Sailing Pittwater Part 1

- This is a little summary of our recent sailing trip to Pittwater and Cowan Creek - luckily just before Australia went into isolation. We have sailed in Pittwater with Sailtime Australia, which works like a membership system and lets you sail whenever you like. Check them out!
This time however, we chartered a Beneteau Oceanis 38.1 from Skipper A Clipper in Bayview for 5 days. Pittwater and Cowan Creek are stunning bodies of water, 1 hour north of Sydney. It is surrounded by the pristine Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and provides great sailing and an abundance of quiet and secluded anchorages.

Thanks Jimi! Yeah if we go up there again we’d love to film even more locations. Hopefully it can help others who are interested in sailing Cowan and Pittwater. Maybe we can all go sailing together one day!
Hey Jimi, Yes I am constantly amazed that Sydney has such a beautiful and seemingly isolated spot so close to the city. One of the best sailing spots in NSW I reckon. The Beneteau was great too. Plenty of room for 38 and the swim deck is great for those sorts of trips. Hope you enjoy episode 2
So why did you choose the 38 Beneteau? what are your future sailing plans?
Hi Josh, To clarify we chartered it in March (don't think we mentioned that until Part 2) but to answer your question we initially chose this boat as it was pretty new and had a newish electronic package and new sails etc. All the other boats we have sailed were 7 to 10 years old. We also wanted it to see what living with a large swim platform was like, basically it's awesome. It's great for getting in and out of the tender, great for showering and just hanging out. We also wanted to to try a twin helm which provides a bit more space in the cockpit. The downside is I found the twin rudders less responsive under sail than older single rudder versions. Another great thing about the newer Beneteaus is, the forward cabin is moved a bit aft meaning that the bow end of the bed is square (as opposed to a V berth) which means you sleep with your head towards the bow. So much better. Would I buy one? Probably not. Only reason being our sailing plans involve more offshore sailing. East coast of Australia, Melanesia and New Zealand. So we are looking at (to buy) production boats that are a bit older (due to cost obviously) and set up for more blue water cruising. We are trying to find a balance between a solid production boat with modern conveniences and more open plan layout and older dedicated blue water cruisers (like Tayana, Tartan or Moody) which I have found a bit too much boat for us, if that makes sense. This is a very brief description of course. I could go on for hours. Having said that, this 38.1 was modern, had plenty of space for the two of us and would be a brilliant inshore or coastal cruiser.
