I’ve been loving this series. I went to drama school straight out of secondary school as a fresh faced 16 year old. I quit performing pretty soon after and retrained as a pharmacist (a career which is much better suited to my personality and life goals) but I still have all those memories of drama school that I don’t get to revisit often. I look back on my time in training with a pretty heavy amount of disdain for the whole process and some of the people I encountered but watching you live it is reminding me of some of the positives and the fun I had whilst I was there. So thank you for that.
I was more than a little anxious about that kind of feeling when I took the plunge on the course, I’m so sorry you had that experience! I was so grateful to learn that the postgrad course leaders at MV both have their own masters degrees in actor training and see it as a mission to correct some of the toxic behaviour and treatment of years past. And I definitely think Masters degrees have a different energy to being bright eyed and bushy tailed, so I hope I can keep reminding you of the positives while you’re living your better life on the path that was meant for you!!
@@DanLaytonyeah things definitely do seem to be improving now which is good. Also, I started my training 10 years ago when telling people to skip meals and that they’re too fat for certain roles was very much the norm so I’m hoping it’s not like that any more
As a nosy, greedy person, would love to see some of what you’re eating to fuel yourself through this, especially if you’re working on a budget. Just as a normal person!
very fun to live vicariously through a little week vlog on this, my fourth day alone as i try to stop having the plague. also very good to see someone making masters' level study work despite it being hard whilst i procrastinate finishing my own grad school applications. impeccable vibes for this moment in my life, thank you Daniel.
man :') last year i went back to uni, some years after an absolute train-wreck of an unfinshed degree and seeing your journey is so inspiring. thanks for sharing it with us!!
I’d love to see more of these Dan. I know these videos are maybe focused towards people interested in pursuing musical theatre but, as someone working in a completely different and non-creative field, I find this fascinating because I’ve never been exposed to anything like this before.
Hooray, a vlog! Lovely! So, just an outsider's perspective, but it seems to me like perhaps the reason Thursdays are being a tricky struggle for you is simple fatigue. It's four days in, you don't get your normal downtime the night before, the weekend is stilll a day away, and you can't slack because it's the subject you care most about. Mate, I think maybe you're just *tired* on Thursdays. Which makes it hard to focus and learn and perform. But you're also too enthused for it to register as such. Still, sounds like you're smashing it regardless, and it's absolutely delightful to see what it's like. Thanks for sharing the journey with us!
I think you’re absolutely right. I’m on the bus on my way in and just bone tired today. I wonder how it’d be if this was Tuesday’s schedule!! Working out how to take care and make sure I’m not burnt out and overtired is such a tricky business.
It's strangely comforting that you are also feeling a bit burnt out, nice to know other uni students are getting to that point in the semester where trying to keep a social life and work hard clash. Also I am so far behind on Taskmaster and Strictly, you would not believe.
Wow it’s really lovely to watch you thriving. Like I know this also shows the knackering side (and very glad you made the choice for yourself to cancel your weekend plans to recupe) but you can just tell you were born to be there. Loved the vlog, another would be welcomed whenever you have the energy for it, keep doing you, we’re all behind you
Holy shit, Dan, the difference between your voice in the audition tape and in this vlog is *insane*. Like, to my musical-but-vocally-untrained ear, you sound like a professional singer now! That's amazing! And I can't wait to see how many more skills you'll end up honing throughout this journey. You're a rockstar! (And this whole thing is objectively hard.)
The what have we learned this week section was missing the last part, so I'm gonna add one for you - "and we've learned that Daniel J Layton (actor) is the winner of this week's episode!!!" You're doing good (even if it doesn't always feel like it) - thank you for bringing us along on the journey!
Living for those vlogs! It's interesting, my boyfriend has started this very intensive Bar course around the same time you started your masters and I find so many parallels in your experiences even though it seems like two massively different environments. But I see the same mix of excitement, exhaustion, dread of feeling like you're struggling to catch up. And in the end I think that might just be what drive and purpose feels like 🤷🏻♀️

Benjamin Button is SO GOOD! What a show! To me it's the next big musical in the West End. I was BAWLING by the end, which rarely - if ever - happens to me at the theatre.
i had the opposite problem of having the time to watch a film in my master's... my diss was about the accuracy of the science in science fiction films for which i watched 14 films multiple time
Hey Daniel! As a lover of musical theatre, but a noob in all of this, may I request a kind of MT101 video? A lot of this video I find myself just lost in all the terminology, especially the music-parts :) It is lovely to see you thrive, though!
my vocal coach said that when you stand on the stage, the time for rehearsals is over and whatever sits just sits and everything else is what you have to work on
Really loved this vlog Dan, would happily watch many more like this! Getting to see a snippet of what your master's looks like is super interesting (although it does look exhausting tbf). I've always loved watching musicals, theatre, movies, live music etc, but I don't like being the centre of attention so I have never tried acting or anything of the sort myself. Your vlogs are really inspiring though and kind of make me wish I'd tried it when I was younger. I hope you were able to rest up a bit last weekend, thanks so much for giving us these videos when you're already super busy with uni, work, your social life and all the rest. You're one of the people I've been continuously subscribed to the longest (11 years now!), and it feels kind of weird to say this, but I feel really proud of you and it makes me so happy to see you living out your dreams. Keep up the good work, remember your why, and have a lovely rest of your week :) x
I really appreciate you sharing these. I’m not interested in acting for myself but changing or re-starting careers is very interesting to me as I’m considering similar things now. I do think going back to studies after working for a while gives you different perspective and the ability to recognize the value of it and focus on what matters.
I sent my best friend these videos to encourage her to go for this as well, as a reminder of your own passion and strength to pursue musical theatre, because you're quite similar and thank you so much for this❤
You are doing great. It is wonderful following a long. I (too?) struggle with the idea of doing something new and the possible failure that will bring. But it is not failure - it is the first natural step in learning. Why I have not accepted this yet is a mystery :)
Have really been debating going back to school but you saying ‘yes this is stressful but compared to what it used to be,’ is for sure leading me back in that direction ❤️
Ooooh I loved Close to You starring Elliot Page which is directed by Dominic Savage who also has his actors improvise all the scenes. Hughly recommend it. I must check out Mike Lee's work as well
9:00 Go off king!! Love seeing your progress and experiences Dan. Your videos are ones that I consistently rewatch as your energy is so calming, honest and always so insightful. It's lovely to see you put your all into this endeavour, and it's also good to see you take care yourself, as (speaking from experience) performing arts degrees - even across the world here in Australia - are very demanding, and never stop being demanding (until they are done!)
For the Alexander exercise, if your knees are going open try using a belt around your knees so you can fully relax, also depending on who teaches it the arms are either on the stomach, crossed over chest with your elbows up (hands hug your shoulders / rest near them), or sides, maybe try some of those so you can relax your shoulders too.
I can see what you mean when you say your simging voice has changed! Its always been lovely but now you really sound like someone i would hear on a cast recording ❤
As soon as you mentioned the Alexander technique it all can flooding back to me my experience of working out wtf was going on. I still use this technique, unknowingly most of the time to regulate.
It’s reminding me of when I started Yoga, and I didn’t really get what Adrienne was on about with “moving from a place of connect” or “pressing down with all four corners of the feet” until about a week into daily practice and I noticed I was doing it 😅
ok first of all i apologize for the length of this comment but i gotta be so real with you: im not particularly sober rn and i am feeling very sentimental and i literally went into my youtube history to release that energy here specifically so u have fair warning lmao dan i really love these vlogs and all this insight into your grad school journey SO much ❤️ i just found out that i'm into a graduate program for library science (after an extremely challenging (and slightly longer than average...) but ultimately succesful undergraduate experience) and i am soooo excited/nervous about it and it really feels like such a little lovely parallel that i get to watch you tackle such a similar challenge at the same time plus on a parasocial level, i've also just been subscribed to you since i was like 13 (12 years ago? insane) and im just so happy for you because i know how passionate you are and i think it's great when people i like achieve their dreams. also on a nerdy level, it's just really cool to get a glimpse of what advanced coursework is like in a subject that i know i'll never personally study. i did start college/uni as a music major tho (and i did theater when i was like 12) and i must say it made me laugh to learn that even at the graduate level, performing arts instructors are obsessed with asking their students to lie on their backs on the ground for some reason or another anyway thank u for sharing all of this and taking us along with you, i'm really glad that while i was making some attempt to grow up and find my voice, i got to watch you do the same thing ❤️
I'm in the last year of my undergrad and I really feel the academic paper thing! I've found it really helpful to not pressure myself to understand it straight away, sometimes I have to read a paragraph three or four times before I understand what they're getting at.

Watching these videos on your journey makes me so happy. Even if it's a stressful week for you. It just reminds me so much of when i started my bachelor in social work. Even the subjects that scared me (like law) were so exciting because I got to learn something about the thing I'm really passionate about. And now I am a social worker and I get to do the thing I'm really passionate about. Everything is more exciting when you have a purpose
It's so cool to see what a week is like for you nowadays!!! I really think one of the joys of studying a creative subject is to have teachers and classmates that are so passionate for what they do and are there to help you out, the sense of community is so affirming and SO important when things get tough. I'd also love to hear a little more about what your classes technically are!
I get the semi-supine thing!! Dw too much about not being able to explain things, some people will know what you’re on about and it’s really interesting hearing about how it ties into acting (tell me more!) ps love these videos! 🫶
I had a singing teacher who was a big fan of Alexander Technique. On more than one occasion she put her hands on my shoulders to hold them down because they jumped up a lot whilst I sang. She was actually a musical theatre performer who had been in Blood Brothers (and Emmerdale twice but as different characters)
It's definitely something I really want to dive in on at some point, I find it really interesting! The bits we've tried have definitely been useful. Just having the time to let it settle in my head is a bit of a challenge haha
@@DanLayton I definitely have very basic information about it. My local college had a whole course about it at one point and I remember thinking, "But it's just standing up straight..." WRONG, ADELE!
The academics using more words than necessary... God yes! I feel it! Its as if somewhere in their PhD they forget how to write in plain, clear, language.
Haha my husband's whole family is like that. They can't even just say "wanna hang out tomorrow" they say "I wanted to inquire if you are interested in spending some time together tomorrow" lmao
Always would love to see more! I have the fondest memories of my theatre degree years and it's really heartwarming to go back to that place with you and the folks in these comments. :) Hope this week has been kinder to you!
it’s not a jazz class without wondering how much dance you’ve actually done compared to horrendously difficult cardio that leaves you feeling like you don’t have legs
heyyy could you possible talk about how you’ve found returning to education after a few years and what being a mature student has been like? i’ve toyed with the idea but the dread is scaring me off. loved the video!
I have just finished my masters program (different subject to you) and I want to say that everyone feels behind all the time. No one on my course or on any other degree program felt like they could complete everything. My biggest piece of advice is to pick your battles - while every class and every teacher will want you to prioritise their class, it may not be possible or even worth it for you. Decide what you want out of the course and do the work needed to achieve that. If it doesn't fit with what you want to achieve, then it's ok if you only give it 50% or don't do it at all.
Academic writing is an absolute bitch. Like I KNOW that the clauses all TECHNICALLY make sense and work together but god there is a way to write that is intended to communicate information to the reader and I don't think they care about being understood
I’m 21 and in community college and kinda floating around not knowing what I want to do so I rly like your videos. Idk if yall have that in the UK it’s a smaller college that’s generally cheaper but you can graduate/transfer with credits to a bigger college. I feel like everyone is a million miles ahead bc I don’t know what I want to do and there’s already people jumping into their lives. Hope all is well and life up there at school is treating you as good as it can be. If I had to ask you one question what can I do to narrow the choices down and pick the path I want to go on?
Desperately want to know whether you've read If We Were Villains - M. L. Rio, and if so, what your take is. Your drama school journey makes me think of it sm!
I don't think I would have found your channel, if Dodie Clarke had not made a video where she sang "On my own" from Les Misérables. (Just checked, yes it was 10 years ago).
If anyone can do this it's you Daniel J Layton, Actor! If it's not real it's not right!!!!
What a beautiful, accurate and meaningful mantra, whoever invented it sounds wonderful
it's so nice to see that the classmates are happy to be included, it looks like a fun vibe

oh wow, i'm so happy to see this vlog
Always would love to see more! I have the fondest memories of my theatre degree years and it's really heartwarming to go back to that place with you and the folks in these comments. :) Hope this week has been kinder to you!
it’s not a jazz class without wondering how much dance you’ve actually done compared to horrendously difficult cardio that leaves you feeling like you don’t have legs
This is my favourite type of content!
I'm so happy to see a weekly vlog!
Fascinating stuff, just love hearing about your journey! As energy permits, of course, no pressure.
I really like this concept and it's encouraging me to get back into vlogging so please continue
heyyy could you possible talk about how you’ve found returning to education after a few years and what being a mature student has been like? i’ve toyed with the idea but the dread is scaring me off. loved the video!
I absolutely can!! I’ve loved being a mature student, most days I think about how I’m so grateful that I waited until I was ready
so so proud of you dan ❤
As a adult going back to do nursing it is so hard so well done
I'm so glad you are having the best of times! 🎉
No but Dan I had to rewind 08:59 several times cause it was so good
P.s. You've made me finally watch Chess 🙌
Very fun vlog Dan, I miss you on WT but happy to see you succeeding 💞
Keep your eyes peeled next week 👀👀
From Carries vlogs to your vlogs- it seems all theatre kids are the same !! Lush
Keep them coming!! 🔥🙌
This is great
I really love these vlogs!
Yeah I’ve picked the right comfort TH-camr
I loved this!!
Academic writing is an absolute bitch. Like I KNOW that the clauses all TECHNICALLY make sense and work together but god there is a way to write that is intended to communicate information to the reader and I don't think they care about being understood
Crashed my car on Friday so I've been waiting for this update
Thursday's just a bit of a shit day innit. Anyway good job keep going you're doing grand x
I agree that tea out of a travel mug does not work. It is not a vibe.
I hadn't heard Dan sing before, sounds a bit like Hugh jackman
I don't think I would have found your channel, if Dodie Clarke had not made a video where she sang "On my own" from Les Misérables. (Just checked, yes it was 10 years ago).
We love a time capsule!!!
