  • Great song by Bill Withers.
I'm trying to capture the mood and tempo of the original. This is a split keyboard with a Electric Piano 1 (Deep Timbre) with added flange, delay, rotary speaker and stage reverb. This is a little too much effect, muddling the melody occasionally where the muddling wasn't helpful, but it helped blend in the sound better with the Fender Jazz Finger Preamp Bass.
This is from one take where at one point I cut out a section towards the end to shorten. I've improved considerably at soloing since my previous recording of this song and was able to solo at this faster tempo over longer sections. Most helpful was taking some time to learn the rhythm of the bass, drums, keys and melody and be able to duplicate these in at least two voices, left and right hand. Still, there is one point (~2:07) where I tried to insert a tritone substitution to G in the left hand and ended up half a beat behind in the bass in the left hand for around two measures.
The beginning verse, besides having the base and melody part also has some of the intro keyboard part featured down two octaves, especially a chromatic ascending and descending line (Eb up to Gb and down) as well as an ostinato (C-Db) rhythm that drive the song forward and makes the resulting chords more interesting. I have to split the ostinato part between left and right hands, which makes the verse more tricky to play.

Thanks! It was fun trying something with the EP sounds, and I was surprised I could get this nice blend!

Great cover! 2:02 is a sick run, really well done. Question: I do covers on my channel as well, but when I record on my phone I get a bit too much of the clicking sound from the keyboard and it doesn't come through very clean. How do you record these covers? Thanks so much.

Thanks! Great question! Yeah, the video has lots of key clicks and sighs, etc. I do audio and video separately. I have the audio on the video track to help synch that track with the separately acquired audio in video postproduction, for which I use Resolve. I used to acquire audio on a separate digital recorder (Sony, ~$70), but last year I realized I could connect directly into the audio on my desktop (or laptop) and record directly into Audacity. This works awesomely. I did have to make buy some cable adapters to get from left and right 1/4" output of Nord to ~1/8" (3.5mm) stereo input to the computer sound card. I also had to double check that I was getting actual stereo (left minus right channels is nonzero), because I think Audacity duplicated one of the channels from the other when one wasn't coming through. BTW, I'm using an ancient digital video cam mounted to my ceiling to capture the video. It has a mic input, so that might be been another route for me to try...

I listened to your cover--nice extended chords! If you do direct audio into a recording device, it will not only help with clicks, but the sound quality will be better too. One other thought is that either the phone or the piano is shaking a bit during the recording--any way to stabilze? I had this problem when I tried to record my grand piano from above, when I used a big tripod. Problem solved by making mount to ceiling or high on a wall. And my keyboard is sitting on a built-in desk, so it is rock solid.

@@TobiasonPiano thanks for listening man!! As far as direct audio into a recording device goes, do you use an audio interface? How's that setup look? I think my issue is sound quality rather than stability.
I've tried using an external mic and I got this muffled distorted sound. Then I tried hooking up an audio patch cable from my keyboard directly to my phone with a few adapters and I got that same distorted sound.
Appreciate your advice on this :) been struggling to resolve my setup issue and get quality sound.

Ah, I didn't see your second reply; checking it out now.

@superpianoman13 One other thing: after I synch the audio and video I either mute or completely turn down the volume on the video instead of combine. Then there are absolutely no ambient sounds in the recording. Some video production SW didn't like just muting, but Resolve works with muting the audio track in the video. (Your last recording had ambient sounds, so the mic on your phone is still getting into the audio mix at least at that time.) (BTW, I'll agree it is a much smaller issue, but I can see your keyboard moving around ~1/16" in the video, for some people it might not matter, but especially those trying to see what you are doing with your fingers it makes it harder. It's moving when you press down, so I'm guessing it's on an X stand or something similar.)
