Great video to the point, this is much easier to share then explaining every time. Even when people read the manual they miss understand this. Thanks and 73 DE KK4MND
I bought mine soon after passing my foundation a few years ago. I would never part with it now, such a wonderful little radio. Especially paired with the wind camp battery kit, probably one of the best upgrades you can give the 817.
I’ve since sold on the FT-817. However I do remember on battery power it didn’t do anymore than 3.5/4 watts fully charged and more than likely was doing far less as the voltage dropped.
If you can use external power rather than a built in battery you will certainly have more luck. I found using the built in battery I was only pushing out 2.5-3 watts.
I gave the battery pack away from new to a friend when I got it. Never bothered but using the Windcamp battery kit I’ve had it running most of an afternoon with regular contacts and transmitting but I’ve never really took notice of how long to be honest.
One should be aware that the FT-817 is limited to 1.5 watts in the AM mode. The indicator still works the same but High is 1.5, and Low is 0.5 of a watt...
Not even a year ago you just passed 100 subs, now you're on 500! Great start to the new year chap!
Thank you Jake, appreciate it mate. All the best for the new year 👍🏻
Excellent. Demystifying a wacky way of expressing power output. Thanks
500 subs well done mate! Nice video 73
Thank you Tim, much appreciated. 73 mate.

Many thanks, 73 stay safe de M7MMC
Thanks for this. I was confused about this as well.
Very good explanation. The power setting are indeed confusing on the FT-817/nd. 73 OM!
Yes it was very helpful. Thank you!
Excellent and easy to understand explanation of how to set transmit power. The manual does not do a good job to describe this function.
thanks Great job 73 from kb2uew
Cheers Mike
I currently using a ft 70D as I'm new to Ham radio but seriously thinking about one of these, when they're in stock

Did you measure the power output at 11 volts with the power setting blinking like you described?
I’ve since sold on the FT-817. However I do remember on battery power it didn’t do anymore than 3.5/4 watts fully charged and more than likely was doing far less as the voltage dropped.
But what does it when the L3 is blinking while on external power and the radio is set to full power?
Thx Mike - is this equally valid when on the 2mtr band?
I believe so, yes.
I ashamed to admit but I have trouble when I do read the manual !
Much nicer to read and watch a demonstration !

Thx,wondered how to reduce power!
Very useful. Manual is very confusing in this regard. Had not much contacts on portable QRP. maybe I know the reason now. 73 de DD1TA

How long have you had it lasting on full power on HF SSB on its internal batts roughly Mike?
I gave the battery pack away from new to a friend when I got it. Never bothered but using the Windcamp battery kit I’ve had it running most of an afternoon with regular contacts and transmitting but I’ve never really took notice of how long to be honest.
Thank you Just got a 818 G4JDC
Great little radios indeed! Many thanks 73.
Mike, that was useful. Now where is my magnifying glass !! 73 Chris G3XVL/P
How’s that wonderloop? Do you mind maybe making a review on it?
Done a little review and demonstration which is online now, it's the latest video :) 73'
Tnx 73
btw. with powerplug connected, without external powersource, you will get full power with internal batteries
What is an interesting stuff on BNC socket?
It's a cover :)
