As a 19 year old growing up in the UK, i can tell you this was bigger than any world cup in Football, Rugby or Cricket. I've never seen an entire nation so engulfed in Cricket as I saw that summer. Every pub was full, every damn tram and bus had people glued to the radio listening to scores and every house had a tele where the match was being shown. It's almost as if for 2 months, the nation forgot about everything else going on and just focused on the cricket. I've seen the hype created in the nation when we came to the semis in football world cup in 18 or when we were in Euro finals last year. I remember the 03 world cup victory or our victory over all blacks in 2019. I remember our bloody brilliant victory in 2019 at Lords and Stokseys heroics at Headingly. But nothing quite captured the hearts and minds of English folks like this series in 05. Freddie was a household name and Warnie a household obsession. We loved to loathe him but so wished he was one of ours. I doubt I'll ever see such atmosphere for any sport ever again in the UK.
It was the same in India as well. 2005 Ashes is one of the most watched sporting events ever. Ponting's centurty at that Old Trafford test was the most amazing century I have ever seen
Agreed. Barely did any work that summer. People came into the hop industry was working in were a big disruption to my viewing 😂. Maybe cricket is better able to bypass the (dumb) social structure of English society than some other sports. Maybe we don’t hate the players as much as some other sports…. Maybe we don’t expect to beat the Ozzies too… Whichever reason it was or a mix of them (plus some decent weather helps), it was a great series and a great summer.
Not just in UK. Even in Pakistan Karachi the atmosphere among the cricket fan was same. We the group of friends would join in a tea cafe where TV was continuously switched to Ashes 2005 from afternoon 3 PM to midnight 11 we were glued and cafe manager was not allowed to change the channel even for News. All of us were supporting England as Australia was full of Superstars and England had not won the Ashes since 1987.
Australia had bigger legends (like they always do) but England had a united team with players playing to their maximum potential. Flintoff and Simon Jones had the best series of their lives. And they won.
This series got my 10 & 12 year old daughter’s into cricket. Eldest said I want to go to that. I took her next year to TB for the test and we’ve been ever year since. She is now 30.
RIP Warney, came back to watch the highlights because he was such an incredible player. Nearly singlehandedly won this game and terrified English cricket fans every time he came on to bowl.
Freddy was a beast, Even though he acts too much sometimes. His talent, confidence and fighting spirit is exceptional. Great to watch the way he plays , players like him gives life to the game.
Ricky ponting and Mark waugh were two all time best catchers.. . They could just pluck the miracle catches.. And they almost never dropped any easier ones.
Thanks for uploading these, great stuff. I remember watching with my Dad when Geraint Jones skied it and we both yelling "oh no!" we thought we were going to lose the Ashes.
There was one player that everyone feared. No matter how you tried to hide it or deal with it, I’m pretty sure all that faced the *GOAT* got butterflies. The team v Australia e.g Warnie could be 150/2 needing 49 to win and before you knew it 177/7. That was Australia too to be fair, but with Warnie, you’re convinced as are their team and fans that they will win…… As an England fan it was/is a pleasure to have watched him and still shall be.. Sure everyone liked him too..Rip fella, you’ll be remembered by all that saw you and I for one will show vids of you to those that love cricket 🏏 I’m sure they’ll be in awe of how Mr Warne made the ball jump, spin up to 90°! As for the ball that *BALL OF THE CENTURY* *Baffled* as the batsman they’ll *BE*.

@@dksaran4215 India dominant ? What you are talking about. India is still struggling to win overseas. Don't argue about India winning in Australia 7 months ago, you know that team had missing all the key players !!
I have never been as tense watching cricket as i was on the last afternoon of this Test. I felt sure we'd blow it. If we'd needed another 25 runs I think Australia would have won. Lee's ball to get Freddie absolutely sublime, and supreme skill and competitiveness from Warne.
still remember watching this very late back in Australia. Vivid memories of Warne and Lee ripping up the England order and being excited thinking that they might pull off a miracle. What a match. What a series.
I remember those days as if they were just a week ago....just got my first laptop, didn't care about that....had my first year at uni, didn't care about that...the best Ashes series of all time....bring it on.
Classy Aussie team the second it was over, shook hands, collected stumps for England players, the current Aussie team could learn a lot from this great team,
capio78 Garbage. This 2005 Australian team was considered "arrogant" as well if you remember correctly, just like the team 10 years earlier. And guess what, the Australian team of 2025 will also be considered "arrogant" so long as they're as good as the current team is.
The 2005 ashes is one of the best series ever. Vaughan, pieterson ,hoggard ,harmison and many others. On the other hand aus had lee, mcgrath, ponting and warne. 💛🧡❤️🔥
you dont get this tension in any other sport, not even in the short forms of cricket. its still nail-biting to watch the highlights almost 20 years later, knowing how it all played out, but watching a close, dramatic test match unfold in real time over 5 days is just magic.
Several examples of good sportsmanship in this. Tait acknowledging a good shot, Freddies ton being congratulated by Warne. Shame about Punters little radge but this was two great teams well matched and i'll be enjoying the youtube repeats every now and then for the rest of my days i expect.
I was at a county match at Northamptonshire during the fourth day of this test, yet everyone was gathered around a TV in the clubhouse as it went on. After Hoggard hit that four to take England within touching distance, people were chanting "Hoggard for opener! Hoggard for opener!" :)
Just because England won by 2-1. For me the best Ashes happened in 2006-07 and 2013-14, complete dominance 5-0, taking english players into depression, some even into coma.

This series was the Woodstock of cricket. What a Summer, what a festival. Without the wonderful contribution of the Aussies it wouldn't have been possible. That's something of which everyone seemed very conscious. There was a great vibe about the whole series. Ponting had his little hissy fit but watching a little chap get angry is always quite funny.
Watching this is still awful cos I think we will lose!! It was that visceral and painful and puts me right back! But of course we did win and all in the world was well!
I’m sure this was the game when Australia had to follow on. They nearly did a Kolkata 2001 on us. Michael Vaughan nearly paid a massive penalty for perhaps being over-confident!. If we’d have lost that game he would have never have been able to forget it. Thankfully Giles and Hoggard got us home and the rest is history.
I think you've missed the context a bit. England hadn't had a sniff of an ashes win in a long time. They outplayed them in the 3rd test but only drew the match and now England were on top again, they had to make them follow on, they had to make the aggressive decision almost as a show of strength and a belief in themselves.
Yes, although Hoggard did swing the ball, but Simon Jones had that raw pace with his swinging deliveries. I really felt sorry for him when I heard of his injury.
still gives me tingles. Awesome series. As a pommy living down under now i have a great admiration from the aussie side but ill be backing England all the way. Especially after the current tour of India, we are looking awesome
