Bureaucracy in Spain dictates an official request is necessary for central government to take control of an emergency but it can also take control unilateraly if it's grave enough. One part is being prideful and the other is letting people drown for political gain. Both are to blame. Spain isn't lacking in manpower, technical services or know-how. In fact we just have too many intermediaries, pencil-pushers, form-stampers and politicians in general getting in the way of true citizens. 3) Metereological services sounded the alarms several days in advance, and then again hours before the disaster. But the bureaucracy was incapable or unbothered as always. 4) Humans are simple creatures, the areas with more deaths didn't see much rain at all before they got flooded as the big rain events happened further upstream. This is a regular occurrence in Valencia. The same 'Cold drop' was responsible for the 1957 flood and Wikipedia states "A large number of floods have been recorded in Valencia, from 1321 to 1897. Up to 75 floods are estimated to have taken place in the seven centuries prior to the 1957 flood." So unless climate change was around in the year 1321 this was not caused by 'climate change'.

How can our system not see how important it is to invest in it's own people? Our system puts profit above all else & they chase ever increasing growth no matter how unrealistic & toxic that is.. Our system refuses to Change or Adapt. Our society is in complete denial...

Spain is the 2nd most mountainous country in Europe. If it rains 500 liters/m2 in 7 hours and a river overflows in elevated areas, the torrent of water and mud is brutal. There is no drainage that can withstand that massive amount of water in such a short time. .
Focus on the immediate needs of the people. Retrieve those dead people and be given proper burial. The survivors not only need food ,clothing and shelter but also psychological advice. They also need to talk to their relatives that's why communication lines should be restored. After all of that they can now review why there is a delay of warning and rescue operation. . Also their weather bureau 's reporting failed to warn of catastrophic flood coming to Valencia region.

@eh1702 Not in significant enough ways in the North for our wealthy nation to start noticing anyways. Many small local farmers in our area have given up farming these past years. I plant varieties that can handle different extremes now, it's the only safe bet you can make in all this craziness.

Consequence of irresponsible family planning, millions of tons of Co2 coming out of 9Billion people every year can’t be doing the climate any good? One child per family should be made compulsory from now on.
You can see the flooding from satellite (ESA). More flooding, more droughts, more wildfires, more storms will come even if everything right is done now. But the measure of how bad it will come can be regulated!!! Exceeding the tipping point of the AMOC, which may already have happened, means, among other things, a cold blob in northern Europe and the UK. Colliding temperature extremes are a cradle of storms. Massive energy savings and reduction of dependency from electricity and heating agents for our families can be achieved with extremely good insulation, a radical application of well known techniques including the solar chimney (e.g. as Trombe-Wall) in architecture. Cities and building planners must implement protection against floods, storms and heat waves promptly and efficiently. FYI: wikipedia Trombe_wall wikipedia Solar_chimney wikipedia Windcatcher It has never been more important for politics to deliver more than empty promises. Instead, the priorities for the allocation of funds and legislation must take account of the foreseeable emergency, which, even if we were to do everything right now, will occur with one hundred percent certainty.
What doesn't even mean to rebuild, when next year or sometime later in this year for a few months left of it, another extreme weather event will pile another round of damage. The assertions of mainstream Economist like Nordhaus, assured the world in the 90s that would be min consequences to the global economy, even though climatologist thought this was garbage. They largely ignored economist is spouting nonsense. Unfortunately, there is a very high cost to the greater weight given to the mainstream economic schools. They were the ones who assured the world, and they were the ones who suggested that climate change was going to be mostly a problem of the global south. As a European I would not want to pay for the reconstruction. Scientists have warned about these phenomena and the risks and yet more and more people are settling in the Valencia region. And when I hear the Prime Minister say: “we will rebuild Valencia as it was before” it is utter stupidity. He is not even capable of analyzing that his policy is a cause of these misfortunes and does not understand that when nature says stop concrete and construction near rivers then we must listen to it.

125 floods, no 75.
People have very short memory. Well, they dont even learn from history books. Attention span of a fly. Is it by design so it's easier to rule over gullible pips?
This flooding in Spain is utterly devastating. People have struggled to one day buy a house & yet a storm can come by & completely destroys it. Our current society is completely failing at dealing with these problems. So why should the people not lose hope, since our system is completely broken & failing to deal with these major issues? How can our system not see how important it is to invest in it's own people? Our system puts profit above all else & they chase ever increasing growth no matter how unrealistic & toxic that is.. Our system refuses to Change or Adapt. Our society is in complete denial...
The Spanish government should use a monetary stimulus to help the people

First recorded Gota Fría was in 19th Century and occur regularly. The 1957 incident near Barcelona caused 617 deaths. Too easy to blame climate change, rather take a look at the amount of urbanisation of the flood plain adjacent to the Albufera wet lands. This tragedy is more directly man made than looking to catastrophize climate change, instead question building development policy.
Very nice that the EU are ready to help!!!

How could something like this happen?
Yet we humans keep building by flood plains!
I hope EU 🇪🇺 money will go to the help the Spaniards and not end up with in the Spain 🇪🇸 government.
Regional government know, or they should know, the exact water path. They just ignore the warnings and even the regional president declared that day ag 1pm that the danger will be over at 6pm. To make things worse their response is an absolute disastre
피해가 너무 큰게 너무나도 안타깝지만 배수시설이 제대로 안되어 있었던거 같네요....
Spain is the 2nd most mountainous country in Europe. If it rains 500 liters/m2 in 7 hours and a river overflows in elevated areas, the torrent of water and mud is brutal. There is no drainage that can withstand that massive amount of water in such a short time. .
Very sad. Where is the EU help
So sorry Valencia. 😢 Stay positive.
Be honest no one to blame if you have a years worth of rain in 1 day
Already for many years these parts of Spain have problems with fluding. People keep building in the same places. Don’t blaim climate change.
Get used to this. Water levels are going up. All city's near water are at risk.
I could not imagine experiencing such a horrific tragedy! Hopefully the people receive more help than those in Asheville NC.
It’s happening in these areas since over hundreds of years.
People are slow of learning.
Wrong, for starters its polítics of bringing down many dams during years and not clearing channels
UN needs to maintain records of the dam, and they need to audit also globally.
30 years warning
I was looking at a place near Valencia a couple of years ago. I wonder what towns have been affected.
Sad 😔 global warming is real god bless Spanish 🇪🇸 people love from India 🇮🇳
God bless Spain we Moroccans stand with you and are ready to provide with help
Ukraine still will get more money, help/weapons than our friends from Spain :(
Honestly, this shows the flaws of the Spanish government. They’re to focused on fighting each other in parliament, that they forget what actually needs to be done for the people.
Devastating! However do people remember what happened in Türkiye last year, or that was not that important?
The government is responsible they need to be held accountable
Tendran que subir los muros de ese acueducto y elevar las carreteras
This is what happens if we continue to with carbon emissions in the rest of Europe, here in the Netherlands our southern province, Limburg has been suffering of floods aswell. All my love to the people of Spain! Let’s hope we can end the extreme climatic change before it gets even worse! ❤
@ I’m quite sorry, but multiple outlets have said this is ‘unprecedented’, which means never seen before. And I have scoured the internet for previous floods of this kind in the region and there haven’t been any reports of it in Roman times up until now.
@@gundissalinus So if you were to show me a source which would attest to your claims, I would gladly retract my statements
@@gundissalinus And I mean, Climate change is an actual problem that will effect us, here in the Netherlands we will notice a lot of it soon, we are already below sea level, and that will probably continue on and worsen
@@gundissalinusThe same argument again and again from people like you who never heard of statistics. But of course your stubbornness will never accept that climate change that might not cause this specific flood, but does increase the frequencies of floods.
Don’t you believe me? Than you should also stop making use of every modern technology like phones, cars, GPS, medicine, mri-scanners, etc. Why? Because these inventions are based on exactly the same scientific principles as our knowledge of climate change. These principles form the basics of sciences, such as physics, statistical analysis and quantum mechanics.
But I suppose my explanation is the same as explaining to a Golden Retriever in words why you cannot walk at the other side of the street light pole when he’s on a leach.

There are no flood plains which are a part of the rivers. Rapid urbanisation is the cause of such disasters.

You’ve missed out the most important point - population is out of control, pressure on scarce resources is increasing alarmingly, need to have compulsory birth control.
@daveoliver5838 Excessive consumerism of the west led by greedy capitalism, historical greenhouse gas emitters consuming fossil fuels are now developed nations, everything needs to be addressed and reparations should be made before suggesting population control.
@daveoliver5838 The excessive consumerism led by greedy capitalism that the global North and west does is the major reason too. The historical greenhouse gases emissions from fossil fuels that led to development of nations is also the factor. Per capita CO2 emissions are way more higher in developed nations than other countries.
Why hasn't the EU designated search and rescue teams to help Spanish residents?
They need to get in first, Spanish authorities are gate keepers to how
Invest in water magnement ..An build a warning system.

Global food supply chains are already breaking down. Just not yet in the northern hemisphere.
@eh1702 Not in significant enough ways in the North for our wealthy nation to start noticing anyways. Many small local farmers in our area have given up farming these past years. It's one disastrous crop year after another, with early winter thaws followed by early cold snaps, or intense floods following record drought and heat...
I plant varieties that can handle different extremes now, it's the only safe bet you can make in all this craziness.

It has never been more important for politics to deliver more than empty promises.

When your country gets its share of climate change, I will also say the same.
The level of saying the first thing that pops into your head without having a clue is impressive.

Los angeles, california USA, did the solution long decades ago. Even on the holywood movies we see that solution being used on the movies. Its exists. Nothing new to be invented. Just expropriate land and dig the diverting channels. Tie the the rivers entry to force water divertion to the channels in a flood event. But that costs money.
Farmers must accept to their farm land to be flooded to protect cities. A crop lost are much cheaper lost that a city to be flooded.
Algunos acueductos funcionaron, podrían mejorar las instalaciones seguro, no haber construido en algunas zonas también, pero hay pueblos y patrimonio con más de 600 años de antigüedad. Long term solution, plant trees and block rivers to forested lower land flood areas.

These catastrophes will inexorably worsen, year after year, city after city, in every zone that is not instead devastated by unending droughts (until they're demolished by the sudden and unwelcome flooding rains as seen here in Valencia). We're stuck in an endless loop of consumption married to obligatory economic growth, completely untethered from the reality of true global limits: we can't elect better weather, fewer microplastics, cooler oceans, etc.
