This year has marked a lot of firsts for us on TestDrive, and one of the biggest is this 2019 Volvo S90 T8 Inscription. This loaded mid-size long wheelbase luxury sedan has a lot of tech, features, options, and kit to go over, so we went all out to produce the most comprehensive episode of TestDrive we've ever published. Our Spotlight on the 2019 Volvo S90 is the new benchmark for TestDrive both in terms of quality, content, and testing methods.
The first act of our video goes over the exterior features of this AWD luxury vehicle, such as the IntelliSafe active and passive safety features, such as lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, active cruise control, cross traffic alert, animal detection, collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, and much more. We go over the vehicle's parking sensors, self-parallel parking system, front adaptive LED headlights including the Thor's Hammer style DRLs.
We also show how the PHEV charging system works, including where we've used it and information about our electric driving range and conditions during our week. We feature the keyless entry system, alarm, power opening trunk, LED tail lights, and window controls.
Inside the car we talk about the open pore wood trim finish, leather wrapped dashboard and door cards, multiple information displays such as the colour Head Up Display, cluster computer, and portrait mode infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and one of the best 360º camera systems we've used to date. This car is equipped with the optional Bowers & Wilkins audio system.
We also sit in the back seating area of this long wheelbase mid-size luxury sedan to talk about the extra 4.7 inches of legroom afforded to the rear passengers. Features such as quad zone automatic climate control, power window sun shades, power headrests, heated rear seats, optional massaging front seats, and the passenger controls for the executive seat. Interior ambient lighting and other features of the interior are also discussed.
On our road test segment we take the Volvo S90 on our new TestDrive Circuit, a 100km exact loop around our Québec studio where we'll test every new vehicle we feature on TestDrive moving forward. This 100km loop will give us a comparable fuel economy number on top of the weekly 'real world' number we usually talk about. During our road test we also go over our experience with the S90's 4-C active suspension system, and rear self-levelling component, and how this car handles and rides in comparison to other luxury sedans we've driven this year.
We wrap up our extensive coverage of the 2019 Volvo S90 Inscription with our likes and dislikes about this vehicle, and our strategy for episodes like this one moving forward. We've put a lot more time into this episode to see what our capabilities can be with more time devoted to filming and editing each episode, along with spending more screen time talking about the features and what we find. It did grow on me over the week, I think the only thing I'd have liked to see would be the amber turn signals like they use in Europe, I prefer them aesthetically as well as from a functional perspective.

I really like this long format for your test drive videos, especially for your more interesting cars. I completely understand the level of work that goes into something this extensive, and so I can understand why you wouldn’t be able to do this all the time. But for something like this car, for me it’s nothing but good.

The buttons on the wheel are easy to use. On the right you have media, on the left you have things like cruisecontrol
Once you figure it out it makes sense, just a bit of a learning curve is all.

The back of it definitely grew on us by the end of the week. It stands out. We spotted another S90 the other day from a distance just from the unique rear design of the lights.

Great review, having the S90 D5 I can only confirm that the car is something else than the german trio and a very nice alternative and you guys do not imagine how many looks and positive reactions the car gets while cruising along through the city or at the gas station.
And regarding the Chinese build quality I always repeat: It's made in China but it's made by Sweden and that is a huge difference.

I always notice these on the road when I see them, we spend a week with the XC90 T8 Inscription and published that episode this past Monady, the XC90 is still a seriously nice crossover, but it didn't feel as special as driving this S90. I'd take this any day!
Great review, love that it's a little longer than normal. Normally you do show off the cars acceleration when you do a testdrive, I would have loved to see that with vehicle. :-)
We would have liked to also, but we wanted to keep it as 'eco' as possible! We did some performance-oriented driving with last week's Volvo XC60 T8, same engine setup so we show what that 400 hp engine can really do.
So cute of those who repeatedly talk about how made in China would contribute negatively to Volvo's build quality. Statistically, XC90 made in Gothenburg, Sweden and S90 made in Daqing, China have consistent quality performance, and XC60 made in Chengdu, China has above average numbers. If you have used iPhone assembled in Chongqing, China and driven Tesla made in Shanghai, China, you realize the issue is not with whether the product is made in China, but how much do the brand themselves care about the quality control process. For a lot of people, they run into cheap, low-quality Chinese product daily and produced a bias against Chinese product, yet not realizing with that little money they got, they will get shoddy stuff regardless of the origin.
We haven't had any complaints with the handful of Chinese-assembled vehicles we've driven so far on this show, but we've certainly heard from those in the comments who have something negative to say just because they love causing drama.
Kudos, this was a much, much better review than some of your previous efforts. Being able to have the car for a week certainly gives you the opportunity to find all the fantastic or irksome qualities of the car. I'm looking forward to your newer reviews as I wander the back catalogue of this channel.
I mean if you're going from the Maserati video to this episode I can see why. Almost two years of improvements, gear changes, and fine tuning make a major difference in the way our show feels. I can't watch the older videos I've done compared to anything I've produced in 2019, and I imagine it's a similar feeling for a lot of other automotive journalists who look back on their earlier work. Hopefully you like the more recent episodes we've been producing!

I really hope so! I know the Toronto press fleets already have the 2019 V60 & S60 models from the launch the other week. I spoke with our local guy, and the cars for Montreal exist, they just haven't been prepared yet. I had the pleasure of seeing a V90 drive by about a month ago, absolutely stunning car to look at, likely even better to drive!

Really good review. I disagree about the ambient lighting. It shouldn't look like a carnival or fun house like too many brands are going for. It screams juvenile instead of adult sophisticated bliss. Volvo got it right when it comes to that. Too distracting otherwise.
I agree that the lights will come down to personal taste. It all depends on what you want out of the car. Either way these Volvos are real pleasures to drive.

I wonder if BMW will offer that setup on other vehicles, as they don't sell the Active Tourer here in Canada. I believe the xDrive(30)40e setup they use on the X5 and 530e are more traditional hybrid setups.

Loved your very comprehensive review, however I'm puzzled as to why you didn't even once mention the incredible acceleration this thing has. been one of the fastest accelerating Volvos ever! The main reason it's top of my list currently along with some luxury. Economy is just a little bonus.
For PHEVs we really don't hammer the accelerator, however if you want to see what we think about a high-performance version, we did feature the 2020 Volvo S60 T8 Polestar Engineered not long ago: th-cam.com/video/ut3QMTy8YAQ/w-d-xo.html
at least on toyota hybrids car when you put selector on B it dont increase electric regeneration but keep connected the engine if you release the throtle, with normal D mode when you leave gas pedal, the engine not only cut off fuel like any car but only disconnected engine from transmission so you can drive longer by inertia.
B is suggested to be used only on long downhill, when battery (on none plug in is very small) is full and regen no longer help, so put in B prevent to decent downhills in neutral.
im not sure how volvo sistem works but probably is something like that.
Probably similar. I'm surprised there wasn't more documentation on the regen system from Volvo, everything else about their e-Drive was extremely thorough. The XC90 T6 we have right now will show us when we're coasting in Eco mode, probably works the way you've described.

We’re excited to see what they’ve got planned next. We’re jumping into the 2019 V60 Inscription in a few weeks, and hoping to get some Polestar models in the summer.
The one thing I dislike about this car is you have to charge it up for 6 hours every time you charge it and the pure electric mode range is about 25 miles
If you use a level 2 charger it’ll take about 2.5 hours to charge, but yes the overall range is pretty limited. We discussed that with the other Volvo PHEVs we’ve done since this episode.
Appreciate the night shots :) I noticed the center console on the chinese built S90 LWB is a lot cheaper than the first year (2017) when the S90 was SWB and built in Sweden. The V90 still has the nicer console though. Also, the black interior doesn't do the interior justice, the amber color or the really light beige/grey (if you're brave enough) is a lot better!
We would have loved the lighter colour, or that brown for the interior on this one! Seems like we're stuck with black for everything from Volvo, we're on our third vehicle this week and the interior is the same, and I believe the 2019 XC40 R-Design we have in December also sports a black interior. We'll have to check out some video/photo on the 2017 S90 to see what the console looked like, would it have been the same for all markets or just the European market?

Now that is interesting! I was going to say maybe it had to do with the T8 setup, the centre console loses space because of that battery compartment, but the XC60 we just had looked more like the photo you've provided than the S90's centre that we had. Same goes for the XC90 T6 we have right now. The wood trim in that photo looks way better than the piano finish, would have certainly prefered that!
@@PRNTestDrive unfortunately, it's not because of the trim, Volvo just cheapened up on the S90 LWB, if you configure an S90 T8 in whichever European country you want, it will still get the nicer center console because they get the SWB one

We couldn't hear the supercharger whine up on this one, but the 2019 XC60 T8 we dropped off on Monday definitely could! Driving up to our street was a lot of fun with that car, could hear the engine quite nicely as it forced all that air in. In terms of competition, the Infiniti Q70L is the only other mid-size executive car offered as a long wheelbase here in Canada, but in terms of price & it being a PHEV something like the BMW 530e is also direct competition.
Nice front but that can't be said about back of the car. For this year my winner is MAZDA 6!
Our big regret of 2018 was not booking the 2018 Mazda6 Signature from the press fleet. We had excellent views on our Snapshot episode on it, so maybe a full Spotlight wouldn't have done as well.

Nice video. Super weird to see what they call an s90 now. I have a 1998 s90, at that time it was Volvo's top of the line "luxury" sedan, trying to compete with stuff like the e38 and the s class. Even came with a Porsche designed inline 6 24 valve engine. If ever you would be interested in making a video on it let me know, I'm not far from the Montreal area. I'm curious to see how these new Chinese built ones will stand the test of time for reliability compared to the old ones. Only time will tell. One things for sure though, it sure isn't an eye sore. If I had the money to waste, I'd give it a shot.
It's definitely something we'd be interested in filming! We've wanted to get some classic Volvo cars featured. This S90 certainly felt luxurious, but more in line with a 5 Series or E-Class than the full size cars. I hope Volvo isn't setting themselves up for problems down the road, locking in the S90 at the mid-size segment with the S60 in the compact executive means there's no room for a proper full size luxury car. S100/S120 sounds really strange.
@@PRNTestDrive definitely agree with you about it being more inline with the 5 series of e class. My s90 feels the same. Europe was lucky and got an elongated wheelbase s90/960 in the 90s, called the s90 royal, which had a lot more options (mini drink cooler, adjustable rear seats, car phone, etc). Much more comparable to an s500 or 740IL of the time. I'll shoot you a message towards spring to see if you're still interested in filming. Gatineau is a total salt bucket right now. My e30 is serving as my winter beater at the moment hahaha. Cheers

The rear definitely grew on us over the week. We filmed the walkaround stuff on our second day with the car, and then our final wrap up the day before we dropped it off, and our thoughts changed quite a bit. Took some getting used to, but it really is a sharp looking car all around.
For most car manufacturers, they almost always ignore styling on back ends. Kind of like putting on your best shirt and jacket but forgetting your pants when leaving the house. In this case, a 10kWh battery takes only 2.5 hours to charge, but it has only 10 kWh capacity. Very disappointing.
We'd like to see a much bigger battery for the next generation, if Volvo wants to take the lead on phasing out fuel-burning engines they're going to need to do it.
Would it be possible for you when speaking in kph and kpg to convert to mph and mpg as a screen overlay for us Americans that watch and enjoy your videos?

Wish car manufacturers could eliminate that floor hump in back.
I believe Volvo has the potential to eliminate this in future models, if they stick with the dual motor setup but optimize battery tech so they can use more cells in less space. That's essentially what the rear floor tunnel is used for on their T8 models.

We do too! We're glad Volvo is still producing wagon variants, and selling them here in Canada. We spotted a V90 about a month ago, couldn't take our eyes off of it. Hoping the V90 hits the press fleet in the new year, but I do know the 2019 V60 is being delivered here shortly, hoping to jump on it as soon as we can!

Turbo, supercharged and hybrid!
That's definitely going to be the big question. Most feel that forced induction engines have shorter lifespans, now with a twin charge setup it could have an even shorter shelf life. We're driving the 2019 XC90 T6 this week, same petrol motor without the hybrid, and we're really missing that electric oompf.
How much does it goes after full charge ?
About 30-40km depending on how you drive and what the climate is like.

Great question, but the answer might not please you unfortunately. The license plates have expired on it, and there's no ETA for when we'll be able to get the extensive work done on it to pass the local safety inspection to get new plates. We've parked it for the winter, still need to disconnect the main battery though.

Previous design language had a different flow for the lettering blending in with the trim, and often wasn’t as large as this on their sedans, wagons, and hatchbacks.

5:54 Nile I do not like the styling of brake lamps. (The wagon's brake lamps look much better.) The sedan's lamps have an awkward and dissonant shape. As far as I can tell, there is no link to any historical Volvo styling cue. I would have preferred a brake lamp style that evolved the Peter Horbury style of Volvos of the late 1990's - 2000's - a generally triangular shape with a distinct "hip line." Perhaps even more interesting would have been a modern interpretation of the simple, tall rectangular tail lamps on the mid 1960's Volvo 164 - one of the more elegant sedan's in the Volvo heritage.
Otherwise, this is a very attractive car. At the same, it's just sort of "meh" for me. It's really nice but is it really a luxury car? It's rather expensive, but is it prestigious? It's nice looking, but is it cool? In my view, the answer to all of these questions is "no". Top line Volvos have always had a conflicted personality. They suit people who want a really nice car (with safety as a priority) without being ostentatious.
If the PHEV wasn't THE selling point, I'd choose a lot of its competitors over this Volvo.
Your comment sums up everything about the trio of Volvo episodes we're working on! This is a great looking sedan, agreed, but you're also right in saying that it just blends in at the same time. We certainly had people looking at us, but probably because so few of these S90s are sold in Canada to begin with. Our friend with the 2011 C 63 AMG mentioned the same thing to us today about the prestige brand, BMW and Mercedes certainly have that, but does Volvo? Not really. It sure has the features, safety, and tech to make it luxury, but doesn't seem to fall into the same category as BMW or Mercedes. Sort of like Lexus, they're fantastic cars, but most don't see them the same way as the German luxury brands.

To answer your last statement, most cameras can't capture the high refresh rate of LED lights, so they flicker that way due to the shutter speed. As for the fog lamps, for some reasons Volvo doesn't offer them on the T8 hybrid models. Why? I couldn't tell you, but it seems to be common in the industry as plenty of EV/PHEV vehicles with a fuel counterpart lose the fog lights.

As far as I know the petrol versions should all have front fog lights, it’s just the PHEV models that don’t. I think it had something to do with the cooling system for the batteries that ended up going where the fog lights were. The 2017 models should have them. We just had a 2019 S60 T6 R-Design and it had front LED fog lights.

It's not that way anymore. A lot of Mercedes and BMWs SUVs are built in the USA. There are Hondas built in the USA. The Volvo s60 is built in the USA. Some Kias are built in the USA. Some Volvos are built in Sweden, some in Belgium, some in China and some in the USA.

the rear end is quite ugly, but big volvo letters is not a good idea and overall seems the bad copy of the rear end of dodge charger
A lot of manufacturers are going with these 'C' shaped lights these days, not sure who thought it was a good idea. We've had two Volvo crossovers since filming this S90, the large VOLVO lettering works better on those than this does.

Ever heard of a manufacturers warranty (up to 50,000 miles) and a subsequent extended warranty (up to 100,000 miles) if you purchase a new Volvo or any other new vehicle? If you lease a new Volvo, the dealership makes any repairs at no cost to the lessor. Doesn't seem to be much out of pocket expense, now does it?
You said the magic word lease I don't lease I buy so I'm looking at when the warranty goes off the Volvo would definitely be under lease only like I don't know what time it is I'm done ✌
I prefer buying to leasing myself. I've never kept any car past 100,000 miles so I would trade it prior to the expiration of an extended warranty. My current 2017 XC90 will most likely be traded within the next 4-5 years. My initial reply was in response to you stating the excessive out of pocket owner costs of maintaining a newer Volvo, which warranties would negate.
We expect these vehicles will be leased, especially something like this S90 with an MSRP closing in on $100k CAD. Considering most of our electronics are assembled in China, I don't see this car's origin being a problem for long-term reliability over the Volvos built in Sweden. We did have the XC60 T8 last week, and this week the XC90 T6, both of those built in Sweden. If we didn't check the VINs on either 3 cars, we'd have a hard time telling which was the Chinese car.
The car front is gorgeous, but the rear is hedious

It’s actually a common misconception. Yes, if you are using something Made in China and it’s of poor quality it’s not their fault but yours because you can only afford cheap stuff and it happens China is able to provide them. iPhone is also build in China and is of great quality, well, complainers can’t afford them....
However, when it comes to cars. It’s actually reasonable to say manufactured in China means equal or worse quality considering China’s lower safety standards on cars. From VW to Toyota, any Car company that set up factories in China will produce lower quality cars to be more competitive. In China when you buy cars you will be asked if you want a foreign version or a local version, and the latter is usually cheaper, for good reasons. So yeah the idea that cars manufactured in China do have the tendency to lower standards but, if the car needs to enter the EU market, it had to follow a higher standard, even higher in case of U.S. so even though it might still be manufactured in China, the part of the model that exports to U.S will not yield in quality.
