I like how you clarify that nonverbal doesn't mean no sound. "She's a pretty noisy kid." Awesome montage of her various sounds in different context.

Seriously... the people who disliked this video has no heart whatsoever and no interest in the subject matter. Then why click on the video?! If for some (odd, unacceptable) reason you actually truly DON'T like the video, then DON'T CLICK ON IT!! Or turn the video off. This is an amazing family and an amazing channel!! Rant over. Love you guys 💖

You guys are amazing. I work with autistic kids and so many parents have a hard time adopting a lot of these methods. You are doing everything spot on. Very cool to see your daughter learning and I'm sure her frustration and self confidence have improved dramatically.

my son is 8 now and is now able to communicate somewhat, he can say what he wants, basic things like "i want ...". He still makes similar sounds as Abigail, but speech therapy got him from just saying like 5 words to now over 200. He does the echolalia still, and has apraxia, grocery shopping can be stressful with the over stimulation and comments or stares. I love watching these videos and relating to other patents with ASD children. I'm the only one in my family with a special needs child so it does make me feel alone at times because i have nobody to relate to that knows how big of a deal it is to me when he does something new. Stay strong you're awesome patents.

Thank you for sharing this. My wife and I are raising our Grandson. He is 2 now and non verbal so far. We are in the beginning stages of therapy as he was just officially diagnosed. I will admit it is very frustrating and heart wrenching on a daily basis trying to decipher what he wants. Please keep posting. I need to be reminded there is light at the end of the tunnel.

This is one of my favorite informational videos so far. I'm fairly new, so have seen a lot of more recent videos in the past few months and am now binge watching from the oldest videos on. It is amazing to see the growth in Abbie over the past few years of videos! I love the respect, teamwork, sense of humor, positivity, and love of your family.

Great video ! I’m a designer and I focused my final project on Sensory Toys for children on the autism spectrum. I have a nephew who, just like your daughter, is on the spectrum and is non verbal too. He’s 7 now. I agree when you say that even though we believe we can work on their way to speak, we might also accept the possibility that they won’t and we have to prepare them to the world. So I’m starting to study for my grad focusing on non verbal communication using apps. Your channel was really an awesome find! Thank you

Great video! I love the videos! Good job Abby! As I am a nonverbal person who also has autism I find your videos inspiring :-) my being nonverbal came about in mid-late 2014 (age 23 for me) but really went into high gear earlier this year. The doctors really don't know why :-( I (with the help of my nonverbal colleagues from my volunteer call center job) strung together communication systems (including vocalizations, iPad, and pointing) as you've done with Abby. Thus there's even hope for me at 23 going on 26 and counting. Keep up the great work!

FatheringAutism that was by design. I along with being nonverbal and autistic, am transgender (male-to-female) and one day myself and my team (of my closest friends and colleagues) were doing searches online for heaven only knows what but the words "nonverbal" and "children" were somewhere in the search query. As if by divine intervention we found a video on the Carly Grace Fleischmann you reference. I was so inspired that my team recommended that I "name myself in her honor". In Early 2017 the name change was approved by a judge. I take great honor in sharing my hero's complete name (reference Carly's letter to Ellen as shared in the book where she says "...my name is Carly Grace Fleischmann..."
She has become such an inspirational figure in my office we just refer to her as "CF" and we are quoting her a lot internally at trainings and the like

FatheringAutism yes, it's pretty cool and it looks like I was mistaken it was Larry King not to Ellen the letter was to. Ironically she was born sometime in January 1995, I was born in January 1991. I don't know if you have done a video on "sensory overload" or not in the past (I'm new here) but if you haven't, there's a suggestion for you to explore it and give the world perspective on how you, your family, and Abby deal with these types of events

Thank you very much for touching upon various subjects regarding nonverbal Autism. I am looking to start a Tour Company that is Accessible Travel based for people with disabilities so they can travel abroad with their Parents or other traveling companion. I have a certificate in Assistive Technology and the DynaVox T10 and DynaVox Compass is a very good AAC device.
Abigail is very cute and I know she has a lot to say. If you work with her on a communication device she can learn to express herself and the aggression can be less. If you look up Kreed's World on TH-cam there are videos on Communication Devices(sadly Kreed passed away this past May There are so many resources available to Abigail.

I absolutley love this vlog! 3 of my 4 asd children have significant speech delay and my 5yr old is non verbal. We use a couple of different apps, proloquo2go and PECS. They have mastered PECS and we are currently introducing proloquo2go which will broaden their language hopefully. We also use ALOT of keyword sign/ gestures. Not everyone knows our kids signs either which can make it tricky but it’s what works for us so we try to encourage the iPad apps usage as much as possible.

Heheh. Judging by the edit and the little figurine behind you, would I be correct in guessing that Star Wars is a favourite of yours?
Never give up on Abby's speech. You all put in so much effort into her care that she will always progress to newer achievements and milestones.
One of the ASD students in our multi-category classes started off non-verbal AND from a non-English speaking background. The teachers aides celebrated when he swore in his family's native language!
He's about to start his final year of high school (school year starts at the end of January in Australia), and whilst he may not connect with language the same way we do, he still uses his words. He will go up to people and say "Good morning [person], how are you [person]?" (not always waiting for responses). If you ask a question he can give single word or phrase answers, and is constantly encouraged to use more language and full sentences. He has very good manners and I believe he has an iPad based non-verbal communication system too.
Being able to use tablets and apps for non-verbal communication seems MUCH more customisable and cheaper than the old button speech boards! Though like the lady who taught us teachers about special needs devices out there reminded us they would still be useful for people without the fine motor skills to use an iPad (heck, it's only in the last couple of years that I myself have mastered the art of using a touch screen device without accidentally opening half a dozen other things in the process. Now it only happens about twice a day :D ).
Does Abby show creativity (or at least interest) in drawing, or painting or whatever medium she is able to use?
Do you ever use respite care, or do you count a couple of hours whilst Abby is at therapy/otherwise as respite?
Are Harley Davidsons over-rated or are they really the coolest bike out there? If not, what is your favourite?
Do you think it would be possible to use Abby's voice for her non-verbal communication if you had the tools to make her voice from her sounds? I don't know, I think I've watched too many sci fi cartoons or something.
Does Isaiah have any issue with bringing his girlfriend over to meet Abby, or is it too early into the relationship to worry about whether either girl will have a meltdown upon first meeting.
It blows my mind how kids can develop understanding about concepts such as ownership and love and social cues, so I can't imagine having to think about how they happen in order to explicitly teach them to someone with a brain who doesn't naturally "get" such weird abstract human concepts.

    • @fatheringautism
      @fatheringautism  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

+Cee Kay You would be correct. Isaiah and I are pretty much sci-fi nerds. Priscilla Hayes Star Wars (I found out after we were married...)
Abbie struggles a bit with tablets because of all the menu and app choices on the screen. We use a Samsung tablet now because they come with "Kid Mode" which limits it to a single home screen and large icons for her favorite apps. She has spent money before by tapping away on in-app purchases so we learned to limit her access for for fiscal sanity. Lol

    • @ceekay3143
      @ceekay3143 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Oh wow, how lucky is that that Priscilla loves her Star Wars? You should get her that talking Chewbacca mask :D
I'm glad the Samsung tablet has 'kid mode', that does make it easier. There is a way to put parental controls so that nothing can be bought in an app store without a code or something. You can see exactly how much I know about that. Apps LOVE to make you try to spend money in them for sure.
Hope your winter isn't too cold. I'm sweating through this Australian summer. Tomorrow is meant to get up to/over 38C (100F and change). Not a good time to be trying to pack to move to a new area to teach at a new school.

I am wondering about sensory processing disorder. Does Abbey have issues w that or does anyone else in the family have sensory issues? my understanding of autism is growing. for me I believe that I have sensory processing disorder and something to do w information processing disorder. The so called autism specialist that saw me this week had not even looked at my records prior to seeing me in his office so no news there. go back in 30 days. luckily my capd test is at the end of the month and I see a Neuro psych at the end of Feb. I just want to understand what is what. The more we can learn the more we can share and help. Thanks for putting it all out here.

    Hi,
Do you think Isaiah have had to grow up faster when Abigail came along due to her greater need of attention from you as parents?
Do you think he has missed out on some things or has he been "supportive" and "joined the ride" during his childhood?
Im sorry if the sentences makes no sence, english is not my first language, but I hope you get it...
    Thanks for great videos!

+diggidan I certainly feel Isaiah has had to grow up faster due to his sister's disability. He is as much a third caregiver as a brother for Abigail. It's not the first thing I'd pick as a relationship between siblings but it still works. At the end of the day he is still her big brother.

So I see a lot of work being done on getting her to communicate what she wants. It seems like so many people are working tirelessly to ensure that everyone is able to cater to her every whim....when she wants a cookie or a drink or a chip or a raisin.... why not more work on getting her to be a contributing memeber of society. Like teaching her communication skills focused on being able to accommodate others, as much as herself? What about doing work on "accepting no?" Do you do that? If she wants a cookie, do you every just say no? Even if it causes a meltdown? I've watched other videos where she runs away in grocery stores and lays in the middle of isles... but i didn't see any type of discipline.... just redirecting her. Do you ever worry that not making her accountable for potentially dangerous behaviours will bite her in the butt one day? Running away like that / attempting to escape can be pretty dangerous if she suddenly bolts into a road one day. Is there any type of accountability or discipline? I'm not being confrontational, just genuinely curious.

+Rebecca Austin Most of her requests result in a "no" response. The introduction of communication has to result in highly reinforcing items to encourage that communication so it can be taught later on for more than just "I want" situations. Baby steps. You really need to watch more videos. There are videos of her folding clothes, doing dishes, vacuuming, putting laundry in the wash. She is a part of the lunch crew and puts her classmates lunches on trays for them. She picks up the living room at home and is in charge of putting shoes away in the shoe closet. She doesn't respond to discipline. Watch the Autism Timeout video. A pop on the butt or hand is also ineffective. Positive reinforcement for all humans autistic or not is a more effective means of curving behavior. It's scientifically and clinically proven. I hope that helps shed some light.
