The Gun Devil is immediately set up as such an intimidating presence. Learning that it killed *millions* in a matter of minutes was scary enough, but seeing the way Aki's house was destroyed and his family killed was absolutely terrifying.

JJK focuses more on the fighting aspect and the cursed techniques are mostly straightforward, or at the very least partly explained. The devils in Chainsaw Man work in a way that is pretty impossible to predict and therefore it's also pretty impossible to predict the outcomes of the fights. Who would think the Mold Devil can plant mold inside the body and kill a person from the inside, or that Doll can do what it did? From what we've seen, Mold could maybe unironically kill Gojo since it can easily pass Infinity and plant itself inside him before he even has a chance to react, and you'd never expect mold to be so powerful. And we haven't even really fully grasped the powers of the heavy hitters. I don't even have to mention Darkness, Gun, Falling or Control and we don't even know what Fami can really do. We haven't even met all of the Primals, and Death's arrival is going to be an absolutely catastrophic event.

But if you don't know Asa and Yoru's whole situation this explanation might be even more confusing.

One thing I love about Chainsaw Man is how comfortable it is with being uncomfortable. It's easy to imagine a version of the story with all the edges smoothed out - Denji's big horny mitigated via implication, Makima's abuse left more for imagination, Himeno's coping mechanisms played only for laughs, Power doesn't reek etc. It's equally easy to imagine everything being so exaggerated and stylized it doesn't read as "real" any more, like a cut to chibi Denji nose-bleeding all over the place when he sees Makima or her manipulation being super over the top villainous. But Fujimoto isn't interested in any of that, instead he's digging for some kind of raw humanity that is both familiar and repulsive, admirable and pathetic
I was always fascinated at the fact that Makima gave Denji a glimpse of what he wanted and set a goal for him, and then as soon as she has Denji interested, she immediately takes what she has given him and starts talking about what she wants from Denji, which is for him to defeat the Gun Devil. It says so much about Makima without explicitly saying anything.
It's how you train dogs to be entirely complicit. She doesn't punish him, only dangle the next reward. It isn't loyalty, it's blind devotion to a superior
I really like how Power and Denji revert to their sibling dynamic without ever bringing up their awkward moments in the beginning. I was beginning to think that this show was just gonna be another harem-situation, but thank god that's not the case. Usually, the world is bending over backwards for the male MC, but here it's almost like he has to constantly face reality when it seems like his "dreams" are becoming true (-> "The Taste of a Kiss").

See you back here in 6 hours” and didn’t even notice I was in time square until I looked up. Just seemed like an irregular street area before looking up at the famous signage

I mean it's good to figure it out early. That is one of the least 'scene' there is, so if that dissuades you, good. Everything only gets darker, more violent, and is "torture porn" (not literally) made by a an author who i can only describe as a madman lol. But that's what makes it unique.
