If you say the skis on that level are basically equal you can certainly say the top riders are pretty equal also. You have to have quality reliable equipment and as he stated, the Ultra platform is built for rough water endurance.
Agree ALL riders are not equal. I said the TOP riders are pretty equal. So sometimes it's a matter of the machine. Last place? Never would expect a TOP rider to land in last place without an equipment failure. So the equipment matters quite a bit. Especially in an endurance race. Back in the late 90s early 2000s MacClugage, Motzouris, Farthing and Rius were the top riders. Mac arguably the best. He was winning with ZXIs and Ultra 150s but when he switched to the 1100 STX he was far better. But when Kawi made the STXR he was almost unbeatable. He struggled with the SXi Pro until Kawi got it dialed in. Then he rolled. Then he rolled even more with the 800 SXR. Pretty much splitting hairs. I never said all riders are equal though. Just the top ones are pretty equal.
Rider is bigger part then equipment but equipment is what hones the edge. I’m not an experienced rider but I have been woodworking as a hobby for last 15 years and let me tell you I can do as good of job with cheap bench chisel or a hand plane but with quality one I can achieve the same results faster. I leave possibility of my comparison to be found e-relevant.
