    Fun to see how to use this old reel. Just picked up a box of old reel bits and parts and one of these was in there, so now I know a lot more about using it! Thanks!

    I rescued a bunch of Penn Delmar 285's bought off e-bay. Each reel was taken completely apart, cleaned, polished, fixed (if need be), greased with Quicksilver 2-4-C marine grease, upgraded the drag washers to carbon fiber HT-100 drag washers and ground flat stainless steel drag washers from Smooth Drag. The drag washers were greased with Cal's Universal Reel and Drag grease for a nice smooth drag. All of the screws were greased, all the metal parts were greased, the spools have grease on them (not an ungreased spot on them for corrosion protection). 2 of them (to compliment their heat treated steel gears and stainless steel pinion gear) were treated to stainless steel gear sleeves, stainless steel 🐕's (hand fitted) and custom drag stacks (5 carbon fiber washers and 5 s.s. washers) from Ultimate Upgrades by Bryan Young and aluminum spools. The modified reels produce 16 lbs of drag. The drag is smooth and not jerky. Jerky drags tend to break things.
    The reels capacity are completely full with 300 yds of 30 lb dacron with a 50 yd topshot of 30 lb mono or 400 yds of 20 lb dacron and 50 yds of 20 lb mono.
    Some of the reels that I got off of e bay were used for parts. I tossed most of the 3 piece spools except for the 29M-60 stainless steel spools. I have a bunch of spare parts cleaned and catalogued.
    I'd like to see you fish a Penn Delmar 285 from the beach. Tight lines.

    Recently purchased a bakelite Penn No. 85 Sea Boy, took it apart and completely cleaned, lubricated the entire thing ,and gosh, it free spools better than any of the other penns I own. I would love to take it out a fish with it some day.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They are awesome reels actually quite lite too, nice robust gears and like you say a great freespool! They cast great with bait on the beach, super on piers and perfect for boats and they last forever! I am due to do a video with one soon! Enjoy the reel use it they are awesome! Thanks as always! Fish Your Way - Jerry

      @@FishYourWay That is wonderful to hear, all your videos are awesome but seeing one featuring the same reels I own is even more special. I just ordered a bakelite 77 Sea Hawk with cream handles to add to the collection, because of your video on "the lost art of surf casting" it will look wonderful cleaned up next to the 85 Seaboy. Say, do you have any experience with the Peer 109 Levelwind? I have one as well, and it due to it's small size, It seems like it'd be a pleasure to use.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks again! The 109 is a pretty neat reel it is direct drive, I would use the peerless No. 9 or a penn no.10 instead of the abu garcia ambassadeurs but the left hand model is rare. i think the are better for the sea then the abus but all great reels! The small size of the no.9 makes it nice and light, that has a freespool with no handle spins so you can get light lures out the no 109 you mention is better for bait but I prefer to not use a levelwind for bait fishing and dont mind the crankside. Good stuff as always and thanks a million!

    Great video and the one about the Penn 77 ! You are using them with left hand wind . Are they set for a "leftie" or do you have to change anything in the reel ? I am going to have a go a a refurb on a couple of Penn's and will have a go with them in the UK . I am really enjoying the videos keep them coming ! Thanks

    I was out fishing with a friend some years back and he landed a shark just limit size; it was the best tasting fish I've had. Do you keep sharks for eating? if you do what size.

      Thats neat! I do keep these time to time no limits on them. they are great, you just need to clean them right away. I may keep one before I leave but you are right they are delicious!!! Thanks Lucio!

    yah know...it looks like the reel is mounted backwards ??? isn't the free-spool lever usually on the right ??

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I prefer to crank with my left hand and hold the rod with my right. With no anti-reverse you can pick which side you prefer! Another cool feature!!!

  • @maithao2119
    @maithao2119 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you switch the handle to the left?

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Do you know if braid or mono works better on older Penn baitcasters like this? I have a Penn no.85

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thats a good question, if your not sure and not too big a fan of braid go with the mono. Most people use mono with them I just prefer braid, but its really a matter of preference so if you like braid give it a go

    Pregunta desde Bs As. Al enrrollar el Nylon, si no lo va devanando con el dedo. No se enrrolla parejo en el carretel verdad?

      FishJonesBeach por que en el vídeo en este y en el que utiliza el penn Numero 77. Enrrolla el Nylon y No lo va devanando. Que tipo de Nylon utiliza? Por cierto, soy de Bs As ARGENTINA.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      El gran juego de Berkley es una buena línea. Es nylon y funciona bien. 20 libras es suficiente. Me gusta utilizar la línea de trenza, aunque como se ve aquí

      El Nylon es marca Berkley verdad?

  • @FishingHam

    Jerry, Does the reel have a level wind system? I didn't see you use your thumb to lay the line on the spool.

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is no levelwind on it, you just have to keep an eye laying line on, you can get away with it sometimes without thumbing the line on

  • @rmp608
    @rmp608 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Im a lefty..looks simple to use gonna get one on ebay..what line are you using ?? Thanks

    • @FishYourWay
      @FishYourWay  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yea I do both but prefer left so i may be using this a bit more this year, I like that I can pick a side that works best for me. have another one this style but diffrent for an upcoming video. That is 50lb on top and 30 below with 20lb to the spool. I like the tyhinner braid because I can get a extra hundred yards just in case it takes a while to turn a shark. Mono or dacron is standard a little thicker but most people use 20lb mono you may be able to get 300yds or so i think its stated 27lb/200yds or something standard but thats yestur years line

    Great video Jerry!!!! That reel sure is Tough :) I have broke so many Reels due to the conditions I fish in my last reel that broke was during Steelhead season Reel got wet from it Snowing and the little bit of water on it froze and expanded which snapped my anti-reverse right off I guess some reels just aren't made for the crazy extreme Anglers like us lol :)
