As someone who works for TfL and closely with London Underground (LU), I can say that fare evasion is a small contributor to the current state of LU. While TfL loses a significant amount of revenue due to fare evasion, I believe the rise in fare evasion is a sign of the current economic climate; we cannot deny that the high cost of living has played a role. Station staff, as you pointed out, have no policing powers and often face assaults when attempting to stop fare evasion, we do not advise station staff to stop fare evasion especially if puts their personally safety at risk. However, they do report fare evasion via a reporting app, and this information is sent to our revenue control colleagues, who deploy inspectors accordingly, often with the support of British Transport Police. Of course, the LU network is extensive, and monitoring fare evasion remains a challenge. Nonetheless, I can say that our revenue colleagues have made significant strides in stopping repeat offenders, issuing fines, and saving revenue. I agree that the quality of LU services has declined, but this decline stems from a lack of funding and investment. The infrastructure and some trains on the network are too old to support the number of passengers we carry. Under the past Tory government, TfL was made to fund itself, resulting in a loss of government funding that has adversely affected our services, particularly since LU is so old. Many projects that would improve LU are currently on hold due to a lack of funding. Apologies for the lengthy comment.

That is a good point, but for me the question is why?
I just think we have people in political positions who don’t want the best for the country nor love the country otherwise they wouldn’t let things get this bad.
Singapore underground is fast efficient ultra modern very safe and no fare evasion (as far as i know).🇬🇧🇸🇬
@@carausiuscaesar5672 That's a very cool, I love Singapore and how well run it is.
Singapore is a different world, people follow rules. Fines can be very painful, literally. Singapore is a 'fine' city.
How can fare evaders be causing that much damage? They're a minority of the TFL customers, vast majority still pay.
The issue lies somewhere else, like mismanagement of funds, greed of higher ups, or they just need to charge more
London is buggered!
England id buggered!
@@bobmarshall3700 I really really really wish it wasn't true, but London at least is going downhill.
There is still good stuff here, creativity and so on.
Such as excellent London underground train videos 😂
You’re not painting yourself in a good picture with TfL
@@BenTaylor. That's a very good point, what do you think will happen?
What TFL don't see is that if they lower the fares to reasonable pricing then more people will pay and they will end up making more money.
@@ExploringWithOliver That's a very interesting point of view, thank you
I just want to point something out.. that will get me lynched.
Those troubled countries tend to have very right wing governments, like we have had for the past 14 years... (Well they gradually got worse).
Vote right. Get this.
why are you filming strangers?
@@class317 only criminals who are blatantly breaking the law.
The fare evaders were so cold and apathetic, they did not even care that they were being filmed.
The person was doing it from a normal mobile phone, not a hidden camera or anything.
It was really clear that they were filming and the fare evaders just didn't care.
Maybe that's also got something to do with how people are used to being filmed nowadays, social media etc.
Sadiq Khan should give them the money from what he has robbed of motorists with his ulez scam
the country is now a 3rd world country; well at least London is.
this is why I'm leaving London or the uk soon.
@@TrainPlaneFan123 where wil you go instead?
Can you tell us what paradise you are going to?
@BigA1 please can you please say more about the question and it's context?
TfL hit record revenue in 2023 at £8.6 billion, yet fare evaders are to blame? There is no opportunity cost from a fare evader, the train was going to run regardless of whether or not they jump the barrier, the only time it might affect the service is if the train is full... and there is plenty to argue the net benefit cost to the economy (one only has to look at Luxembourg).
All you did was present a think piece devoid of any facts whatsoever, simply blaming ordinary working class citizens and putting them on full blast on TH-cam calling them hardened criminals. Extremely poor taste and pretty pathetic, did you inform any of those you recorded you was going to put them on TH-cam? The Underground is NOT a public space and you do not have the right to show peoples identity and libel their character.
Ofc fare evaders are not the only problem, there's many factors like expensive tube fares, cleanliness and more. Also you mention "The Underground is NOT a public space and you do not have the right to show peoples identity and libel their character.", some areas you don't need permission to film because tfl is public I think, except for employee rooms or the tube cab.
fare evading is absolutely ghetto ☠️
You should see East Ham 😂
@@TheLondonTransportDroid is it really bad there?
Hmm just from the video it seems the majority of fare evading people represent a very specific subset of the population. But I’m sure this is not the case in reality and I am absolutely certain that these clips are not fair representation of London demographics of fare evaders. Absolutely certain. No doubt about it.
TFL IS PATHETIC WELL DONE RAISING THIS ISSUE ITS A FREE FOR ALL
ITS THE ONLY COMPANY I KNOW WERE THE SHOP KEEPER OPENS IT SHOP AND EXPECTS IT CUSTOMERS TO LEAVE THEIR MONEY ON THE COUNTER, AND THE OTHER RAIL COMPANY`S PRETTY MUCH ALSO DO THE SAME
That's a very good and clever way of explaining it.
@@LondonUndergroundTubetrains THANKS IV BEEN SAYING FOR YEARS IN FACT IM SURPRISED A MAGISTRATE HAVE NOT DISMISSED FAIR EVADERS FOR THE VERY SAME REASON THAT THE COMPANY SHOULD BE COLLECTING THE FARE PROPERLY IN THE FIRST PLACE, WITH ALL THOSE UN STAFFED STN YOUR JUST INVITING PEOPLE NOT TO PAY IN THE FIRST PLACE
@THEFORBIDDENMAN-lk7of Totally agreed.
Amazingly with every single fare evader on the video, it was a fully staffed station.
The staff are told not to get involved with fair evaders and they are not backed up, so they do their best to pretend not to notice.
THANKS AGAIN

Fair evesion barely makes a dint. TFL is in ruin thanks to Sadik. All London is in ruin.
If you were more intelligent than a fart you would know that TfL isn’t in trouble because of the London Mayor Khan; successive Tory governments since 2010 have utterly obliterated vital public services partly by under funding them. During the pandemic lockdowns London’s public transport systems had to keep operating but weren’t generating enough revenue to maintain the networks, Boris Johnson’s government refused to compensate TfL for their losses because of lockdowns. Subsequently the infrastructure is struggling.
Just like Boris was useless and livingstone caused problems before him
@@mad3m6n Your comment proves that you are utterly ignorant and infinitely less intelligent than a fart. London like the rest of the country is in ruins solely because of inaction and the policies of successive Tory governments between 2010 and 2014, they obliterated all vital public services, partly by underfunding of their infrastructure maintenance. No London Mayor has unlimited funds, Sadiq Khan being a Labour Mayor, the Tories undermined him. London’s public transport system had to be kept in service during the pandemic lockdowns, which meant that public transport networks were operating at losses, the Tories refused to compensate for these losses, thus the root-cause are the Poo-Guzzling-Tories.
Mr Ken Livingstone made London Great. So has Sadek.
@TonyWeaving according to some people *EVERY* mayor has "ruined" London
Don’t worry Labour will put it right 😂😂😂😂😂 Not!
What's weirder si you going out of your way to record random strangers in public fare dodging. Nobody likes a grass you weapon
You think fare dodging is a good thing? If so I might try it without any "consequences" LOL
Lol how tf is he a grass, are you getting high off your own supply mr spliff? All he did was film a ticket gate.. hardly an informant is he 😂
If people are brazen enough to do this shit so blatantly while taking the paying public and the staff for mugs, then they deserve to have their dumb mugs all over youtube.
Public transport should be free. 😊
You are focusing on the wrong thing.
who pays for it then
@ Luxembourg
@@mathewcnlau it's a good point, where do you think the money should come from?
@@LondonUndergroundTubetrains paid by tax payers!
@@mathewcnlau Fair enough, I didn't expect that answer.
What kind of gb news video is this? I assume because you think it is such a big problem you have statistics to show the revenue lost? And prove how much money is being lost rather than your opinion. Which for the matter i think is grossly over estimating this problem. This just seems like your making this a fanciful issue to be the root cause of all tfl’s fundings problems which have much more to do with inflation and a flatlining economy than fare evaders.
They lose hundreds of millions. Plenty of data on this. Seems like you would rather put your fingers in your ears and cover your eyes.
