👑👑👑 I'm in the midst of releasing my dream miniature brush as well as some wonderfully sculpted miniature busts mid June 2020. It's something I'm really proud of and been working on for the better part of the last year. You can already pre register your interest on my Kickstarter page: bit.ly/3dKjmnz 👑👑👑

It's a technique used in many old paintings. Look at 'Dante & Virgil' by Bougoureau (classical painting). The essence is: prime with a very dark, warm tint (often Burnt Umber or even red) and establish the shapes on that (not necessary on miniature), add the darkest points/shadows with a transluscent dark blue/brown, then work up to the mid-tones/primary colour of the surface with a less transluscent colour (yellow in this case) to create volume. That gives you the kind of surface Peña uses, which is amazing to then layer and work on.
What many people don't understand is: to get a really vibrating dark/black-ish colour, or a very vibrant light, the worst thing you can do is use black or white. A professional/realistic painter rarely uses pure white/black in anything because it flattens all the other colours. It's mostly a mix of ultramarine blue and vandyke brown/dark brown. Reason being that: if you then layer in contrasted colors on top, those colours all work together creating something approaching real-life. That is: unless you're painting 80's metal style, that just all-white highlights. But it's a stylistic choice.

I just wanted to drop in a sec, and say thanks for the tip about coconut fiber. I actually found it at PetSmart (a chain pet store in the US), and for surprisingly dirt cheap. I also snagged a bag each of the larger bark pieces (I already have a bucketload of the smaller stuff, like for tiny lizards; the bigger ones are for larger lizards, and are like what you use for basing and larger terrain pieces) and ground walnut shells (it's tiny enough to work on bases and terrain as smaller stones, loose gravel, etc.). This ought to up my basing and terraining a fair bit, as it's something that was definitely lacking thus far. My minis all thank you kindly.

@@SquidmarMiniatures my new scheme for my Imperial Fists is.
      .Magenta base
.Gold Yellow (Game Air) building up intensity.
.Sun Yellow (Game Air) 45° angle.
.Moon Yellow (Game Air) zenithal from directly above.
.Add a little white and spot highlight (Helmet, shoulders, top of knees. The usual focal points)
.Pin/Recess wash Carabourg Crimson (Citadel) this works well going back to the magenta and keeps a warm look.
.Glaze back in the shadows with various browns.
.Glaze extreme highlights with bone colour and edge highlight selected sharp edges at the same time.
That's pretty much it for how I'm doing them now. Was gonna make a tutorial as my first painting vid on my channel as not many people know the magenta trick. I'm just gonna send them here instead!

Hey Squid. I notice you and others love to use their dry pigments to add some great depth to the models. But one thing I rarely ever hear discussed is their durability. If you're leaving this model finished with pigments as you have, does that mean it's a display model that no longer gets handled?
If you were intending to use it for play, would you seal it with varnish? And if so, how would you ensure it maintains the natural dry effect the pigments are intended to produce?
