Thanks. There is a story that the owner seeded gold into the mine for the surveys in 1906, then ran off with the investors' money, so maybe there was never any gold there? I know for a fact there is lots of iron and pyrite though!
There's lots of iron around, so that might be a good sign. I think there is not much gold in the Forest of Dean area, but maybe a little bit if you dig down deeper than I did. It's a sedimentary rock area (mainly limestone). One prospector (One Man and His Pan) found gold in Birmingham, which he thinks was glacial deposits from Wales, so maybe the same thing is happening here.
