    I've been using the Nanopresso for about two years. Before Covid-19 I use to bring it to work everyday alongside a small grinder a few beans and made lattes during my break. The thing that I loved the most was going through the whole routine. It was very relaxing felt great after being at the computer for hours at end.

    I think this is for your camping kit, and maybe for work. You pack the coffee you need, and use the camp stove or office kettle for water. It's an Aeropress for the espresso enthusiast

      Camping is the first thing that comes to mind when I see this machine. Using it outside of camping is just for fun. The other side of the coin would be, if the dude lived in a tent and brought one of the other machines for his espresso, sure it might still be better coffee, but then he's gotta take into account... weight (robot @ 7+lb), electricity?, a refractometer, gdealer, batteries, cup, tamp, etc, etc, etc.

    Just wanted to toss in some experience as an owner of this product.
    This makes a great little travel device. Road trips, hiking, camping, fishing, at the office those kinds of applications show off this designs pro's.
    1. I've found that grinding a little coarser and filling the basket a bit more helps the unit brew with greater success. This device can be a bit finnicky when it comes to pressure during extraction. I've had brews lose all pressure (resulting in total failure) and had brews build too much pressure (resulting in failure). The process can actually be a bit mind numbing because the variables causing these to failures can honestly be a bit hard to diagnose. Best advice is to build a routine and stick to it, same grind size, same dose amount, same tamp pressure. I honestly feel like the 18bar rating was done so that if over pressurization happened past 9 bar it wouldn't cause a failure. I believe there's actually a over pressure valve the stop extreme failures.
    2. Get the barista kit. Just do yourself that favor, it's worth it if you have a use for the nanopresso. It lets you do more with the nanopresso and has extra baskets with lids so you can pack up a few baskets, head to work, hike, camp, and be ready to go right away (minus hot water).
    3. Read their website. Tucked away in the depths of wacaco's website are a few pages containing information about the minipresso and nanopresso. These have information on what to expect, how to dial in the unit, tips and tricks. Reading these helped a lot when trying to get consistency, good crema, and a good shot.
    4. WARNING! Be careful with this machine. I've had a few issues with threading on the different sections. I've had the brew head stick a few times (soak it in hot water for a few seconds and twist with a towel to remove it) I've had the water reservoir come off while I was prepping a shot, went to pull the cup off the reservoir and the whole water tank came off and dumped fresh boiled water onto my hand. To be fair to Wacaco, this isn't an inherent design flaw that makes the unit dangerous. But some extra threading would have prevented this potential. (Removing the cup first is an option but the plastic reservoir heats up QUICK making it hard the hold while attaching to the unit without the cup in place).
    TLDR: This is a great travel device, with awesome accessories. Be careful when operating the unit as there's some slight burn potential but after getting the hang of it you can dial it in to have good shots and dark crema that sure beat having no coffee.

    To me, it is a great entry level espresso maker on a budget.
    I think you said it best when you said your words about not getting caught up comparing the nanopresso to an espresso machine, it's certainly not that but it stands (almost) on it's own as an "espresso machine" for its price point. I make filter coffee at home with v60 and aeropress but wanted something to start making espresso's. Everything seemed out of my budget and wants (very cheap but well reviewed) except for the nanopresso.
    Gotta buy a small funnel man, that's what I use to minimise mess when transferring the grounds to the basket. I also recommend the barista kit so you can pull double shots.

    I own one of these and I take it with me when I travel as a "just in case" option. I do a fair bit of bicycle travel and I'm often in small towns with really limited options. Is it good? For what it is, it's excellent. Compared to motel room coffee or no espresso, excellent. Compared to my Robot, not so much. Compared to an excellent or even decent cafe, not so much. If, like Sprometheus, I couldn't find a use for it, I'd have to agree that it's not really worth getting. But with a specific use, as I have, it's super. Back in the day when I worked in an office instead of at home, I'd leave it at the office for a quick pick-me-up. This is really a use specific item that does a fine job in those certain niches.

    I have one and purchased the barista kit to go with it. I don't have a home espresso maker; so I use it there. If I were to take it camping, I wouldn't bring a thermos, I'd boil water on site. Because I have the barista kit, I have three portafilters with lids. So I can pre-load them and bring them along.
    As for creating a mess when loading the portafilter. I place a small saucer under the portafilter to catch the spilling. It makes for a quick and easy cleanup.
    I enjoyed your honest review and, as always, look forward to more. Thank you for your time and effort.

    Pony boy! I got a couple thoughts, since you asked 😉
    1. You’re telling me you evaluated a handheld espresso machine without preheating the unit first?! Maybe you did but I didn’t see it in the video. That’s pretty standard protocol nowadays I think, so I’m sure your shots were not great if you didn’t preheat both the unit and the drinking glass.
    2. The barista kit is totally worth the extra investment for the nanopresso. It comes with a double (14-16g) basket that really kicks this machine’s usefulness up a notch and a bigger water reservoir.
    3. You gotta take that little ball and spring out to remove the pressurized component to get best results. Team non-pressurized all the way.
    4. I agree with the guy who said this is for camping/hiking stuff but would add that’s it’s also very easy to travel with.. thinking for long flights, road trips through the middle of coffee deserts, maybe something easy to keep at the office (if that thing happens again).

    • @Sprometheus
      @Sprometheus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn’t specifically aim to pre-heat it, but I pulled plenty of shots back to back that I don’t think it was an issue, and same with the cup. Also considering it sat on top of the espresso machine.
      On a side note, apparently pre-hearing is a sensitive topic on Reddit. Maybe they’ll get mad I didn’t do it in this one.
      The barista kit is definitely cool, but I just worked with what Wacaco sent me. They maybe missed an opportunity for a bit of a better final outcome had they done that.
      It’s funny, I did look up stuff about the Nanopresso before filming and found no one talking about being able to remove the pressurized portion until comments today.

    My wife and I have been travelling and moving countries/apartments every month or so for the past couple of years and for us this has been really handy. The capsule attachment for Nespresso pods is great where the off chance it might be a bit difficult to find beans to grind. Sometimes we've found it easier to acquire pods than to find decent beans (and it's less messy!).

  • @mixeddrinks8100
    @mixeddrinks8100 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think the best use for this, is with the Nespresso attachment when traveling. Works pretty good for that, especially when you are traveling with an electric kettle on road trips. It certainly beats the hotel/motel room's coffee, some of those are dirty, and others don't seem to heat up the water hot enough. Not every place have decent coffee house either. Size for capsule and this are both compact and pretty sturdy. I wouldn't suggest using actual own ground coffee or pre-ground. Cleanup is a breeze, and small enough to rinse in the water, pretty much no assembly required and quite light weight, just toss the capsule when you are done. I borrowed a friend's specifically for a trip last year we did 3 States and went to multiple national parks. Some are in the middle of no where, Petrified Forest NP, nearest hotel is like few miles, but no big town. Heat up one pot of water on an electric kettle and boom, easily do two capsule back to back. Just count how many you think you might need and bring enough for the trip.

I found it useful everytime i need shot in a zero coffee machine/caffee office/places like my office and my dorm room. I have the nanopresso along with its barista kit and the capsule adaptor. I agree with your final thoughts about it, but I personally take it with me to places where there are no espresso/coffee machines, or if I’m traveling to places where I’m not sure of their availability, but there is a kettle or a stove to boil water. It really helped me to continue enjoying the different coffees I purchase, away from home. The barista kit is quite convenient with the double shot basket and lids. And the capsule adapter also adds more convenience on the go and opens up opportunities for trying different Nespresso capsules without having a Nespresso machine 😅

    I think the user for this particular unit is someone like my mom. She wants espresso, won’t spend a ton of money to make it (so she won’t buy a big machine, grinder, etc.), definitely wouldn’t use something like the Robot, and needs something easy to use. This seems to check those boxes for the most part. It’s pretty inexpensive all things considered, you can buy preground coffee, and most people have kettles or can boil water at home. My only concern would be how much coffee you get out, but I guess it’s not far off from a standard dopio or how I’d brew (1:2, 18g in and 36g out). Anyway, this certainly is for a specific person (perhaps for those who camp too), but it’s a small sliver of users. Thank you for the honest review and your take! Looking forward to the next video already 😊

    My journey into espresso is ever growing but it has still taken years. For a student or even an office worker looking to curb your weekly cafe costs. And have access to an insta hot and a kettle while at school or an office. With a companion hand grinder this thing is banging. For the price and ease of use you can't get much better. Also bonus people at work will think your an interesting person and management will think your a connoisseur of good taste. I have spent a lot of time as a student in studio and office environments with access to kitchenettes or an electric kettle to know this thing is awesome in a pinch.

    My job had one of those separate sink faucets for filtered hot/cold water. I would often use the hot water to preheat this thing before pulling a shot on my 15min break. Compared to walking to the coffee shop next door, even if they had a pickup window, this was a better, fresher shot that I could enjoy without rushing around on such a short break. I also bring it when I travel if I know the place I go to will not have an espresso (or even decent coffee) machine with a small jar ~50g worth of fresh grounds (1-2 days worth).
    I have taken it camping once, but never again. The amount of preheat/clean up was too difficult. I love to have it as a lightweight option for when I travel as long as wherever I’m going has to hot water and a sink!

    I find that utility increases if you get the accessories. Get the thermos that attaches directly to the Nanopresso. This, along with the Nespresso attachment are good for travel. The barista kit lets you make larger shots and/or fill several baskets prior to heading out the door. I’m happy with the system and use it in a variety of places including home, travel, and work. (I work in a prison where we can’t have metal utensils. I can still heat water in the microwave and have my espresso.)

    When I lived in Bali for a year or so it was my saviour! You don't normally stay at the same place longer then a few weeks, you keep only essential stuff. But you still want to have a decent cup of coffee at 5 am before surf, and all the places open only around 7-8 am.
    Also used it in the office as most coffee spots around did not give me as good of a coffee, or I just wanted to sit with my colleagues having lunch together in our kitchen.
    I bought a double basket for it right at the start though. You get some odd 16g of grounds in it! Now we are talking.

    Hi Spro, using it for a year or so essentially at work (no decent coffee) and also for camping or hiking. Better than all the ready to drink coffee for sure. There are definitely tips and tricks such as preheating the device 1-2times to Prevent to much heat loss, using it in unpressurized mode brings you closer to “real espresso” where your grind size can very easily chock the machine. As you said it is not replacing your Mini or Robot but for work and outdoors it is a nice little device capable of delivering satisfying coffee. Cheers mate

Or if you'll be travelling and staying at a hotel for a couple/few days and the cafe scene is non-existent. In either case a good hand burr grinder would also be in order.

    Great review. For me, the appeal to this and other similar brew devices that produces quasi-espresso is camping where I need a brew device that is compact, but where weight isn't a huge concern. I have never used this device. In the past, I would just take an Areopress and these days find myself just taking a pour over device with their ease of use and clean up.

    I have used the staresso (competition) for hotels, stays in homes without espresso makers, and offices where there's a kettle but no room for an espresso maker. I've even used it in planes, although the water is unlikely to be boiling and it can be a bit of a pain in such little space.

    I like to bring my Nanopresso for short trips with the motorcycle, like a 3-4 h roundtrip with a short espresso break in between. Up to 2-3h the water is staying hot enough in the insulated thermos flask. I'd use something like this at work. The automatic Jura machines were once a standard for me in coffee but I grew beyond that. I resort to V60 and a manual grinder because it's the best I can manage at the office, given that I can not use a manual lever machine or take my own portafilter based machine. We don't even have a water kettle but a quooker (or however it's spelled). So this would be a great way to get something resembling espresso as it would fit greatly in my drawer and is easy in use...

    I think a good use would quite literally be not having any counter space or appliances. Examples that come to mind include a dorm, being on the road, situations that’s generally have access to hot water but not enough access to everything else.
    Pretty specific situations but I think even an office that doesn’t have access to a lot could have one laying around for the occasional shot.
    A niche situation but maybe with improvements could be utilized more. I think it’s a good beginning for a product with a lot of potential. Imagine a unit with better heat retention and possibly a stand. That’s direct competition with other machines in that market. Lever etc

    I second all the travel situation endorsements, especially if it's like a hotel where you have ready access to plentiful, hot enough water. Oh, and sending some through the device before brewing will help with that temp drop mentioned in the video. I really like mine and it scratches that espresso itch much better than an aeropress (which I really love, btw), though I've never used an aeropress with an "espresso making" pressure release head. I almost bought the Nano but ended up with the Flair instead and I'm happy with my choice. I'd say the Nano is clearly designed for those who like camping/hiking and so on (all advertising is geared towards those consumers as well). The Flair is portable, but only to an extent (hotels/luggage-style travel), whereas the Nano would be great if hiking/backpacking with a a Peak One stove or something. That being said, my hiking/camping days are mostly over (except for 1-2 times per year, if that) so I also wouldn't be able to make much use of it. People who are outdoors a lot would love its weight/portability.

    Thanks for the Video , but you made the same mistake that James did , there are two factors that really elevate nanopresso , one is the barista kit , which comes with 16g baskets for double shots , a more consistent tamper and large water tank for back to back shots or lungos , also you have the ability to de-pressurize the unit , very easily , which combined with the double shot basket , that's where Nanopresso shows it's qualities

    • @Sprometheus
      @Sprometheus  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s fine, but I don’t think using it as designed from the factory should be considered a mistake.
      I do believe that those things will make a better shot, but if so what does that say about the standard unit? Shouldn’t it be sold that way if it truly makes the machine that much better? In my mind the mistake lands upon Wacaco for not putting their best foot forward from the start and leaving it to the user to modify or buy more accessories to get it to work at its best. Just my two cents on that.

      @@Sprometheus oh , absolutely , no doubt about it , also i didn't mean any disrespect , you are one of my favorite coffee channels in youtube , and i have learned a great deal from you , choosing the word "mistake" was my mistake :D
      i agree that the unit should come as a complete package , but i also get why they don't do it that way , first and foremost is the price ( both me and my friend who bought Nanopresso a few years ago , the price was one the more important selling points about it ) also their default costumers are non coffee geeks , but it does provide options for coffee geeks too which is really good
      my argument ( if you can call it that ) was that since james has already done a review of the unit and one of it's accessories ( pod Adopter ) you had a opportunity to go the other direction .
