Spent some quality time with the African Wild Cat at Cheetah Experience when volunteering. I honestly thought these kittens were someone's house cat that gave birth and for sale. They acted and looked exactly like a common domesticated house cat. They played, purred, showed affection, got scared, growled, and kneaded like a common house cat. And that is because I believe much of the gentic link to the domesticated house cat came from these guys. The only time I saw the 'WILD" in them was during feeding. Hunger and feeding is a strong natural force for a wild animal. These Africa Wild Cats were no different.
Wild cats are normally larger than your average house cat as well. They can also be identified by the orange striped bands that loop around their necks and chest.
I always find kneading behavior fascinating as well as the 'chatter' call cats make. The primary purpose of the kneading ritual is to stimulate and move milk from the mammary glands of the mother. The motion stimulates it. Then the cats suckle the teat for milk. These kittens are beyond milk or suckling, but as they were taken from their mother early, they never lose the habit. Adult Cheetahs suckle even.
The chatter noises are interesting. I've not seen it but from domesticated cats before. Not many do it. It was interesting to catch these African Wild Cats doing it and the fact all of them did. It is very instinctive and has a purpose. Most think it is to mimic their prey, like birds to get them to come closer so they can catch them. I can believe that theory. It definitely has a purpose.

House Cats share 96% DNA with their cousin the Tiger and 95% DNA with their cousin the Lion! Like the Big Cat Society says, there are Big Cats and Small Cats! But, that they are ALL Cats! They don't separate them!
If one ends up in a shelter, people will adopt them without ever knowing that they're actually wild.

fr. i have 4 and occasionally 6 if the strays feel like visiting, and they all go insane like this.
my cat always eat like 6 or 8 times a day
I have a grey tabby, and he have access to dry food most of the day. He is fed wet food twice a day. That is what my vet recommends, but I think the cat food companies is in vets pockets….He don’t eat more than he need. He looks a lot like the African wildcat, so I ordered a DNA cat test.

Dude, kittens are basically spiders, they will try and scale anything. For a period of time while fostering a litter I wouldn't dare to go into our bedroom without jeans and socks on because they will climb you like a tree.

Wow, with respect to this video, I must say that cats have not changed, they are not domesticated, they just adapted to living with humans. Cats are still wild. But I love them so much.

House cats retain the characteristics of wild kittens more, whereas adult wild cats are more aggressive.

I've owned cats since I was a very young girl, but I'd never heard/seen a cat "chatter" until I was about 25. It scared me! I thought the cat was having a seizure. So I took it to the vet, who told me, when I explained the behavior, that this was completely normal and not to worry. 😁💗🐈💗

I like how even the domestication of cats vs dogs is very in character for them. We have all these obedient and wildly different breeds of dog as if they happily and obediently allowed themselves to be changed so much for their human companions to fit whatever need was expected of them, meanwhile cats barely changed at all from their wild counterpart, as if they were like "Bitch, we are already perfect, we don't gotta change a god-damn thing if we don't wanna"

If your criterion for "wild" is how they behave at feeding time, I'd have to say I've been mistaken all along and what I have living in my house are actually wild cats.....

This! I've seen kittens do this. It's a kitten thing. Domesticated cats eventually just get trained to not react like that to food, and tbh, it's human-specific. A change in humans can still get that reaction to come out if they've been abused, or just testing boundaries.

Dogs are so far domesticated... But Cats never - they may semi-demesticated themselfs and adepted to us humans - but not in the way Dogs where. So Dogs are not like Wolfs - but Cats are actually pretty close to Wild or Big Cats
cats domesticated themselves, humans never did ,because people didn't use to have pets just because they were cute, its only a recent trend. they just kinda started living in cities with humans because there were a lot of rats around humans and humans accepted them because of that. your cat still thinks that he just hangs around you for food but you don't own him, only occasionally he show appreciation when he feels like it. that's why people say cats don't care like dogs do ,which is true

They are related to domestic cats. The Abyssinian and Somali breeds, especially.
These wildcats share the same ancestor with our domesticated cats. Back in the day, these wildcats can be found in "Fertile Crescent" - a place where humans learned to farm. The farms attracted a lot of rodents. Humans don't like these pests around them feeding on their grains. Some wildcats are drawn to these rodents and the humans are fine with it. Until such time those brave wildcats lived near the farms, and sometimes probably scavenging from the scraps of leftovers from humans. Time after time, the two species became closer and closer. Until humans kept them in their farms. The cats in our homes today are the descendants of those wildcats that chose to risk everything.

Is Abyssinian cat similar to a different subspecies of wild cat that got domesticated and eventually bred with these proto Tabby cats?
some of the cats seem to know that we enjoy them to kill small animals,they bring the killed animal to us or into a house and drop it in front of the human and meow or yowl loudly. Unfortunately they can kill birds.
I think these African cats are a bit larger and play a bit rougher than standard pet cats.
Siamese cats don't usually seem to behave as affectionately as some other cats.

These wild cats may have some domesticated genes in them as well. They came from a breeder and rescued. The pedigree of them is unknown. They should be even bigger :)

I'll try. Glad you liked the Africa Wild Cats. I never knew they existed until meeting them. I'll see what I have on them, but it may take some time as I have some other videos I have scheduled to release before. One of them WILL include some of the wild cats. It's a test of the 'reflex' response when scratching the back end of cats. I include wild cats in my test, as well as cheetahs, servals, and caracals... and YES even lions. Ok, cub lions but they're still lions.

sorry to say but they are not so much bigger as u think nearly the same size or just a little bit bigger i have pure wild Felis silvestris lybica female and in size she is same as a normal Egyptian mau or feral cat and sure it's pure wild caz we got her from the desert as we are in Egypt and they are roaming alot in our deserts and sometimes coming to villages to steal birds from farmers we got her when she was a kitten and she still has wild & aggressive behavior but improving by time

Fun fact, house cats are not actually domesticated, they just hang out with us for company and food. They're literally just wild animals we keep in our homes (because they're cute and we love them)
And because they're small and sleep for almost the entire day and understanding their needs, they're easy to tame.

Once outside a house, domestic cats are wild animals. They return to our houses so that they can get some safety from dangerous predators like dogs, raptor birds, and each other. One cat that I had used our suburban shrubbery as a blind for catching unwary birds. I have never seen any cat behavior other than the social hunting of lions or the extreme chase speeds of cheetahs. The similarities between mini-tigers and tigers are obvious.

My cat looks exactly like those cats (including the orange fur on the ears and nose), and he acts like how they do at feeding time whenever I give him treats or wet food. I would not be surprised if he was actually a wild cat.
House cats came from the African Wild Cat but these probably have some inbreeding hybrid house cat in them. Wild cats are usually much larger and distinct that this.

Samuel Wright I believe it. Even before actual felines evolved, there have been several cat like predators that evolved independently of each other. Research and genetic testing has shown that they are not related to modern cats.
The domesticated housecats that we keep all descend from African Wild Cats, hence the similar mannerisms. It's also worth noting that "domesticated cats" aren't really that domesticated, humans interacted with and bred wildcats just like these ones.
@Tjokkaflens it is alsp noted that dogs are the first animals to be domesticated. Cats acts more wild because they are more independent and they could attack the owner no matter how you trained them.

One of my cats (that looks like these) goes absolutely wild at feeding time, jumping up and down on the sink and tries to climb me like a tree. And they all start meowing incessantly until they're fed.
Yup, when my moms kitty was about 6 months, she would climb up my mothers leg at feeding time, and my little girl (we got them at the same time) , would always scream(she was a tortie and that squeaky meow would sound like a literal scream at the top of her lungs) with excitement and run just ahead of me. I'm lucky she never tripped me cause she would stop and look back to make sure I was in fact bringing her her food. lol.

It's funny how your every day, no-breed housecat bears the closest resemblence to their ancient ancestor. I don't really get the desire of people to want expensive special breeds that look weird and often have all kinds of different inbred diseases.

Bengals are a crossbreed between housecats and Asian Leopard Cats. ALCs are the same size as housecats, but look a bit different, because they are a separate species. African Wildcats are the SAME species as housecats, though they are classified as separate subspecies. Really, there is a lot more genetic difference between a Chinaman and an Englishman than between a housecat and an African Wild cat.
Crusader1815 No one argues all humans are the same, just that the differences are so little they aren't worth all that much. All humans can interbreed, and the genetic difference between individuals is larger than the genetic differences between groups. So while one group may be on average taller than the other, if you take two individuals from both groups there's a large chance they don't follow these expectations. For example there are plenty of short ethnically Dutch people, the country with supposedly the tallest population (which also may have to do with a heavy dairy based diet). Tabby cats in a nutshell. The only real difference is that house cats can be kinder in general but that is not always the case either. My own ginger tabby cat is the sweetest thing but his energy levels and hunting prowess can easily compete with these wild cats, he even has back legs longer than front and his body is abnormally long.

I think I have one of these. She looks exactly like these wild cats. Her hind legs are longer than her forelegs, she's ferociously territorial - way more so than any other cat I've ever had, she does that chattering thing when she sees birds and squirrels, she can jump vertically to an unbelievable height. I've always thought she was somehow different from other domestic cats I've had. I don't know how I would have ended up with one of these, but she really is just like one of these wildcats.

They def seem a bit more aggressive than the typical house cat. I can see the difference. It's so interesting though how similar they are, at times one wouldn't know the difference. Even while being more aggressive at feeding time they are still meowing with their tails up.
Oh yeah. Man they go crazy during feeding time. Nuts. I've not see this with regular house cats and I've come across 100 or more in my lifetime. Calm.

I have been owned by a Bengal cat, she was very intelligent, she proved that cats don't need opposable thumbs to open any door, high energy with a streak of wild in her. Experienced cat owners only, your African wild cats reminded me so much of her. I am completely hooked on your videos, I always look forward to the next one.

I have an African Wild cat that came from a shelter, has every marking and characteristic. He's just a year and 4 months and has recently fully matured. Sweetest thing ever. We raised him with lots of love and he reciprocates. He has 3 siblings that he also loves and gets along well with all of them. But you can see in his mannerisms that there are wild, undomesticated instincts in him that all the nurturing isn't going to erase. He is super dense of muscle, incredibly strong for his size and Neo level quick. Quicker than any cat I've seen or owned, he's literally a blur when he goes into attack mode. One of our kittens (another male that he is super friendly with) looks like he's going to be massive. Going to be interesting watching the social dynamics as they all grow up.

Thank you so much for this video. I have never seen this species before, and It was too much fun seeing these wild ancestors to the domestic cat. It was so enjoyable to be able share a day of kittens with you, and be so close to a rarely shown animal.

Growing up in E. Africa lots of them were in the neighbourhood and they were an or-some force. very beautiful cats and we new they were wild! unapproachable like in this video. they are also fearless!!

just get a partly bob cat mix, same size and tend to be a bit less hyper

Some people just HATE cats... it is sad. They are wonderful, extremely capable predators, affectionate, loving, personable with a heart. Only the devil could dislike them.
+Dolph C. Volker so sad to hear about Eden. I have owned two Bengal cats, one passed away due to heart failure and a bad breeder breeding bengals with heart disease. The second Bengal from a reputable breeder after the hard education from the first, still very healthy. Love your experiences, once in a lifetime with those beautiful cheetahs. Looked like Eden shared a very close bond with you.
I didn’t know African wild cats were even a thing. I lived in Zimbabwe for 6 months. I don’t think I saw one single cat that entire time! 🤷♀️ Fascinating, beautiful little creatures!!

you have to remember that these are kittens. most wild animals are tame as babies and go wild when they reach adulthood. That's what makes domestic cats different
If you maintain and consistent and repetitive positive relationship with a wild animal from start to finish, they will remain tame and consider you as family. These Wild Cats are the same as they were when kittens. Cheetah Experience even allows children to go inside their enclosure as tourists. This story is repeated with 100s of wild animal relationships worldwide. Bart the bear Utah, crocodile man in Costa Rica, Tima in Russia, Brutus the Grizzly in Montana, Lion Whisperer South Africa, Gabriel the Cheetah and me in South Africa.

For every story like that there are many more of people being mauled by their beloved "tame" pet tiger, lion, or chimpanzee. You can't use cheetahs as an example because they are well known for being one of the few large predators that is easy to tame, and even used to be used for hunting game. That is not true among almost all other wild predators and cheetahs are the exception, not the rule.
That is because they DID NOT consistently and repetitively maintain a positive, un-abusive relationship with their animals. I presented multiple predator/man relationship as examples. The wolf man at the London zoo and the bear man of northern Finland is another. There are 1000s of other people with pet predators out there with the same positive interactive formula with no incidents. The guy who killed himself in Ohio tried to feed himself to his tigers by placing meat all over his body. They did not eat him when let out of their enclosures. I don't condone or encourage the private ownership of wild animals if not necessary, just pointing out the fact that when done right, the animal has no reason to break the bond.
Domesticated and tamed are actually different. You can tame wild animals but you can't domesticate it (I mean it takes long time and thousands of generations to domesticate an animal so you can't do it yourself).
@@CheetahWhisperer Do you have any evidence that a majority of people who were mauled by wild animals mistreated them? Or are you just assuming that because it’s what you’d like to believe. It’s like saying heroin isn’t dangerous because thousands of people have done it and survived
Hi Dolph.There were quite a few watchers here:we get the kneading,purring(heaven),the alert look,the inquisitive nose around:the use of the body as a jungle gym:and I'm glad you mention the"chattering" as well.They are captivated but soon lose interest when the birds don't appreciate the undivided attention paid to them;and that cheetah got told in no uncertain terms.And you drew the lucky straw when you had so many of these incredibly beautiful cats lying happily on your stomach and legs totally content in their dreams:) Cat heaven Dolph..seeing them eat in such orderly fashion was *great*:the lady explained the reasoning patiently and very well.A fabulous clip with your super commentary:and a big thanks for putting together this cat show.It is quite a performance and it all comes naturally.that is quality for you and another unforgettable experience.`

When you want to create a new paragraph in your comment, you must hold down the SHIFT key and then hit RETURN, otherwise it jumbles all of your comments into one paragraph. It makes it easier to read. I don't know why TH-cam is like that. Maybe it's just our systems. But it is something new since last year.

One can tell a tabi from an African wild cat because of the stomach fur the tan with spots! I love mine so much she is so assume. They act really great till they want to be feed hahaha they'll climb you like a tree
