    • @liamrivers3283
      @liamrivers3283 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      That wasn’t exactly it. Pepsi had a campaign called Pepsi Points. You could get Pepsi points from buying marked Pepsi products. You could also just buy Pepsi points for 10 cents each.
      They had an TV commercial where it shows off stuff you can buy with Pepsi points, and how many points it costs. They showed a kid wearing a T-shirt for 75 Pepsi points, and sunglasses for 175 . In the end, the kid flies a AV-8 Harrier Fighter Jet to school. At the end, it says the Harrier is worth 7 million Pepsi points. That equates to $700,000, and the Jet was valued at $24 million.
      The guy saw this, and wrote a $700,000 check to Pepsi asking to buy the points and the Jet.

    • @Airton2
      @Airton2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    • @invalid_user_handle
      @invalid_user_handle 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@Airton2 The change to the number of points happened after the legal battle that followed the guy asking them for the jet, which eventually was settled in Pepsi's favor because they argued that the showing of the jet was made in hyperbole and wasn't to be taken seriously. To prevent anyone else from trying the same stunt, they made it into 700,000,000 points instead.
      And fun fact, as was brought up in the legal case, in order for it to be sold to a civilian it would have to be demilitarized, which would mean (obviously) to remove all of it's weapon capabilities, but also it's ability to fly; the main reason you'd own a jet in the first place.

      The majority of the money that airlines make is from the first class tickets, not the economy. Since there’s a limited amount of first class tickets, they may be losing money by having thousands of flights go without a first class seat. Think of it basically like every time someone uses this pass, the number of first class seats on the plane is subtracted by 1. This can make a big dent in a company already struggling to make money.

    • @RedwaterPublishing

    Their mistake was not that they sold those passes but that they calculated it wrong. They assumed the price based on how people travel on average. However, the mistake is, not considering the fact that average people won't be buying such a pass, only those who travel a lot would so they set the price way too low.
    And another note, travelling too much by plane isn't good for your health because of increased radiation levels higher in the atmosphere.

    Can someone help me understand how they calculated the “costs” to the airline in the video? I would think that it would be way lower than the video implied, considering the flights would have happened either way, and the only cost would be lost revenue if the passenger takes a seat from someone that was going to book but now couldn’t because the plane was filled. But how likely is that? I’d say only about 20% of flights I’ve personally been on (pre covid) have had a full first class.

      Business travelers represent most of the revenue in a plane. Over 50% usually. So for every business class seat that is taken, they are losing thousands of dollars that they could have gotten from business travelers. Also your experience is not representative of the majority of flights. It depends a lot of the time of the year. If you’re traveling in common vacation periods, you might see less business people filling up first class, as they are not traveling as often. There definitely are a bunch of videos about this. If you read financial statements of some big airline you can also learn more about it.

    • @TheSilverwing999

    • @watsisbuttndo829

Whats the problem?

    In today’s world, driving to the airport, going through security, waiting to board, landing then paying for an Uber, driving to a deli to order a sandwich, then doing everything in reverse just seems like you want a story to tell someone that you did once. Logistically, I couldn’t see myself doing this regularly.
    If it costs $2305 to fly first class to Hawaii and it cost me $1.2 million for the pass, I’d have to fly there every week for 10 years to break even.

If it wasn't tied to use by the person named on the card, then surely it wouldn't matter what name was on it; indeed, if it was valid for anyone the owner should choose, why would it need to have a name on it at all? This somewhat overstates the cost of these passes to American. The basic cost to the airline is the price of tickets for flights the pass holder •would• have taken anyhow, even if he had not held a prepaid pass, and for which he would have bought tickets ad hoc, as he needed to travel (wherever).
    As for all the •extra• flying the pass holder does, those are flights the airline had scheduled anyhow, so it’s not like American is having to charter a flight for him alone. The cost to the airline turns, instead, on the question of whether first class was booked full on a particular flight: did seating the pass holder mean the airline couldn’t put a (newly) paying passenger in a seat on that flight? Sometimes yes, of course. But first class isn’t always booked full.
    So, if a pass holder’s presence on a flight isn’t keeping another passenger off the plane, and this is not a flight the holder would have taken without the pass, then the marginal cost to airline is much less than the price of a first class ticket. The added weight of that passenger and his baggage requires the plane to use a little more fuel. He eats some food and drinks some wine. But those costs alone are inconsequential for an airline the size of American.
    Bear in mind, too, that the money the holders paid up front for the lifetime pass isn’t the airline’s complete compensation for the service (the flights) it will render. It may take decades for a holder to go on enough flights to recover the face-value cost of the pass. But the airline has all that money as soon as the purchase is made. That means the airline gets the use of that money for a long time before the holder’s demand for flights will approach the value of what he paid. If the airline has been smart in how it used that money, and invested it, it will have increased the value it realized from that cash infusion well beyond the cost of the services it ultimately rendered to the holder.
