I am currently in process of building a largely scratch built model of HMS Sovereign of the Seas. The model will depict the ship as it was originally built in 1635, before the first rebuild of 1649-1650. The Mantua model has many inaccuracies, and it takes a lot of scratch work to make the hull and fittings accurate. There is NO kit made that has accurate carved decoration for this ship, which is a real shame for those of us who cannot carve the hundreds of decorations which cover the upper hull. The best and most accurate models of this ship are still scratch built.
My stepfather was a master ship model builder and made this ship. When he passed away, I got this huge beautiful ship model and another huge model, was 2400 bucks in 2013 to have them shipped from Fl to Il in a huge semi, and the only cargo was these two ships. The driver hand carried in and inspected for any damage.
Thank you so much for sharing that story! It's amazing to hear about your stepfather's incredible talent as a ship model builder. The fact that you inherited these two huge, valuable ship models must be truly special.

to darvis, i am looking into this amazing ship to do the same, living in London I had the chance to see the original drawing (one page only) and talk to a lot of amazing peoples there about this ship , but after month of debate with so many peoples , one thing is certain , this ship had few modification done with time but no record can be found to actually described everything in details only few period painting here and there , so please tell me where did you actually found the exact schematic for that period , that would be wonderful to know !
Ship plans that I publish on the channel from the archive of the company that used to make sets of ship models. These plans are the most convenient for modeling. There are many ship plans from the world's maritime museums. About Sovereign of the Seas - at Royal Museums Greenwich there are two technical drawings and a scanned picture: www.rmg.co.uk/collections/search/Sovereign%20of%20the%20Seas

I am getting details from one primary source, the the print made before the ship's construction by John Payne. It has a few errors, such as showing guns in the gun port closest to the bow (which were not fitted on the ship because they interfered with anchor handling). It is the earliest detailed image of the ship. Willem van de Welde's drawings after a complete refit of the ship are used for comparison, and it too has the same error mentioned above, actually copied FROM Payne! The best source for details of how the ship was configured originally comes from Hames Sephton's book "Sovereign of the Seas: The Seventeenth-Century Warship". Be advised that we know FAR LESS that what we don't know when trying to model any ship older than 1800. Researching a model from 1636 is often making choices from features known on similar vessels of the time rather than precise knowledge of what was on the ship your are researching. That especially goes for trends in rigging styles, and the colors used on the vessel itself.

Aww yes, the Golden Devil named by Dutch Mariners because it was gold plated from top to bottom and smashed the Dutch fleets not once, but over 10 times in the First and 2nd Anglo Dutch wars. as a Dutch Mariner I would be scared to death seeing that thing coming out of a massive smoke cloud in a 3rd rate trade SOTL

The Sovereign was not fast, and did not have long range, but if you ever got too close, *BOOM!*
Oh yeah, the infamous "trade ships of the line".
I just bought an unfinished kit of this vessel - please send me the plans
