    I find books I already know in my target language and copy them by hand. I feel like I learn and become more comfortable using the language when I simply copy!

    My two tips:
    1. As someone else has suggested, graphic novels/comic books can be really handy. I don't read them in English, but they definitely helped with Italian. I have a real soft spot for Dylan Dog.
    2. When you don't know a word and you decide to look it up, do not look up its translation into your native language. Rather, use a target language dictionary (like Treccani, in Italian). One benefit is that it doesn't disrupt your flow in your target language, and it helps you maintain the mental framework in which the target language is its own thing, not just another version of your native language. You will also, hopefully, come to understand the word's unique shades of meaning, which is sometimes not obviously translateable in a dictionary format. Another benefit is that you will be exposed to useful synonyms, as well as seeing good examples of how it is used.

    Now i know why language learning is easier for little kids. They think that content at their language level is interesting and compelling. If i could get that in a graded reader at my level, it wouldn't be so hard to keep going.
    (One thing that i think is not recognized in videos like this is that, by the time children get to fourth or sixth grade, they are extremely good at their language relative to a language learner. Books at their level are at like a C1 to me.)

    I’ve been studying Portuguese for 9.5 years now and I’ve visited Brasil 18 times but I still can’t read or converse and I have to translate everything into English to understand. It’s like English words have meanings, images and ideas connected to them but Portuguese words have English words connected to them and they need to be translated. I have been practicing every day with my girlfriend who only speaks Portuguese and we’ve been practicing for 6.5 years now but I still can’t understand her. I can’t read anything yet because of having to translate everything. It prevents me from using context too

      Wow man, your story is interesting, but like you said the key is relate things (images,sounds,even feelings and emotions),is easy write and listening but sometimes I don’t know all the vocabulary and make me mad but I remember that I’m not perfect and that’s all but maybe you need to find a hobbie in Portuguese, well I hope you understand my terrible English 😅hehe but some advices can improve our lives, good luck mate.

    Have you ever read Jhumpa Lahiri, specifically "In Other Words"? She writes in English and Italian, and this particular book explores her own journey learning Italian. I read the English portion, though I'm not quite ready for the Italian portion. Just wondering how you feel about her writing.

    thank you again for this video , a real pleasure even though I’m not currently learning Italian, but I hope one day. If it’s not too intrusive, How long have you been learning Italian? I love the ways you speak Italian really soft and looks like close to a native italian speaker. bravo 👏

    • @SheaJordan
      @SheaJordan  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! I speak softly mainly because I’m shy when I talk in Italian 😂😂 but I’ve never done a video where I spoke both English and Italian in the same video so it’s funny to see how much my voice changes haha. I started teaching myself about 4 years ago but really made huge progress after moving to Italy about 2 years ago. That helped my pronunciation and accent a lot.

I love the way people keep talking and changing languages.i can understand that liviing in your target country can help you so much due to for the immersion continue and also when the Native only knows their mother tongue you have to deal with it. keep it up , I love it 😊

    When you first went to Italy, did you ask people if they speak English?
    Think I might do this at first, then as time goes on start speaking more Italian.

    • @SheaJordan
      @SheaJordan  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Usually I tried to just speak in Italian. Only if there was something that was a bit difficult, like when I went to set up my phone and get a SIM card, I asked if they spoke English because I knew that would probably require vocab I didn't know yet. But usually in a store or restaurant I always tried to speak Italian, and Italians are usually very nice and encouraging!
