@@rosesweetcharlotte I remember seeing a video about the Jim hendson's puppet place, and some of the B-roll footage I saw was what appeared to be a newer puppet skeleton, and it was carbon fiber and machined aluminum. So looks like (at least the newer stuff) is built to withstand abuse.

I completely empathize with Julie. I am currently conserving SkekUng, Jen, Augrah, urNol, a Garthim, Fizzgig, some Pod People, and some random creatures from The Dark Crystal (and Labyrinth). Though my conservation technique is vastly different from Julie's restoration method, I am learning so much about the original build process. It's certainly quite the fortunate experience for me--an invaluable education.

privyfarms , I'm curious. I've been approached by several cos-players, who've challenged me to the task of creating a "screen-accurate" looking "Ludo", (from "Labyrinth"). I've been able to pretty accurately approximate much of Ludo's proportions, except his eyes. From all of my references, so far, I'm guessing his eyes were around 3-4 inches in diameter.
Would you happen to have come into contact with one of the three Ludo puppet/costumes that were used for filmming, (that I assume would need restoration by now, if they haven't turned completely to dust already)? If so, would you be able to confirm his eye-size? If not, would you possibly know anyone I could contact that would?

I remember seeing the skeksis in london on my 1 and only trip; I believe it was just inside a glass cabinet with a few metal rods to hold it up; the glass cabinet was transparent on all sides but the bottom and was in a well-lit area; although the area was lit up by a celing light and not natural light it was still pretty harsh.
It was also the one and only time I got to meet any of jim hensons work upclose, rather than on tv. Best part of my trip to london :D

These beautiful works of art weren't made to last very long, sadly because during the production of a film, creatures are made, purely to get the shot for the film, little thought is given to what happens afterwards.
Naturally, Jim Henson and Frank Oz and the whole creature shop wanted the film to be a success, but I don't think they realized at the time, how iconic these creatures would eventually become, how much of a LEGEND, the movie has become, that these character creatures, would eventually be preserved.
It would be nice, if the upcoming Netflix series, gives a bit of effort in actively preserving their creatures, making them last, and able to be displayed for a long period. Our technology has come a long way and though for the shot of the film the creatures have to look good, afterwards we preserve them better.

watching the new series and comparing it with the old movie i'm struck by the difference in pupetting level. like the body language and expressions were so much stronger in the old 80s movie. I'm worried puppeteering is becoming a lost art, but maybe part of the problem is the way the puppets themselves are constructed. this lady might be the only one who knows certain industry standards that are being lost.
but it's possible it's a change in the way we film things, these days. every decade, we shoot things closer and closer to the speaker's face with more jump cuts between action, rather than just showing everything happening in one cut. why do they do this? unless the puppet is REALLY emotional just in the face and never turns its head, that's not always going to be a good look. you could do more if you did more wide shots.
The Archer character just showed up in the last episode I watched and I noticed that character's expressions were what you'd expect from someone really on top of their stuff. kind of feel like that puppeteer has been in the industry longest BUT I DoN'T know.
