    Hi Jonni - happy to ( maybe ) be able to help you as you've helped me. You have a few choices to keep focus as you work. I don't know your set up so I'll do my best.
    You can adjust your focal length (shoot wide angle which helps everything be in focus because there is a wider field of view) or you can adjust your aperture to a higher number/smaller diameter (which brings more of what you are looking at into focus) or you can set your focus by placing whatever you are working on in frame of the camera, letting the autofocus achieve focus and then put your lens into manual (can be done either on the barrel of the lens itself or in the camera menu ). If you are going to shoot in manual focus, it helps to mark your position in some way - with tape or use landmarks on your desk to orient a rough idea of where being in frame is - that way you know you are in focus if you have nailed your mark. Some planning is involved in that if you need closeups you will have to either edit those manually adjusted clips in or stop shooting, adjust your focus, restart shooting.
    One other option is to change the way your camera focusses by choosing a wider range of view that the autofocus system uses to achieve focus. There are usually choices from pin point focus to wide (terminology changes from brand to brand but it will be obvious what each is).
    Adjusting the angle of the camera when shooting can help with focus as well. If that is all you can do based upon your equipment, then shooting from a parallel position to your work surface is ideal - shoot from directly overhead and you''ll minimize any focus movement. If you want to shoot from the side and at a down ward angle you will need to have a smaller aperture for example.
    Lastly, even though it is easier for viewers to see some things on a white background, having more contrast in frame allows the camera to have an easier time focussing and it will spend less time hunting for that focus. Combining a high contrast background and a small aperture should go a long way to toning down the focus hunt.
    I hope that wasn't too confusing - if I can help out more just let me know. Although we seem to be kindred spirits when it comes to learning so I imagine you'll be an expert in this soon and won't need any help :)

      Thanks Michelle. for your very helpful comment. I'll hunt for my camera's manual and see if I can do some of the things you suggest. I'm using a Canon EOS M50. Some of my videos come out with the focus just fine, and others, like this one, are blurry for much of the shoot. That probably means that I'm accidentally clicking the wrong button or changing the settings, but I don't know which ones. I can't start my entire project over when the video doesn't work, but I hate putting up bad video. 🥺

    • @MichelleLevasseur

      @@UltimatePaperMache You are welcome. I don't have that particular camera so I'll do a bit of research on that one as well. Feel free to email me about it at any time :) I know exactly what you mean about putting up bad video - I hate doing that as well! The pitfalls of being a one woman show means you have to accept less than perfect sometimes :)

      @@MichelleLevasseur Hi Michelle. You've already been so helpful. Please don't take up too much of your time on my silly problem. I'll figure it out eventually... You have a beautiful YT channel, by the way. I love your videos. 😀

    • @MichelleLevasseur
      @MichelleLevasseur 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UltimatePaperMache No trouble - as I haven't had a chance to do any research on that model yet :) I do shoot Canon for stills so I am familiar with the line. At the time of writing the first comment I was a new subscriber so I hadn't watched many of your videos. I have now and you are right, most of the time the camera behaves itself. The only time I've noticed a focussing issue is when you shoot, as I mentioned before, at a downward and titled angle. For those shots I recommend either going manual focus or if you have to use auto focus then make your aperture at least f8. That way your focal plane will hold both what it is your wanting to focus on and any hand, tool etc that crosses between the camera and your product. For example, when stirring the pot of flour mixture when you experimented with cooking the flour - your hand gives the camera something besides the pot to focus on. With a higher aperture number, the distance between your hand and the pot 'disappears' and the camera won't hunt for the focus. Without dropping in on ya to scope out your set up, I can't really be of more help. I'm in Canada so dropping in isn't an option lol! Although, I could spend hours looking at your sculptures so it would be worth the trip! Thanks for the nice words about my wee channel - made my day :)

      @@MichelleLevasseur Thank you so much, Michelle. I'm currently trying to figure out how to use Facebook ads to get more traffic to my pattern pages, and Facebook confuses me even more than cameras do! But as soon as I get a chance I'll play with the aperture setting. I really appreciate all your help. 😀

  • @SylvrSharp

    I love your tutorials and am using your recipe but have a quick question for you. Do you have to prep the cardboard parts of the armature somehow before coating it with the paper clay? My cardboard warps while it's drying because it's sucking up the moisture from the clay (which appears to have the same consistency as yours). Do I need to put a layer of masking tape over the entire cardboard surface?

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't often use paper mache clay directly on cardboard, because most of my sculptures are built up with crumpled paper or foil to get the rounded shapes. But I do make a lot of masks with cardboard, and you can get a real problem with warping if the pieces are too flat and too big. Covering the cardboard with masking tape will help, but for really big flat pieces, like those needed for making doll houses, might still warp.

    Do you use a specific glue gun or could I use a different style glue ? I bought one glue gun that quit on me after a few tries so not sure all glue guns are created equal?🤔 thanks Clare

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought my glue gun at the local hardware store because it was the only one they had. There may be differences in brands, but I don't know what they are. It's a simple little tool, so it should keep working for years.

    Do you have a way to clean up paper mache if it gets spilled? My mother won't let me try any of these because she thinks I will make a mess.

    • @UltimatePaperMache
      @UltimatePaperMache  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean paper mache paste made with flour and water? Don't use it over a carpet or nice wood floor. A kitchen is a great place to do paper mache. If any gets on the counter or floor, just wipe it up with a damp sponge. If you leave it long enough for it to get dry, soak it for a few minutes and then wipe it off.

    I'm used to making masks with fabric and foam, and we don't usually use paper or cardboard in them because if we sweat, black most could form and it impacts your lungs alot 😅 never experienced it personally but heard about it
    When you used cardboard for the wings and stuff, I was just like "noOO- mold :'0" and then realised... No one gonna sweat on that XD
