Close your eyes and focus only on his vocal performance; it's unique. Only he could imbue a lazy "bedhead" voice with layers of goofiness, intelligence, sarcasm and warmth, and be that charming.

In one episode of Rhoda, Carlton helped move a mattress, carrying it on his shoulder so his head isn't seen. After he's out of the apartment he's tips his hat...and only his arm holding his hat comes through the doorway. In another episode Carlton wears a full over-the-head Halloween mask at a Halloween dance.
Kind of cool to finally see his face, he didn't do a lot of interviews. I always loved his voice, it was perfect for Garfield. I think of H. Jon Benjamin as the Lorenzo Music of today... Not a lot of range but he has the perfect personality for his characters.
