Alright, let's try this again: Mark, take a look at The Last Door. It's a pixelated point'n'click game with lovecraftian/psychological background. It sort of went under the radar but it will totally be up your alley.
The Last Door is legitimately one of my favorite games of all time. Season Two wasn't quite as good as season one, but the series as a whole is a masterpiece and was made before pixel art style games like that became a big fad.

The second game had a kind of horror that can't be made intentionally, the whole place was eerie, and the back to back to back jumpscares actually got me, even though jumpscares usually don't get me.

Some people are terrified of it like shown in this first game, but then I know of a popular manga called "Call of the Night" that romanticizes, and personally I'm a big fan of the 2am walk through winter streets and how quiet the snow makes it. It reminds me of the countless occasions I used to walk the streets alone at night, particularly on cold nights. The streets were completely deserted, not a soul in sight. Just the darkness and the silence broken only by my own footsteps

My point of view was more like the panic starting to set in like when we were kids and we turn off lights and start running to our rooms, the closer we get the more we feel like something is about to grab us.
That's what I got from that, the feeling someone is looking at you and the closer you get to your safe zone the more panic and paranoid you get because you think something will get you before that.
