    Hi Davie, no worries at all. 811s is still a great hook for salt and I can use them for gotcha’s and a lot of saltwater patterns. I appreciate the link to the other hooks. Keep up the great work and happy new year!

    Another easy way to add a hot-colored head to the fly is to simply use marking pen on the thread. Almost everyone who does this uses only drab colors, but markers come in bright flourescents as well. If you want to test it before trying it on a nearly completed fly, just start your thread, color it, let it dry for a minute or two, and shine your UV curing light on it. It will quickly become obvious which markers you should try. Often, the student-type highlighters from the discount store show up quite well.

    Davie. I hope you and your family are well. It's been up and down over here. Had one family member with coved . He's doing well now, (by the grace of God) . Your videos help so many people who are at home. Even if they are not Fishermen or fishing Ladies you offer them something new and interesting. Will... here's wishing you well and God bless. Walter

      Hi Walter,
      We are all fine thank you. , I can sympathise with your friend as this virus did knock us back and even after a few weeks since we had the virus my wife and son still can't taste or smell though we were very lucky as it could have been a lot worse...I have had my first jag so here's hoping this helps as well...I'm glad that the videos have helped and I have to say they have helped me a lot as well as they have gave me something to keep my mind busy as well as all the kind words I get makes a huge difference to the way I feel...I would like to wish you and your family well...

    Pedantic (me), but if you under wrap between the eyes and hook shank, as you say, "...nice and tight" (almost like wrapping a parachute hackle over a post) it tightens up the X wraps - eyes don't twist when fishing quite as much.
    That's the prettiest Gotcha I have ever seen. I tried a whole wood duck flank feather rather than the slips of summer duck (Are they the same critter?) and it scared the shrimp shells out of some pretty simple bonefish in Belize.
    I like your minimalism.

    Wonderful tying again Davie. Questions: What are your thoughts on the Norvise system? Have you ever tried to tie rotary style? What vise brand would you recommend and what bobbin are you using?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jason Hill,
      Watching Norm Norlander using his vise it's certainly a vise worth looking at...I own a rotary vise but as you can see in the video I rarely use it as one..If you can it would be worthwhile going along to a fly show or even better a fishing club that may have tying classes as you will see all the different types of vices being used and this will help you make a choice...The bobbin holder I use is the Tiemco Heavy Duty which allows you to use flosses, and wires as much as threads..I hope this is of some help to you...
      All the very best Davie

    • @jasonhill8995
      @jasonhill8995 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Davie McPhail it does, I actually have owned two Norvise and have fabricated two other versions for my self one angled jaws and the other with a Regal vise head. I do enjoy them and was wondering if you had ever tried them yourself. Thank you for the bobbin info as j like the black look!
      All the best and remember JESUS loves you and desires a relationship with you and your family!

    Hi David, I bought a pack on Tiemco 811s hooks on a size 6 and they look very different from the one you used to tie this fly. Shank was shorter and it was a stainless steel hook, overall it is a very small hook. Can you confirm again what hook you used to to the gotcha? Thanks so much!!!

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mvalbano,
      I bought these hooks a few years ago as a job lot and I was told they were Tiemco Saltwater Shrimp, but as there was no packaging I had to accept them as this but you are making me think that this may be wrong unless they have changed the style since then as this sometimes happens..I'm very sorry that you have bought these hooks because of me and they are not the same. It is hard to see and judge the hooks online though I did a search and the nearest to the hook I used would be the Partridge Saltwater Shrimp hook so I have attached a link for you to see though I would buy the size 4 which looks more like the size 6 I used in the video...Please let me know how you get on..
      All the very best Davie..

    How do you attach flies to your leader so the hook is on top please Davie?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dewi Jones,
      With the eyes being on top of the shank it will force the hook to swim upside down so any good knot will do, though a knot worth tying would be a rapala knot....
