    After I dusted off my FT-817 I searched for a quick video on charging the thing. Then you showed up in a T-shirt of my favorite band Genesis. Tnx...73, Bas PE4BAS

      I'm glad that my video was of use. I've been a Genesis fan since I was 12 years old when I got the Duke album. I've seen them live in 1987 on the Invisible Touch tour, then Phil Collins live in Paris, France in 1990 for the But Seriously tour, Genesis live in 1992 for the We Can't Dance tour and then Genesis earlier this year for the Last Domino tour.
      Hope to work you on the bands soon and enjoy the 817. 73 Chris M0RSF

    Hi Chris, since the recent news that Yaesu are to discontinue the 817/8 I have taken my 817 out of its bag and given it a bit of a dust down. I have been going portable for about 4 years now and 2 years ago I moved over to the 857. Although a little more power hungry, with the advent of lifepo4, batteries have become more efficient and power consumption on my 10w is not too bad. I tend to use the battery tray with LADDA 2450mAh rechargeable s when I don't have my usual power source but still charge them through the radio using the Green wire mod. Thank you so much for your sterling efforts when out /p and who knows, one day I might just get you in the log.... M6KVK 73

      Sad news indeed that the Yaesu FT817/818 are to be discontinued. I doubt there will ever be a transceiver as popular. I have used a Yaesu FT857 for a Special Event Station some time ago and I was very impressed with it. Excellent news that you have been getting out portable. That's where I do most of my operating and I don't operate from home much though I really should make the effort to. I plan to do more HF portable this year though I will always do 2m FM. Thanks for watching and it would be great to have a QSO with you one day. All the best for 2023. 73 Chris M0RSF

    I find the internal battery quite handy for a quick check of a portable antenna testing or tune up in my yard. This reminds me to put mine on charge for a while thanks.

    While it may seem an inconvenience, most of the time you don’t want to be charging while using external power, so the manual selection makes perfect sense. Only charge when needed. Thanks! Nice video. Love my 818, would buy another if it sauced.

      I mostly use the PSU I have to run the radio for charging though I have used the supplied charger on the odd occasion such as on holiday. I've owned an 817 since 2006 and it is without doubt my favourite radio. Sadly my 817 has developed a fault on 2m and I'm waiting to hear from Yaesu UK. If it's an expensive repair I will be buying an 818. Thanks for watching and enjoy the radio. 73 Chris M0RSF

    Thanks for the charging tip. I'm new to the Yaesu ft 817. I can send and receive now that I've programmed it, but I've been told that my mic level is too low. How do you adjust this so I don't have to yell in the mic?

    • @M0RSF
      @M0RSF  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello and excellent news that you have the Yaesu FT817. If you go into the Menu and set the FM mic gain at 50 and SSB mic gain at 85 it should work fine. I've owned an 817 since 2006 and I've used these settings for years with no problems. Let me know how you get on. 73 Chris M0RSF

    Hi Chris could you please give me some advice,when you use external batteries ,can you leave the internal batteries in the Yaesu? Thanks Tim

    • @M0RSF
      @M0RSF  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Tim, the only time that I install the internal battery into my 817 is to charge it and go do some portable operating. A soon as I'm home I remove the internal battery. I believe that leaving the internal battery in the 817 results in a small current running through the radio that can damage the finals resulting in an expensive repair. Hope that helps. 73

    I have to remove the battery before storing my 817nd... However with the FT818... there is no drain, so the battery will not need charging. Although, I would not store any radio with a battery installed. You are correct, the internal battery is useful, and I have made lots of contacts both on VHF and HF with it. 73, Tim, DK8MT...

      Hello Tim, I should have mentioned not to leave the internal battery in the 817 for any length of time if it’s not going to be used.

      I’m a big fan of the 817 (now 818) and I’ve owned one since 2006. As well as HF it would give you VHF & UHF all modes too. Its pretty good on 2m SSB. It’s a QRP radio and not everyone’s cup of tea but I love it. 73 Chris M0RSF

    Chris, thank you for this video. I definitely needed it. Slightly different issue, can you clarify, If I have the AA pack installed, , is it safe to use an external power source? Is there circuitry to prevent attempted charging of the AAs? Or must I unplug or remove the AA pack? I'll probably upgrade to a Windcamp battery system but right now have a different setup. Thanks for any thoughts you or anyone else may have on this. 73 KE4RXM

    • @M0RSF
      @M0RSF  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Tom, personally I remove any internal batteries when using an external power source. I’m sure that I’ve read somewhere that leaving any batteries in the 817 for any length of time was one of the causes of the finals to fail. I’m not too familiar with the Windcamp battery setup but I believe it’s quite popular. 73 Chris M0RSF

    Great video, and to the point.
    Thanks.
    I noticed a red light on top when you were showing the menus, I take it that the radio has been modified.
    Is there any chance you could explain what mods if any you have done to your radio and what if any other mods can be done to the 817.
    Thanks
    Andy. M7KHI

    • @M0RSF
      @M0RSF  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Andy, the little red light on top is because I have the bhi NEDSP1061-KBD module fit in my 817. It’s a noise reduction module that is one of the best add ons for the 817 and works on AM, FM, CW & SSB. If you search for it online you should find the website easy enough. The other thing you may notice is that I have the Palm Peg Legs installed which give a better viewing angle so the display is easier to read.
      Well done on passing the Foundation and welcome to the hobby. Enjoy the 817. It’s an amazing bit of kit and I’ve owned one since 2006.

    Hi Chris, hope all's well with you. Just to confirm that the charge period for the FT-818 is also spot on at 8 hours. I try not to over charge it, i.e. leave it charging beyond what it needs. Note that the supplied battery pack is type SBR-32MH and is rated at 1900mAh. Cheers, Rick M1RAL

      I own three SBR-32MH batteries and they're all stamped 1900mAh on the front label, but 2000mAh on the opposite side. That's Yaesu progress for ya! 🤣

    fast charge = heat = weakens the battery.
    slower charge = less heat = longer battery life.
