This was a partial fragrance history of my family. Gran wore no5 daily. Mom's daily was Rive Gauche and no5 at night. My first signature was Paris. I got teary seeing the reaction to no5. I know it smelled like gran.
This was the most incredible moment on youtube I've ever witnessed ~ the opening of the Chanel No. 5 flaçon. Thank you so much for sharing this special moment(s) with us, Dariush jan. Enjoy these beauties. I can't imagine your collection now. Must be incredible.
Lovely to see my favourite perfume critic so happy. And well deserved. Few people will appreciate and analyse a vintage No. 5 like you do. Your reaction made me smile!
What a fantastic journey! That YSL bottle and presentation with the green velvet and gold, flacon shape, heart 💔💔 I love it so much. Thank you so much for sharing your goodies, Persolaise! I’m so glad you’re enjoying that No.5 so much.
Thank you. This was such a joy to watch! I have a vintage Fleur de Parfum and the EDT of YSL Paris, and like yours, the top notes have gone off, but the heart notes are so beautiful just like you described. It really is the most romantic and joyful scent I’ve experienced. Fortunately, the newer formulations of the EDT are still close to the original, but perhaps not as strong. The newer EDPs smell strange and unpleasant to my nose. I love your enthusiasm and description of these vintage finds.
Thank you for sharing with us such wondeful jewels, treasures, I don't know how to express better! You are very gentle, a special man and I really love your channel, I appreciate your work, you are so passionate! Thank you so much for every single video!❤️
When Paris was launched in 1983 I was working at the fragrance counter at a department store in Palm Springs CA. I went to YSL's launch party for the fragrance in Los Angeles and so this perfume has a special place in my heart, because it brings me back to my youth & nubile womanhood. In my opinion the marketing & aesthetic of the packaging of both the perfume and the bath products was gorgeous. That said, and while I appreciate its well blended & balanced powdery bouquet, Paris was never a love for me. In my 20s I mainly wore and loved chypres like Aromatics Elixir, Dioressence, Paloma Picasso & Shiseido's original Zen & Ambers like Opium, Emeraude & Youth Dew , so YSL's Paris didn't really align with what I typically bought & wore. When I did go outside of those heavy hitters, the florals I wore were Ombre Rose, & Chanel N 5 (I went through several bottles of those) and because of my job selling fragrances I remember being given and enjoying bottles of Oscar de la Renta & Anais Anais. But all these florals beat out Paris and I'm sure that I wouldn't have own a bottle of Paris if I hadn't been gifted it. I have a bottle of the current EDT formulation and while it is quite a bit weaker from what I remember, I think on the whole Yves Saint Laurent has done a decent job of preserving Sophia Grojsman's original creation. They certainly could have done worst. In my opinion of all the fragrances that I just mentioned Chanel N 5 & Youth Dew have done the best at preserving the formula, but to my nose Paris comes in a respectable third. Zen & Ombre Rose are also still wearable. But the chypres.... it breaks my fragrance heart when I smell the current rendition of those.
After owning various iterations and formulations of N5, there's something about the vintage that the modern just can't seem to grasp or match. That "lush" and "gentle" aura. The depth and the sincerity that made N5 a cultural icon. Nevertheless, this does not take away that modern N5 is in any way inferior. She's the successor. The posterity and the inevitable future of N5. Something unmatched and unrivalled. Many perfumes have come to take the crown away, coco mad, br540, opium, J'adore to name a few. But none of them succeeded. It's still a mystery how Chanel N5, a complex composition with a very simple, subtle and divine smell stood the test of time. Perhaps, Mademoiselle was right about the luck-giving nature of Number 5.
Oh! I forgot! My husband wants to know if you’ve ever done (or will do in the future) a “white t-shirt” fragrance list? What he means is fragrances that a perfect with a simple white t-shirt: classic, elegant, simple without being common, great art without being heavy or overdone. Thanks Mr. P!
I have a full size vintage Chanel °5 black laquer bottle that no longer has any juice inside but still retains the scent and I love to pop the top and smell it sometimes just to enjoy the real deal as opposed to the disaster recreated in the mid 80's by Jacque Polge. Ahhh..the smell of it.
SO happy you're back (but dichotomously sad that my happiness comes at the expense of your ended holiday). I know you didn't want a discussion about IFRA on here but I just wanted to quickly say that although I detest the idea of its fettering perfume art, my mum--who's an even bigger perfume lover than I--is grateful for it as her scent allergies are now kept at bay, allowing here rejoin the world of fragrance fanaticism again. Great haul, btw.
@@Persolaise my pleasure mate😉 I really appreciate watching your videos👌 Cheerio mate🥂 PS life was easier for the perfumers without those silly regulations imposed by IFRA! 👎
Jacques Cavallier is my favorite perfumer of all time. I might try to get a bottle of this one, love how well he executes citrus accords and Opium pour Homme appears to be something completely different! Very intrigued to try it, hope I can get it sometime!
I remember Rive Gauche from the 70's & it was a favourite of mine but I haven't worn it for a long time. I saw it when I was in the airport this year & was drawn to it, but what a disappointment. I am no expert on perfumes & although I recognised the scent it was nothing like what I remembered. It was so weak, the punch had gone completely. I mentioned this to my sister & she said she had bought some recently & also thought that it was different. I am on the look out for a vintage bottle as I still would like to wear it again. Perfume brings back so many memories of past years.
@@Persolaise Can I ask you something? I am a vintage Dior fan & have a few Dior-Dior Eau De Toilette's from the 70's. I also have the perfume version which I don't use, I am a sprayer not a dabber lol. Would I be able to add perfumers alcohol to it to make it an Eau De Parfum, or would this be sacrilege? & best just left alone. I know some people are probably spitting nails at this question lol.

This was so much fun!!!!! Thank you!!!!!! So funny you mentioning Opium pour Homme and Jaipur is one sentence......I used to date a guy in the 90's who wore them both, along with Le Mâle...... I have very romantic ideas about vintage fragrances, but haven't been very lucky with them. The few that I bought (I so wanted to smell the real Vol de Nuit again) were a little disappointing. So I now focus on more modern fragrances but seeing you smell these treasures is a delight. Rive Gauche and Paris were BOMB! I also think Paris smelled modern at the time.
I wore Paris in 1987 when I was 15, alternating with Tatiana and Anais Anais. It smelled very rosy, not like today’s version (today’s smells more like the dry down used to? It’s not as intense). As I High School aged person during that time period, it didn’t feel “dated” to me back then. But after smelling it on so many people since then, it does feel that way now. Your reactions were great :).
That was an exciting video. How wonderful that they were all still in such good condition, quite a treasure trove, that shop. My friend used to wear Paris in the Eighties, and Rive Gauche, I am showing my age but I do still have a weakness for a lot of the perfums that were launched the 80 and 90s, even though I would not necessarily wear them anymore. I am still mourning Armani by Giorgio Armani.
Third comment now as you mentioned No. 19. I actually got a vintage-ish No. 19 EdT some time ago. Two splash bottles and probably not very vintage (not sure at what age vintage starts) but definitely older. Absolutely loved it but gave it to my mum as a gift as she adores it as well. My only vintage perfume so far. But I can imagine the excitement.

We will have to agree to disagree on IFRA 😅 The concept of providing consumer safety is wonderful. The amount of money being thrown around by aromachemical companies means it is not about altruism. Similar to medicine in the US. Vintage Paris and Dolce Vita have a special place in my heart because they were my moms signatures growing up. 💗
Well, disagreement can be very healthy. The main point I wanted to convey is that the situation isn’t as clear-cut and ‘black and white’ as some seem to believe.
