This is a phenomenal costume/puppet! Great work! Its a shame to hear the children say "chicken" or "turkey". Most children don't even know what the hell The Dark Crystal is anymore. Thank you for keeping our film history alive through hard work and imagination :)
AMEN!! I am so sad more don't know the movie (I've had my kids watch on DVD, but I think I was jumping the gun, as the beginning is a bit slow, and they were still young!)... but the costume is PHENOMENAL!!! I would not be surprised to hear you say you worked in the Henson shop and this was one of the prototypes you somehow were able to keep... it's AMAZING work... OH- and I was so hoping to see you at the end (meaning see you remove the costume and take a bow!! )
That's why we have things like Amazon prime, Vudu or netflix to show movies or shows we grew up with and anyone who grew up in the 80s or 90s like me, i'm 35 know of this movie
Thankyou for the compliment. I've used it for two years now during Halloween and my neighborhood expects me to do something new each year. I thought about donating the costume to our local haunted house so more people can see it. Thanks for watching!
How cool would it be if all the actual skeksis puppets ran around on Halloween night. It would be terrifying seeing a bunch of grotesque looking bird like creatures running around in the dark, screaming about taking people’s essence, but it would be cool at the same time.
I love how some of the kids come up to you obviously thinking "I don't trust this thing". lol our neighborhood had a guy in a scarecrow costume who was the same way when I was a kid.
All I got to say is Epic!!! This is so cool that another Generation of Children are able to witness the horror of the Skeksis!!!! I love the Dark Crystal. Its a One of a Kind Gem I think all children should see : ) But that Costume is Spot on along with that Scream!!! I wish I could have been the Chamberlain with you and give his Wimper to the children lol!!!
Oscar, Your tutorial was a BIG help while making this costume! Thanks for sharing it and thankyou for the compliments. I'm considering making another skeksis for this halloween...maybe the dying emperor.
Outstanding work, the details are out of this world. I take it the head was a hand puppet. I couldn't tell where your eyes was, behind the black fabric under the head?
I really appreciate the compliment. You're right about the head...it was a puppet. My head was at the very back of the costume with my right arm extended forward operating the skeksis head. So that I could see, I had black screen on the front below the head and on the sides just behind the shoulders.
What makes this even better is that the specific Skeksis you dressed up as is SkekShod, the Treasurer, the one you'd least expect to hand out anything or let people take anything from. XD
+ruckstande I started with a tutorial on "instructables" and continued on from there. I probably ended up overbuilding the costume...took me months to complete...the kids sure loved it though!
Just an old fan passing by: it's been so long ever since I saw your first prank video featuring this lovely skekShod and commented on it: this one keeps bringing a smile to my face years later. What an incredible costume. From one nerdy fan to another, I can't but keep applauding you for the wonderful job you did with this Shod.👏👏👏
@@augsburgdiet1530 It's well deserved! No wonder people still remembers it; yours is easily one of the best home-made Skeksis costumes I've ever seen (and as a lifelong fan I don't say that lightly) ^^
Thanks! We have a HUGE turnout every year for Halloween...they keep coming back to see what costume I will build next. I think the skeksis has been their favorite so far!
I'm humbled that you would consider featuring the costume in your blog, you certainly have my permission to use it. About the tutorial...unfortunately I never did take any early photos or document the costume's progress. I really wasn't sure if I could complete it or even have it look anything remotely like a skeksis. I did use a tutorial listed on the instructables website...it was a big help and really got the ball rolling. By the way, your cover of the soundtrack was very impressive!
Can I please borrow this costume for halloween???? The Dark Crystal is one of my childhood favorites, but I don't have the time, creativity or patience to make one myself! You are awesome. :)
That's really neat, but so much wasted potential. If it were me (and I may do this one year) I'd be going after the little ones screaming "Gelfling, kill the Gelfling!!" Or "MINE! I am STILL Emporer!!" Something more than just screeching--though it worked pretty nicely, I can't deny...
I think that particular Skeksis was the Treasurer, who had the least lines and was more of a background character. And I think the Treasurer would be more concerned about his treasure than who was Emperor or where the Gelflings were.
@CandiceTu86 I really appreciate your comments. This was definately a "learn as you go" project. I used a skeksis tutorial from instructables for the basics. I added all the rest of the detail by studying the creature from the movie. The costume was very tedious at times but I really enjoyed making it. All and all, it took around four months and many LONG nights to build. As far as the head/jaw movement, the head basically functions as a large puppett operated by my right hand and arm.
Skeksis: The General's Going To Get Mad At Me For LEAVING THE CASTLE SkekUng: WHAT Are You Doing? Skeksis: Its Halloween :) SkekUng: Hallow What? Atenae: Halloween Master SkekUng: Back To Work Atenae: (Goes Back To Her Work)
That looks really impressive, and I love the fact you scared small children in that thing too :), have you see a costume of skeksil the chamberlain? it was done by a British cosplayer, worth checking it out :)
couldn't imagine myself either being so crafty but it would be lovely to have someone dressed like that in one of my concerts lol hahah :) way cool, :) i'm impressed
Wow. Just. Wow. This costume is amazing. Well done, sir. Here's an idea: You should film a tutorial on how to make these and post it as well. I think a lot of people who are less creative (namely, myself) would appreciate that! 'Cuz I want one of these...BADLY....and I think the process of making it would be phenomenal. Or, if you want to make a few extra bucks, I'm sure there would be some interest in purchasing these costumes. :) Very impressive!! How do you move the head/lower mandible?
First off: How the heck did you make this? This is incredible. Please tell me someone at the Creature Shop has offered you a job by now. Second: I love how you manage to scare a few adults as well. xD But all I can think of when I see that costume is Chamberlain's whimpering. Out of curiosity, did anybody actually recognize what movie your costume was from?
Take some candy, but leave behind your essence.
Alejandro Molina do they last like juice?
OMG YES😂🤣 THE BEST REFERENCE TO THE MOVIE AND SHOW
😂
Hilarious
If that was the hunter, those kids wouldn't have stood a chance
If the garthim soldiers was guarding the candy they don't stand a chance either
"No! I am friend! Please...? Please! ... PLEASE!!!!"
Imagine if there was someone there dressed as a Garthim.
My uncle would HAPPILY take the job
That would be the best 🤗💞
I would totally be a Garthim.
Depends on how heavy the costume is
@@nethergollum4219 true, those actors had to have special harnesses built to allow them to take five while still in those Garthim costumes.
This is a phenomenal costume/puppet! Great work! Its a shame to hear the children say "chicken" or "turkey". Most children don't even know what the hell The Dark Crystal is anymore. Thank you for keeping our film history alive through hard work and imagination :)

I love this costume, even though I'm a bit late to the party lol
Hell if my mom made me go up there, I’d be crying my eyes out, she raised me on the Dark Crystal and Skeksis were my worst nightmare as a damn kid 😭
For real wow.
I was born Ten Years After this movie came out and as 11 I first saw the Dark crystal for the first time I was like this is scary and freaky
watch your mouth.

just hearing that music again brought freakin' tears to my eyes.
Holy cow, that thing is awesome, especially the details on the cloak. Shut up and take my money! :)
HOW IS UR SCREAM THAT PERFECT FOR THIS
Great costume of the Skeksis known as the Treasurer. Yes, he would be possessive over his treasure!
I love how some of the kids come up to you obviously thinking "I don't trust this thing". lol our neighborhood had a guy in a scarecrow costume who was the same way when I was a kid.
I'd totally hug this guy! LOVE the skeksis!

when theirs a skeksis on halloween night
LMAO I love the way he squawks like a bird of prey to scare the shit out of the kids. Epic.
dam, this is beyond amazing, I wish I was artsy enough to make something this detailed and beautiful. I'd have so much fun with it.

James Shride, I really appreciate the compliment and thanks for watching!
Now we just need Skekmal to chase the kids away
After seeing this I'm going to watch The Dark Crystal again. This is taking me back to my childhood. This was amazing
LOL classic! Best halloween idea ever! Dude, I doff my cap to you
I so wish I could meet and see this in person its beautiful
Wow, that is a truly phenomenal costume. I would have been terrified if I'd have seen you on Halloween!
What makes this even better is that the specific Skeksis you dressed up as is SkekShod, the Treasurer, the one you'd least expect to hand out anything or let people take anything from. XD
Excellent work. Wish I could see it in person. Looks like it is equal to a movie prop - again awesome work.
Richard! No! You wanna have nightmares?
No kidding. That movie gave an entire generation nightmares!
That has to be one of if not the best skeksis costume i've seen

that is amusingly awesome
who dose not love the DARK CRYSTAL
I also love how you chose SkekShod the Treasurer, the greediest and least talkative of them all
I can agree with that 🤗
Thankyou for watching and thanks so much for your compliment on the costume.
This is fantastic! You put my Nazghul costume to utter shame.
INCREDIBLE!!
Could you maybe create a tutorial of how you made this? It's the best Skeksis costume I've ever seen.
This is way to cool!!!! I love it
This is an amazing costume. I found you through the wife and my husband and I are in awe.
Respect! that costume is beyond epic! good work! :)
THIS IS AMAZING
I've seen a lot of win over the years, but this is an all-new level.
