I got to meet Jeff Provine in 2015 while doing a haunted ghost tour of the University of Oklahoma. He really does his research and makes his tours fun and interesting.
My Great Grandma Was a Fred Harvey Girl... She Served my Great-Grandpa at the Fred Harvey Restaurant. These people WERE my Fathers Grandparents.. Here I am, today. My Mothers Maternal great- grandparents were S.0.Dawes and Mary Jane Dees. He was the FIRST State LIBRARIAN and Wrote part of the Oklahoma Constitution 1909. Lived in Guthrie. My Family has Deep roots in Oklahoma History!! and were part Of Guthries Population. I am a 2nd great grandson of a 1889 grandparent!
The tunnels are, in fact, there. In the late 1960's I explored one which led from Easy's Bowling Alley (an underground 2-lane, with manual pin-setters...young African American kids who made 25 cents an hours setting pins), and later, the tunnel that led from the Ione Hotel to the old statehouse (the Ione was demolished decades ago). There was access from the Guthrie Opera House, later a well known Honkey Tonk, where many country and western musicians got their start, to either a gambling hall or brothel.....I'm not clear which. The building partly collapsed in the 1970's, and was torn down. Re: ghosts, there is a glowing tombstone in the Guthrie Cemetary, reportedly a member of the Doolin Gang it (actually does glow), whose hide-out is a cave on the bluffs north east of the town. Stone Lion Inn is frequently visited by apparitions. Reportedly, there is a mystic portal of sorts under the main auditorium stage in the Masonic Temple. African American's killed at the Bloody Bucket Juke Joint south of the Temple, reportedly still roam the area seeking their killers. One could spend a lifetime in this town, alone, seeking understanding of the forces at play in Guthrie's past. Quite unusual for a small, land-run town.
I've heard ghost stories about the temple as well! In the Tales Unveiled podcast that I do, we talk about more Guthrie ghost stories if you're interested. www.talesunveiled.com/2018/10/1x07-walking-around-guthrie/
