      Right, specifically horizontalism

    • @andresmorera6426
      @andresmorera6426 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mononymouslyjan8313 agreed. Though my question is: Does horizontalism necessarily mean leaderless? It is my belief that you can have leaders in flat hierarchies. Leading, either by an individual or a group, doesn't necessarily mean that a leader or leading group has inequitable power over others, at least not if there are mechanisms in place for recall (and mechanisms for the defense of those mechanisms). My understanding of this episode is that lack of this kind of leadership was the weakness of many of the pro-democratic movements that were the subject of this episode.

    • @blackdog9698919

      @@andresmorera6426 The reason these movements in America keep failing is because the FBI and CIA use murder and imprisonment to disrupt them, and the two parties absorb all the energy left over and dissipate it in a way that doesn't threaten the state. I think Vincent gets a little too hung up on blaming the victims when it comes to this topic.

    • @dogchaser520
      @dogchaser520 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@andresmorera6426 You can have people who take on more responsibility, or who have more interest, time or energy to pour into it. We shouldn't oppose that. We just need to oppose those people having undue sway, becoming enshrined, etc.

    • @blackdog9698919
      @blackdog9698919 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@achmeineye They're probably saying that vanguard parties (like the Marxist-Leninist model, such as the Bolsheviks) who successfully seize power inevitably become a new ruling class: corrupt and oppressive. Which I'd agree with, yeah. If you take over the oppressive state apparatus instead of dismantling it, it's inevitable that you're going to reproduce the exact same outcomes as the bourgeoisie who ran it before you, even if your ideology is theoretically nicer.
      My take is anarchism is better than statism.

    The most imperialist country in the world is Russia, but the far left cannot oppose it because Putin is anti-western, and that is all that matters to them. Most people think that climate change won’t bring a radical reordering of society - “we’re just going to build some solar panels and electric cars and stuff,”. There doesn’t seem much mileage in shouting about neo-liberalism these days, either.
    In these circumstances, the Palestinian cause offers a way out of end-of-history ennui. Israel could be described as a colonial state, albeit one founded by refugees fleeing fascism. The struggle against it appeared to fit a classic pattern.
    By supporting Hamas, the far left could draw a dividing between itself and the rest of the US progressive movement. A useful tactic because, if you are running a political or religious sect, you need your members to believe in something that most people will regard as insane: like supporting the mass murder of Israeli teenagers, hailing your church’s leader as God’s chosen, or insisting that Joe Biden stole the election from Donald Trump. Sect members not only prove their loyalty to their leaders, they cut themselves off from friends, family and acquaintances, who in normal circumstances might moderate their thinking and point out that, you know, not all cultures are equal and Hamas is in fact pretty much a death cult.
    If you want to support the Palestinian cause, you have to accept at some level that the most dynamic anti-Zionist force is Hamas (not one of the dying secular and socialist parties), and work out how to deal with that uncomfortable fact.

      @davidbates3057 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Lol? Russia, or Putin, as it's already laughable that you compare an entire country's will to that of it's leader alone, is imperialist, sure. But the most in the world? Are you seriously claiming that Russia, the core of the Soviet Union that, only 30 years ago, literally conceded all its puppet states and broke apart into individual countries as being the "most imperialist" state in the world?
      Not the US, that's been influencing policy in most of the middle east and southern states for coming up to a century or more, has military bases across most of the world, and has much of the European nations cucked to its own foreign policy?
      Or Israel, a subsidiary of said US, that's literally been waging a 50 year colonial operation to purge the original occupants of the land the US settled them on in order to claim it as their own?
      To echo X_TheHuntsman_X, "Thems some real brainworm thoughts" right there.

    • @freealter
      @freealter ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Progressives supporting genocide is nothing new. Russian imperialism is bad, but American imperialism is arguably the leading force of imperialist world powers or at least always fighting to be that. That’s how imperialism works, it’s a patchwork of overlapping claims to states and nations and outright conquest through regime change.
      Edit: also Israel chose Hamas. They figured they’d get more sympathy for fighting them as the main form of Palestinian resistance rather than the secular and socialist PLO/PLFP
