There was another promotion like this in the UK about 15 years ago. This was "book a cruise for £10" promoted by the Daily Express newspaper.Of course the real price of this cruise would have been several hundred pounds, but the thinking behind this promotion was that the person taking up this offer would also book a second cruise for a partner. This would be at full price and the travel company should have made a small profit. Unfortunately many people just booked the £10 cruise with no second ticket. The travel company went bankrupt and the newspaper had to compensate over 2.500 readers
Those first analogies got to me especially as someone who has lived both in UK and usa. ‘Hoovering’ is more akin to calling bandages ‘band-aids’ and kitchen storage containers’Tupperware’ than cookies being called another generic name and same as ‘potato fries’ as they are called here in Japan.
Something very similar to this actually happened again in Italy in April 2019. The electronics company "Unieuro" gave out a free flight to anywhere in Europe as long as you spent more than 300 euros. At first it seemed to work, but around Easter they just stopped paying for the flights just day before they departed, which forced many people to pay thousands of euros on flights because it was holiday season.
It's funny because Americans are usually the ones that like to call products based off their brand names. They say Kleenex instead of tissues, Jell-O instead of jelly, Jacuzzi instead of hot tubs, ChapStick instead of lip balm, Queue Tips instead of cotton buds, Rollerblades instead of inline skates, Band-Aids instead of plasters and loads of others. Only ones I'm aware of in the UK are hoovers and sellotape (and Tipp-Ex but that's such a niche rare word.) Oh and Sellotape has a brand name equivalent used there too, Scotch tape, used in the same way. So hoovers are really the only ones I can think of that are unique.
