the Jääkäri M. Thanks for watching Garry 😊

    The Savotta Jääkäri is not just one backpack among others, but belongs to an all-encompassing carrying system, a product family that can be modified in many different ways according to the need for use.

    That's quite a tidy pack. Far more advanced than this old Ranger's used to. I still use the same old A.L.I.C.E. Medium pack on the frame. Yup, I'm officially old.😲

    I just purchased a Savotta jääkäri s from Ray Mears Woodlore online store I must have gotten the last one in stock at the time. In the olive green. Purchased the happy patch too which is a must have accessory.
    When I received the pack the next day after ordering I was pleased to see it wasn't as big as was expecting as I thought it might look too big for a day sack and for general use. The next thing I noticed was the nice quality of the fabric. Then after checking it out I was thinking it doesn't have enough small pockets that I'm used too on my old pack. It only has the one zipper pocket which although it's out the way for good security it's in a funny place on top of the flap but underneath so if you put too much in when the pack is not full it just kind of sags down. Also the extension part of the pack I thought was a bit strange too as it makes the pack really tall but is only of use if you plan on filling the pack right up. The piece of plastic which was an unexpected find also feels like it could crack or snap after a while. Its used to stiffen the top hem and to help roll the pack down. I want to buy the foam mat for the back pocket but sometimes the Savotta stuff isn't easy to purchase all from one place plus it's expensive for what it is. So I purchased some extra pouches so I had my pockets I was missing so much. I ordered 2 small mini side pouches and 1 small horizontal pouch. Put one small pouch either side and the horizontal pouch on the front at the bottom of the pack. I was at first worried about the molle not being secure enough to hold the pockets on as obviously I don't want to lose my things. Never have used this system before but to my surprise the Savotta molle works really well especially with the stiff tabs on the molle to help thread it through. It's extremely unlikely to come undo or the pouches to be pulled off. For the price the finish and quality of the pouches are good but would have liked it better if they were lined and the same for the inside of the backpack because they look untidy seeing all the seems.
    The fit of the pack feels very comfortable when I put it on it just sits nicely on my shoulders and back.
    The reason I got the small pouches is because I've seen people putting the bigger sized pouches on and they look huge on the jakaari s and there's tons of room in the pack itself so just got mini pouches for my bits and bobs.
    I wish I could get 2 of the Savotta small sized molle mpp pouches in olive but they're impossible to find in the UK now as I believe they're a discontinued product.
    It's an interesting pack and I think there's nothing else like it available although it's not going to be perfect for everyone it seems like it will work.
    You also can get molle pouches from other brands to try out which are generally cheaper to buy so lots of options to add some extra pockets to the pack.
    Overall though with the price of the backpack itself and the extra pockets and foam matt it works out just over £200.

    great bag, but one real downside is the lack of any padding, channelling, or airflow on the back. can use it for a couple night out hiking or as a good day pack for a lot of camera equipmen, but im tired of having sweat dripping down into my backside nether region in 19 degree celcius weather. back to blackdiamond and the ul hiking community rather than the wanna be stormtroopers. he good for getting groceries on my moto bike though. straps are super uncomfortable past 15lbs, but can be overcome with pads or diy

    Great video!!!
    I've got this pack for about 5 years and I love it! At first I was disappointed at a few points but with a few minor changes it's become my favourite pack! The "problems" are just two:
    1) The zippers on both of my Savotta Jakaari S packs suck. No matter what I did those zippers were getting stuck. In the end I don't use those and removed the zipper pulls. I wanted a zipper-free pack in the first place after all.
    2) Only one compression strap per side sucks, I ended up removing them. Don't miss them at all.
    Other stuff:
    3) Got a chest strap (it's from Sarma, I got the packs and extras from Varusteleka, great guys!), it works great. BTW I also got the Sarma shoulder padding but I don't care about it - nothing wrong with those but I prefer the pack without any padding.
    4) Got 2 molle military canteen pouches, 2 Wisport 9 litre molle side pockets and a few compression straps to attach to all that molle. This gives tons of different variations!
    5) I use a piece of a sleeping pad in the water pouch compartmen for back padding. Or a tarp in a drybag. Or a hoodie. Again, tons of options.
    AND THE PACK IS PERFECT! When fitted with the 2 side pockets, sleeping bag attached to the bottom, rolled sleeping pad attached to the lid and a small hatchet attached to the molle on the front - there is still so much space left. I can live for days and days from that pack!!!
    For summer I add just one or two of the canteen pouches. Or I remove all of the add-ons and just enjoy a small pack with a blanket underneath. YEEHAW!!!
    PS: I wish there was a full molle panel on the bottom, not just the four loops. The full panel would be stronger. Ripping one of the loops would basically mean losing the ability to attach stuff using the added compression straps. But with how strong the pack is I'm not afraid of that. And there are the pack's compression straps that could be used.

    • @MoorlanderEDC
      @MoorlanderEDC  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Michal, I think you've got some valib points here buddy. The simplicity of the pack is the strongest positive for it. It's really at a point where you can add to this to make it the pack you need. I'd definitely love an additional compression strap and I think a sternum strap as standard would be a winner. The Varusteleka TSA CP15 is a similar pack, however with the options to upgrade the straps, it would make perfect sense for Savotta to do the same

    Was thinking about buying this, been looking for a bag for awhile. I thought this one looked really good, plus made in Finland and Lithuania or something like that, I read. Good stuff. I try to buy local, but im from Sweden. Also got Swedish knife and axe 😅 But my bit bigger bag is british - Snugpak. Bit worries about those shoulder straps or whatever they are called tho, they look very thin and not cushioned at all.

      @MoorlanderEDC  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, thanks for watching. I love the amazing friends ship the Swedes and Finnish have 😂 brothers and sisters separated by a border. Yes, this is definitely an awesome pack. The strap definitely don't have any cushioning. Another suggestion might be the Varusteleka TST CP15. They're also made by Savotta, plus there's an option with padded straps. All my best 🤜🤛

    • @LordOfSweden
      @LordOfSweden ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MoorlanderEDC Haha well, all the northern countries rip on eachother but we secretely love eachother (don't tell the danes). 🤣
      In a way Sweden has a special relantionship with Finland because 5% or 400.000 of the finnish population are Swedes, who Speak Swedish, funnily enough with an accent that of a finnish person who tries to speak Swedish 😅 It's very odd. But it's the Swedish populations who moves to the coast of Finland and settled there a long time ago.
      So they belong to Finland nationality wise, but speak Swedish. "Finland-Swedes".
      For example if you have heard of the knifebrand Enzo (Brisa) is from this part of Finland. Jakobstad (Jacobcity).
      But actually languages and etnicity-wise, Scandinavians are the most alike. Swedes, Danes, Icelandic and Norwegian. Swedes and Norwegians are the most alike, cause we have lived seperated on this half Island while danes have gotten a lot of influence from downwards Europe and Iceland brought home a lot of Irish women 🤣 So like 30% or something of the people there have some kind of Irish acnestry in the female- line because of all the women they stole 😅
      The finnish are another etnicity (they have asian admixture many of them, which you can see on how they look many of them) and they speak another language family entirely, the finnu-ugric language (same as Estonia) while the rest of the Nordic speak Scandinavian from old norse.
      The more you know right 😄
      Anyway 😂 Thanks for the tip, I will look into that bag, if you have some more bag tips for a small bag I gladly take em, I cannot seem to find any good ones. This one Savotta was the best iv'e found so far.

      @MoorlanderEDC  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey buddy. I'd say comparing the two the Jaakari is a bit better for me for everyday use. The extra capcity really helps. They're both tough bags. Savotta use 1000d Cordura where as Helikon use 500d Cordura. The Helikon bag is definitely lighter, however the Savotta is like a tank. The straps on the Savotta are very simple and not for everybody as they have zero padding, where as the Helikon Bergen straps are definitely easier on the shoulder. They're both great packs. I hope that helps

    • @MoorlanderEDC
      @MoorlanderEDC  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Victor, the coldest I've been is - 6c and they were fine. My guess is as its designed by the Finnish for their winters the buckles/plastics will have been something they have considered. Everything uses the attached webbing so if needs be yiu could always cut off the buckles and use steel G Hooks. I think they'd work perfect. I'll keep an eye on this comment to see what everybody else thinks. All my best buddy

      I have the L version in the lineup (Jääkäri L), they have the same buckles and I was out camping in -20 to -26*C (-4 to -15* F) freezing cold, even for me… but still the backpack did an amazing job enduring that cold, nothing broke… that’s the Finnish quality for you there👍🏾

    I don't think I would like this for EDC, just too 'simplistic'.
    Not enough compartments to store my things in a ... my ... logical way ^^ (a solution is adding other external pouches and so more and more money to spend)
    But I would like very well other models from Savotta for bushcraft (the L model probably the best for me, with some external pouches), there are just tanks :)
