This is my absolute favorite scene of the film. Obviously I love so many different bits from this film, and have seen this movie so many times, but when he cries here, I always cry. You really feel how much he loves his daughter. Donald was such a seasoned actor and he really made me love this film that much more. I will cherish this scene even more now.
@@kaitlynr9271 Oh my gosh, me too. I find this scene so emotional. I lost my dad almost two years ago and this really gets me. Such a beautiful way to end the film (as originally intended).
@@joyegreg I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s interesting bc people crap on this movie in comparison to the mini series. I loved the mini series (getting many hours of this world is so amazing) but you cannot deny the deep-felt performances by the actors and cinematography Joe Wright and his team created. I can see why losing your dad would make this scene all the more poignant. I don’t have a relationship with my dad, so maybe that’s part of why this scene deeply moves me. Just unselfish love.
@@kaitlynr9271 Yes, whether you didn't get the dad you wanted or you did, either way this scene goes right to the heart. He loves his daughter the way we'd all like to be seen and loved. I'm so glad this scene got so much attention as we honored Mr. Sutherland's passing. Best to you.
Donald Sutherland welling up himself when he sees how happy she is truly one of the most beautiful moments on film. He was one of the great ones, truly. RIP🙏
I love this ending so much. Mr Bennet's approval is as important as the match - not just because of social mores, but because he adores Lizzie so much and knows her so deeply, that we know his approval means they are perfect for each other, otherwise he wouldn't approve. Donald Sutherland's performance is moving and wonderful - so beautiful to see a man be so blissfully happy for his daughter that he's moved to tears, mixed in with the sadness of "I won't get to see her every day". I also love that this ending leaves us hanging in anticipation (we never get to see Darcy and Lizzie kiss) - it leaves us excited for what's to come. The alternate ending is cute but too neat - this one has my heart.
Notice Kiera’s and Donald’s hands mirror each other when they cover their mouths? I wonder if it was rehearsed or just natural. They seemed to be so in tune with each other.
the casting director said that when he chose which actors to hire, he based "families" on which actors had similar mannerisms, as though they had grown up together.
Actually, the story is told in an interview that Donald Sutherland was quite conscious of his teeth, and brought his hand to his mouth on occasion. Both Kiera and Rosamund noticed this and took the mannerism for their characters. Mr. Sutherland was quite touched by the gesture.
⚘️ Yessss and every Papa has a favorite child if he has at least 3 or more, Lol & I believe Lizzy is his ❤ This is my most cherished scene between Mr Bennett & Lizzy ❤ God speed, Donald Sutherland 🤍🕊 🤍 I will never miss you because I will be watching you in Pride and Prejudice at least 2-3× a year ⚘️ and I'm not embarrassed to say so anymore 🤍🕊
Donald Sutherland...What an actor... I still can't comprehend that he is the villain in THG...Here he is a loving dad, so much warmth and there he was so cunningly calm and villianous as Snow. God!!! Love him!
The huge difference between both movies in his eyes only is IMMENSE!! While you can see icebergs breaking in his eyes in THG, which gave me cold sweat Every. Single. Time he appears on screen. In this scene his eyes are warm, loving, caring, happy, like a cozy fireplace in early autumn! This is what always gets me when I see great acting, like with Mister Donald Sutherland here!! I cannot help myself but smile warmly with him!! 😊
This is the scene that came to my mind when I heard of Donald Sutherland's passing on 6/20/24. May he be at peace and enjoy his well-deserved leisure. 🕯
Rest in peace, Donald. You were an incredible actor with many big roles, but this understated, sentimental role in Pride & Prejudice will always be my favorite. You never failed to make me cry here, and you immortalized the love between Lizzie and Papa in such a special way. You are part of the reason I love this film so much. Thank you, a thousand times.
A wonderfully understated performance. Everyone is mentioning Kelly’s Heroes and Oddball but this is the other side of Donald. Subtle and beautiful. RIP sir
There's an important element in this scene that was missing in P&P 1995: Lizzie explains (off-camera) what Darcy did to secure Lydia's marriage and we get to see the father's reaction "Good Lord, I must pay him back." That was a huge omission in 1995.
it really was. And it omitted one of Mr Bennet's famous comic lines "I will offer to pay him, he will rant and rave about his love for you and that will be the end of it". Benjamin Whitrow would have done that little scene so much justice. I think it's the one and only fault in the otherwise perfect 1995 P&P.
Dammit Keira is so beautiful in this movie! This is the first movie I watched from her (I was a 15yo teen I think) and from then I admired her and had some sort of a crush on her! Very emotional scene here, loved the father/daughter interaction!
Lizzie not wanting to break eye contact with Darcy as she shuts the door gets me every time. Follow that up with the beautiful moment between father and daughter and I’m a hot mess. In a good way!!!
The last line here always gets me..outside of Matthew MacFadyens Darcy stammering his I Love You to Elizabeth this scene is my favorite. We'll miss you Donald Sutherland❤
While it is edited at 1:39, I do miss the comment as poor Mr. Darcy paces outside the Bennet house, "I thought she didn't like him." "Neither did I" (as I recall).
I would love to leave these intact, but unfortunately TH-cam limits the amount of time you can upload for certain countries. I thought it was better to see the whole interaction between Lizzie and her father ❤️
You are absolutely right, Susan. I love this interaction between father and daughter. Despite the fact that, as a Catholic religious, I never married, but I have a very strong daughter drive. @@susanfirth9883
I didn't like this rendition of "Pride and Prejudice". It played too much like a gothic story: dark, grim and serious. The book portrays the dad as a deliberately obtuse dad who had a jovial nature, which allowed him to tolerate and, yet, appreciate his wife's foibles and Lydia's flightiness. Read the book....
It's the only version I've seen (I've seen several) that nails something essential about Darcy: The man is very shy, which, given his social position, comes across as arrogance.@@annefitz7346
Amen. And the directing kills me. I know these actors are fantastic; so why do they read their lines as if they’re doing a table read? It’s disgraceful.
What I love about this adaption is that the Bennets FEEL like a real family. You can feel it through Donald’s portrayal.

His portrayal of Mr. Bennett has always brought me to tears, but today it's got me extra misty-eyed. Rest in peace, Donald Sutherland.
The director said that Donald cried at every take of that scene. Mr. Sutherland must have a strong paternal "daughter drive."
