    Hi! I just had an idea for teaching parkour and stuff more effectively. You know the skill trees in games and stuff? (You have to work on certain skills in order to do stuff, and you need those unlocked in order to do even more advanced stuff)
    I think this would be an effective way to prevent beginners like me from attempting things that are too advanced. (Just an idea, might be helpful)

    functional is subjective and depends what you do, a functional movement for a parkour might not be functional to a mma fighter or powerlifer vise versa. most sport dont use that type of movement e.g doing planche or push up wont do any good to an american football quarterback , it simply cant replace a solid weight lifting move such as the bench press.
    doing pistol squat with the intention of increaseing your vertical simply cant cut it, you have to raise your absolute strength by doing heavy compound exercise such as the barbell back squat. my point here is the term "functional" is not doing hand stand pushup on a bosu ball or muscle up on a ring, its subjective and it really depends on what activity your doing, as a matter of fact even doing the movements you preach for general health is not optimal as many bodyweight exercise you included in this video is internally rotating your rotater cuff and can cause significant injury with proper warming up or joint angle.
    your a great guy at motivating people to exercise but your doing your fan a disservice by telling them incorrect information

    • @Brobofet
      @Brobofet 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      kai yan I'm not an expert on the subject but I think you're mistaken in some of the things you said.
      First when you said most sports it seems you're talking about heavy weight sports such as American football, but as far as I know there are plenty sports which benefit from body weights exercises and get better results from it, for example martial arts including mma, or soccer, or swimming, or gymnastics. And of course you also have the possibility to lift weights to get results, it all depends on your objective. If you want to gain muscles and strength faster, then go for weights, but If you want to focus more on other aspects of actletisism such as balance, flexibility, coordination and others, go for bodyweight. By functional what they're getting at is strentgh that focuses on your body range of motion and functional movements which is exactly what you need for parkour and can also apply for a lot of other disciplines. What you said about increasing your vertical jump for example , I think it's completely wrong, if you only do heavy compound exercises you won't get the max power for your jump, doing pistol squats, normal squats, box jumps, squat jumps and so on is more efficiently going to give you the power for a higher jump, if you take a weight lifter and a parkour athlete, believe me it's going to be the parkour one who's going to jump higher. The reason why is because with weights you're mostly focusing on building the muscle but not the coordination of the jump, and you are not engaging the movement and therefore is not really functional. Still I'm only talking about the jump and there are other cases in which wheights can be more beneficial. What can be the most effective is actually combining the two, both bodyweight and weights, so that you get the most of the two. The tapp brothers actually have a video in the channel where they talk about the benefits of both you should watch it so that you get a better understanding

    • @Brobofet
      @Brobofet 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      kai yan As for the things you said about rotators I have done most of these exercises before and there is no risk of injury by doing these exercises as they have zero impact and the only resistance is your own bodyweight , and they can actually help strengthen those muscles. There's more risk of getting injured by heavy lifting or falling, as the injury can develop from sudden powerful raising of the arm against resitance.

    • @kaiyan1573
      @kaiyan1573 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brobofet 1 i dont agree with you on the vertical part, the reason that the parkour athlete "might" have a high vertical advantage is due to parkour is a sport is sport specific with jumping which include similar movement like depth jump with is "plyometrics" created by doctor yuri verkhoshansky(founder of special strength training and manual for coachs and you should read it its good for you) not because of swinging your hands up or ankle flexion, that gives little influence on your capability to jump compare to wieght lifting.with that being said without a good squatting foundation you simply cant unlock your full jumping capabilities. you honestly think a guy squating 315 wouldnt jump very high? i think your wrong my friend. i understand squatting incredible numbers does NOT translate to increasing vertical jump after a certain degree. this is due to the law of accommodation and you have to add in sport specific movement e.i explosive movements such as weighted box jump or depth jump, training pistol squat for ten years wont do jack shit if theres no extra stimulus i.e increasing resistance or switching exercise.
      also just give you a hint sight on your statment stating calisthenics wont cause injury and thoracic mobility issues, just look at the top calisthenics athletes like Hannibal for king and thenx, they all have forward posture issues. why you say? well because calisthenics DOES not include external rotational work and EFFECTIVE horizontal pulling variations(dont tell me bodyweighted row is enough). this inturn lead to muscle imbalances from the posterior chain as its weaker than the anterior. this lead to muscle at the front to tighten and round your shoulders and neck. calisthenics isnt related on impact or not, it wearing your joints off in the long term, just like sitting down which is NO IMPACT but it is horrible for you lumbar spine due to extensive pressure for sitting down and also you can get hip mobility issues so your statement is incorrect. to top it off, i understand everything is sport specific(if you wanna be good at something you have to train it) but training in weights will give you a greater universal advantage than bodyweight will ever do given that its proper periodised and follows a systematic approach.

    • @kaiyan1573
      @kaiyan1573 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brobofet 1 do bodyweight squat jumps with proper forms with all the things you said for one month and compare your self doing heavy compound squat for one month. tell me which gives you the most results.
      you dont HAVE to do it but if your ever curious you can try it and thank me later (i think its going to change your mind on how to develop athleticism)

    • @Brobofet
      @Brobofet 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get what you are saying about the vertical jump but I think you misundertood me or I didn't explain myself. I never said that doing only pistol squats is going to give you enough strentgh for a powerful jump, I mentioned other bodyweights exercises that you need as well, because as you said, if there's no extra stimulus (increasing resistance or switching exercise) "it won't do jack shit". So following that same statement, doing heavy compound squat is not going to cut it either, so I don't think a guy squating 315 would jump very high, at least not just with that. And you actually said it yourself, you have to add sport specific movement. Then this statement you made: not because of swinging your hands up or ankle flexion, that gives little influence on your capability to jump compare to wieght lifting. You're excluding an element which is the very key that makes a parkour guy jump higher than weight lifter, and that's technique. Swinging the arm ups and engaging the ankles is part of that techinque, the arms gives you momentum which improves your jump and the ankles increases the range of your jump. Weight lifting will only give you the muscle not the power. But still as you said as well, it's all sport specific.
      As for the injuries with calisnethics, I stand by with what I said. First of all, you only took into consideration the exercices in this video but then never said exactly which ones can cause issues to the rotators cuffs and why. I did some researches on the subject as I never really heard from it and found that the main reaons for injury can either be from taking impact by trying to cushion from falling for example or by sudden powerful raising of the arm against resitance, such as in powerlifting, and none of these exercices have any of that. And also searched about calistnethics causing injury and thoracic mobility issues and found nothing that proofs your point. The only way they could provoke injury is by applying bad form and technique. In fact calistnethics have been proven to have less risk of injury in comparison to using weights. So just beacause they do not include external rotational work it means that they provoke injury, in fact the external rotational exercices are mostly used after injury as a mean to recover and also to strengthen those muscles as to avoid having issues.
      Training in weights will not give you a greater universal advantage than bodyweight. That's simply because of the gains of athleticism it has. Athleticism is defined by 5 main biomotor abilities, which are as follow (take in mind that each one has different components): Strength, the ability to produce force (lifting heavy weights)
      Speed, the ability to move very rapidly (sprinting)
      Endurance, the ability to resist fatigue (running a marathon)
      Flexibility, The ability to attain large ranges of motion at the joints (doing a split)
      Coordination, the ability to move the body in order to accomplish a task (completing a technical lift)
      Believe me, lifting weights is not going to give you all of these. With weights you can deveolp mainly strength, still not to it's fullest, and some coordination, a little flexibilty and speed. So lifting weights can improve athletic performance, mainly strength, but it's not enough and stil lacks in the other abilities. By doing bodyweight exercices you can develop more flexibility, more endurance, more coordination, speed and strength. Of course not all of them at the same level, so you can gain more strength by using weights and as well gain more flexibility and coordination by doing bodyweight.
      So it all depends on your objectives, and also depending on if you're using them correctly you can get great results from both.
