I found you a few years back, had only my in laws backyard to create a huge Day of the Dead Catarina mask, then moved twice after, wishing I had more space to create with your amazing paper mache techniques. My husband finally got orders to move to Italy and all I can think about was getting a home in Italy with enough space and light to get lost in creating. I went from watching only lame make up videos to finding you, then I’ve only wanted to watch anything and everything art related, art history included. I became a mother at a young age and a decade later I rediscovered my love and passion for creating, all because of the knowledge you’ve generously shared. After much time, sweat, tears and stress, my family and I are finally in Italy. We literally had our final walkthrough today before signing our lease on Monday. And as I said, all I can think of is how I finally, finally get to be in a space where I can comfortably use my hands, make a mess, and make things that bring me joy..all because of you, Darlin’. 💖 I tear up while typing this because I’m so gosh darn happy!! My daughter gave me the greatest idea to make huge mushroom toad stools in what will soon be our lovely garden, with your recipe☺️💖. I’m sorry this is so long 😅but I truly thank you to the bottom of my heart ❤️ After watching you for the first time years ago, I never bought make up again, instead I invested in all the art materials I can get my hands on and hoarded many objects I plan on reusing for future projects. I look forward to sharing them with you as soon as we’re settled in. Thank you again Jonni. You’ve literally changed my life and made this stay at home mother absolutely fulfilled with art and discovery 🥰🥰🥰 Cheers to you and your future art endeavors ✨✨✨✨and a million times thank you Jonnie. This is facinating. If this was taught to me in high school instead of newspapers dipped in paste (no one told us about sanding so we got all kinds of seams showing, and no one told us to make a pattern, it was free form blobs), I'd have had a whole zoo of creatures made by now. I plan to do my first one sometime this summer. Looks like fun, I appreciate your video showing how to do this.
Thanks, Zina. The dark base is definitely getting the most votes! I'll try to do that today - I really look forward to seeing how it looks when the base is darker. 😀

My class is preparing for a Cinderella act and my job is to make a pumpkin, recently I’ve stumbled across your channel and now I’m addicted to your paper mache(s)
Thanks Joni. I haven't watched you in a long time because I lost my workspace and couldn't make the sculptures I used to make. Now, I am selling art in a gallery in Olympia so I have an outlet. For this holiday season I made some little cardstock flying bird ornaments that got me back into creating sculpture. I only have my kitchen table and very little storage so I need to work small. I have started trying to make some spirit dolls and haven't gotten very far yet with that. But I am interested in doing more sculpture and was looking for examples of how to make really small things and that was when I found you again. Loved the video, am inspired and would be happy to hear about any other videos you might know about for tiny things. I have started my mouse and will add paper mache tonight. Can't wait to see how it turns out.
OH that's cute. Yeah, the mouse has a shiny color so I think that painting the bun foot with a dark color, maybe walnut color or dark umber mixed with a bit of brown, will be beautiful. I'm gonna make one for my little sister because she loves small animals.
Great idea!! She'll love it. I hope you'll post the mouse on the Daily Sculptors page on my site, too - we'd all love to see how it turns out. www.ultimatepapermache.com/daily-sculptors-group-page
So so cute. Love it. So interesting about your daughter being into arts. You must've inspired her a lot. I love when parents show children creativity, it really opens a beautiful channel for creation of all sorts of beauty around us later on and also helps to self soothe whenever we are going through tougher times. ❤
That's so true - my own parents were very creative, too, so it must run in the family. And I agree that it's great therapy - when the world seems to be going crazy, we can find refuge by focusing on our own creative projects. 😄
I think the chair base foot works great for the mouse !! The mouse is so cute !!! I think a bit darker color on the base would be great. Maybe a stain. Very nice !!!. Love this project !!! Well done 😃

Thanks for the nice video and project mouse. He looks a little like the mice I used to make out of steel. You always do a nice job teaching and always willing to learn. For the wood part, just spray it with some clear and it will darken a little. Good to see you!!!!!! 😀😀😀😀😀😀😍😍😍😍😍😍
I JUST found your channel and I am in love. Wow, wow, wow! I heard you live Minnesota also and I got so very excited because I live in Minnesota with my husband and our baby daughter. I want to get into paper mache so I’m just starting my bingeing all your videos 😍 thank you for the amazing content and hope you are doing well!
This is awesome. I will be making a paper mache replica of my hamster. She has recently past away, so I will be making one in her honor. Very cool video!
I was wondering if you'd do a full video of making a realistic rat out of Apoxie Sculpt. This mouse is cute but I really like the way you did the Apoxie Sculpt rabbit because it's so realistic and looks to be life sized.
how does the paper mache clay hold up? ive been interetsed in using it for a costume mask because just Cardboard would mold, does the clay risk that too?
Any form of paper mache can encourage mold if you don't let it dry as fast as possible, and then seal it so it can't soak up moisture from the air. I haven't had any problem with mold on my sculptures, but they never get wet. I must say, though, that a mask made entirely of paper mache clay is really uncomfortable to wear. It dries as hard as a rock, so it's almost impossible to get the inside smooth enough. I suggest putting it over paper strips and paste or a cardboard base, so the mask will be smooth on the inside.
Do you use a spray sealer on your finished items? I live in Florida and I've found that some things don't keep if not sealed some way. What products would you recommend? Thank you. 🙂
Yes, you'll need to seal it to keep it from absorbing moisture from the air. An spray sealer will work just fine. I normally use an acrylic varnish, but it isn't very humid where I live.
Paper mache doesn't have to be baked. It will dry just as hard if you let it air dry. In fact, putting it in front of a fan may make it dry even faster than an oven would. Have fun! 😊
That's a great idea. The wood thingy even has a "lid" shape on it. I don't know if I have time for it, but it would look really nice. Thanks for the idea! 🐭😄
Probably. I've used Activa PaperClay and DAS clay in the past, and they worked pretty well. But I don't use commercial products very often, so I'm really not very familiar with them.
It is adorable! I love your videos, you're so interesting and calming to listen to! Anyway thank you so much for sharing your beautiful work, it inspires me to try making things 🤗
Hi Julie. It sounds like you were adding just paper mache clay without an armature, but it works best as a very thin layer over a strong armature, the way you would use traditional paper strips and paste.
