    Well, the storyline before 2006 was a retired pirate bought a mansion in New Orleans, but nobody knew he was a pirate. Eventually he got a girlfriend, but he told her to stay out of the attic, because that’s where he kept all his pirate stuff. Anyway, right before their marriage, she went up to the attic. In fear of her telling the public, he threw her out the window. In shock of what he just did, he hung himself. So when you fall out the window, you are supposed to relive the brides death.

      I know of another movie with this exact plot line and I can't remember what it is - except in the attic is another bride

      IT'S JANE EYRE. In Jane Eyre, Mr. Rochester keeps his insane wife Bertha in the attic and Jane finds Bertha right before Jane and Rochester's wedding. Bertha then sets fire to the mansion and throws herself out of the window. Luckily though, Rochester and Jane live on.

    Didn't they use to give you a death certificate when you left the ride? I always thought the whole point of the mansion was each visitor was a ghost. That's what made it different and special.

      As I understood, if you asked at the beginning of the ride, you could get one at the end. I don't know when this was suppose to be a particular thing. I would think the 1980s or early 1990s for WDW could be a fair guess The Information I've found says now, it might happen if the cast knows it's a child's first ride or a newlywed couple or such is riding. You can get one at www.doombuggies.com. But I remember actually being at Disney World once and someone mentioning it.

      They use to give death certifcates if you ask a worker there when the ride is over, but people asked for them so much that they get rid of them. Them will give you a small post like card of mickey and pluto as the characters of the caretaker and his dog the words on the card say "Haunted Mansion Honorary Caretaker" on a grave.

      The death certificate was also give out at DL HM but was discontinued after word got out about them. In the ride itself you can here a woman at the very end asking you to "Hurry back" and "Don't forget your death certificate."

    One of the worst problems in theme park design is how to explain why there's tourists in Mickey Mouse shirts crawling all around the jungle, the old west, etc. The genius of the Haunted Mansion was to put a lampshade on it. Instead of playing pretend (e.g.: the original Fantasyland dark rides which pretended that you are Snow White or Peter Pan or Mr. Toad), it just straight up accepts that you are a tourist who is visiting a haunted mansion. The mansion has a ghostly tour guide who shows you around the place, and it is your "sympathetic vibrations" as a guest that make the ghosts materialize. The Haunted Mansion has no explanation beyond the obvious fact of you being a tourist in a haunted mansion. It's brilliant.
    The Indiana Jones Adventure and Twilight Zone Tower of Terror do this to, by directly addressing YOU, as the guest. The worst rides all seem to ignore your very existence and just give you vignettes of somebody else's adventure (Ariel, Nemo, Jack Sparrow).

    • @dfor
      @dfor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Same thing with the Rock N Rollercoaster in Hollywood Studios. In the queue there is a big room you can look into (really just a screen with good depth of field distortion) that looks like you are looking into their sound stage and there is an intro to the ride explaining your part in the experience. It's pretty cool.

    the death theory still makes sense if you take madam leota’s seance into account. she’s the real first ghost you see and she summons all the others to show themselves, being someone with that power she should be able to make herself appear to the living like she can make other ghosts appear. they try to scare you until you fall - or descend, which can still mean fall - and then they accept you and party with you. totally plausible!

  • @frostypinesanimation
    @frostypinesanimation 6 ปีที่แล้ว +515

    I always really liked the Death Theory. There's a few holes, but the story of HM is already so all over the place it doesn't seem to matter. It's almost like how in the old fantasyland dark rides you wouldn't SEE the main character because you ARE the main character. The whole Mansion is focused on YOU.

    • @LordofFullmetal
      @LordofFullmetal 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      The crash doesn't have to be you dying, though. Getting thrown out a window is a much more obvious indicator of death, and it was the original plan for the ride while they were drafting.

    Fun Fact: The Haunted Mansion already has a 1000th happy haunt.
    In October of 2004, Disneyland hosted a charity auction for the Boys & Girls Club of Anaheim. Disneyland posted an online auction, giving fans a chance to become immortalized in the Haunted Mansion as its 1000th resident. When the eBay listing ended on October 21st, Cary "Jay" Sharp of Baton Rouge, Louisiana was the winner, placing a bid of $37,400. The medical doctor and health-care attorney won a spot in Disneyland's Haunted Mansion, as well as a donation for his local Baton Rouge chapter of the Boys & Girls Club.

    This might just be semantics, but... if you fall, you're still descending. The dictionary definition of "descend" is this: "move or fall downward.", keyword being fall. So, in essence, the death theory is still very much plausible! I always liked that particular theory, as it really gives us more sort of lore to latch on to, even if it's just fan lore rather than canonically confirmed.

  • @briancomiskey9824
    @briancomiskey9824 6 ปีที่แล้ว +256

    How about...the hearse out front is your hearse...you enter the mansion and go down the elevator...which represents going 6 feet under. (He may say foolish mortal because youre dead...but he knows you're not?...maybe?) You walk through a hallway...represents going through a tunnel...you come to the end and start to ride...or float? You check out the atmosphere a while..see if it's worthy of staying there. Madam Leota does the seance..which keeps you between this realm and the next. The other spirits recieve your sympathetic vibration because now, you're in the same state as them. You can now see them "properly". You finish the tour of the retreat and float down to the yard and mingle through the party. You exit...rather enter... into a crypt. (Looks like one to me) The ghost follows you home because you ARE home. That last room is your room at the mansion. When you rise out of your room, the lady says hurry back. The way she says be sure to bring your...death certificate (then laughs knowingly) is because youre already dead. Youre floating up out of the mansion...to haunt your friends or enemies? I know it's not right but it's fun to think about.

      The ghosts are not malicious though, if they actually wanted to kill us they would have just killed us and not gone through all this effort with throwing a party to try and sell the idea of becoming a ghost to us. And secondly the ghost host makes it clear that this a place for happy haunts, spirits who are there of their own free will. if they killed us then we would not be very happy and just be a real downer for all the other ghosts.
      The whole story of the Haunted mansion is that it's a retirement home for all the worlds spirits and that the ghost host is trying to sell the idea of becoming a ghost to you. It's why he invites you into the mansion, gives you a tour and has the other ghosts throw a huge party for you. Murdering you in cold blood is not a very good sales pitch.

    I think you don’t really start to see ghosts until you participate in a seance. During this seance, you have a 1 in 3 chance of the ride breaking down right in this spot. When the ride resumes, you discover that the hat box ghost is none other than... ...Jean Lafitte!

    • @crazysingingchick
      @crazysingingchick 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      BlueLily Paints what crazysingingchick says is truth. The 1 in 3 chance of the ride breaking down though is a joke, as all “lights on” evacuation videos seem to start in this room. I’ve never had it break down on me before, but most times when I ride it, it slows way down in this room. The majority of the time it actually stops, and we’re told to remain seated as the ride will resume. This happens for only a few seconds thankfully, but it’s still very odd that it’s always in this room. The Jean Lafitte being the hatbox ghost is just a fan theory, but also a joke, since the infamous pirate is a running gag on this channel.

    • @Alyraynor
      @Alyraynor 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      BlueLily Paints when I was on the HM it also broke down but twice once at the graveyard for about 15 minutes and the ride kept going, and the second was in the dark corridor on a turning ramp and we sat in pitch black for about 10 minutes! Super spooky

    If you listen to the story record released in promotion for the haunted Mansion opening it says the characters climb a staircase out of the attic to the cemetery to escape, that's why there are railings on the decline. Tbh, I never liked this theory anyway, I never thought the ghosts would be acting malicious. I always thought they were trying to test you, to see if you were brave enough to invite you into their home. Great video thank you for doing your research.

      To be fair though, the imagineers clearly think the ghosts are malicious. They explicitly say in one of their early drafts, the ghosts were one hundred percent meant to be throwing you out the window. It was supposed to copy the death of one of the ghosts. Since the other person died from being thrown out that window, it's pretty safe to suggest the fall was also supposed to kill YOU.

  • @bean_master6962
    @bean_master6962 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    The throwing out of the window actually represents 1 of 4 stories Ken Anderson created. (Walt put Ken in charge of creating the haunted mansion). The story goes there was a sea captain who married Constance Hatchaway. Their wedding day he told her not to go in the attic, well she did. She found out that he was a Notorious sea captain. Afraid she might tell the town the captain threw her out of the window. In which she comes back and haunts him until he takes his own life. This sea captain has a name but I don’t know how to spell.

      In the very first drafts of the Haunted Mansion, when they were still moving forward with the Captain Gore story, he was the one hung from the rafters. After the Pirate story got put to rest, though, they changed the hanging body to that of the Ghost Host, even though it isn't explicitly stated.

    I don't know, man. The wording in that official story is pretty ambiguous. We "make our escape" (from the Mansion or from life?) and "descend" to the graveyard (intentionally or by falling?). I could buy the theory. You're right that a few ghosts are visible before the descent but they're definitely less antagonistic once we're in the graveyard.

    • @megelizabeth9492
      @megelizabeth9492 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Personally I like the theory that you are already dead before you walk-in. You are a ghost looking for a good place to happily haunt in peace, and luckily for you, you just happened to be in the Haunted Mansion, the premier retirement home for spooks and spirits from all around the world. The Ghost Host gives you a tour, but you can’t properly see them until madam Leota’s seance, which gives them a more physical form. Now you can see them throwing a party in your honor.

  • @kylefrank638
    @kylefrank638 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I mean, I always took the Ghost Host's words to mean exactly what you're saying: That the only way out is to die. But I had never considered the whole thing about how, the last time you seem to truly be inside the mansion is in the attic with the bride and Hatbox Ghost, and then you do seem to be "falling" through the trees to the ground (it's not 'almost vertical', but, whatever), and a red-eyed raven is indeed the very next thing you see, which kind of symbolizes death in the past, present and future. The groundskeeper and his dog though, they seem to be frightened of the cemetery, not you, judging by their placement. By the time they're facing you, your Doom Buggy is practically already past them, facing you in a new direction, so... Cool theory, not perfect, but cool.
    Also, how awful is it that the book detailing Haunted Mansion's story completely forgets the THIRD ghost in the attic, who's also MY FAVORITE? The shadowy piano player! He's the best, and they don't even mention him! ;-;

    Maybe the ghost host kills you in the stretching room just painlessly he says "there are no windows and no doors and you must find a way out but of course there;s always my way" his way could be killing you which lets you transcend through the wall into the loading area

    story of the Phantom Manor in Disneyland paris (please make a video of it)
    Phantom Manor tells the story of Henry Ravenswood (1795), a man who became rich in the mining industry in the town of Thunder Mesa. From all the gold he found in Big Thunder Mountain, he built Ravenswood Manor, a Victorian country house on the top of Boot Hill, just opposite Big Thunder Mountain. He founded a family with his wife Martha (1805) and had a daughter named Melanie (1842).
    A local Indian tribe, driven by the inhabitants of the village of Thunder Mesa, said that Thunderbird was deep in Big Thunder Mountain. Thunderbird would be a powerful Indian god that protects Big Thunder Mountain. Legend has it that Thunderbird when he hits his wings can cause thunder, lightning and earthquakes. But Henry Ravenswood did not believe those stories. Time passed and the gold in Big Thunder Mountain slowly increased, causing the miners to search deeper for gold. Melanie changed from a young girl into an adult woman and met a train driver. They became engaged and the train driver promised Melanie to travel with her from Thunder Mesa, to the great envy of Henry who tried to stop the wedding. But his plans did not work out, when in 1860 the miners of Big Thunder Mountain got to deal with the rage of Thunderbird and Big Thunder Mountain was simultaneously hit by thunder, lightning and an earthquake. The disaster cost the life of Henry Ravenswood and his wife and the family nothing more was heard until the truth came after a long time under the rubble.
    The only people in the family who survived the earthquake were Melanie and her fiancé. Their wedding day had arrived and it promised to be a special day. But nothing turned out to be less true. A phantom called "Phantom" appeared in front of the house. He approached the future groom and lured him to the attic. The groom could have stayed there better, because before he knew it he was hanging on a noose that was attached to one of the beams. In the meantime Melanie waited hours in the ballroom. She was left alone with the housekeepers and butlers. She told herself that he would still show up. That's why she always kept her wedding dress and her bouquet with her. To be prepared for the return of her groom she sang a melody of lost love.
    Phantom still wandered through the house and laughed at Melanie for her wailing. He invited his friends from the underworld to party forever in the ghost villa. The shape of the house was slowly changed by the malevolent forces that entered the house. Years passed and all corners of the house were filled with cobwebs and dust. Rumor had it that Melanie had lost her mind. She walked through the house year-in-year and still sang the same song for her, while ghosts and demons danced around her. Everywhere she walked she was reminded of the wedding. The house was slowly surrounded by weeds and dead plants. Melanie always kept hoping that her lover would ever return and never thought why he would have left.
    The rubble of the earthquake caused the old Thunder Mesa to turn into a ghost town. Because of its appearance it got the nickname "Phantom Canyon". The dark version of the city was never inhabited by other people, and the old inhabitants have never returned.
    Until today no one knows if Melanie Ravenswood is still alive. If she were still alive she would be over 100 years old. Her singing and wailing, however, when it is dark and the full moon shines, can still be heard in the city. But also the malignant laughter of Phantom can be heard. Whether Melanie is alive or not, it is certain that she never left her family home and is still waiting for her future.
    Many fans of the attraction believe that the Phantom ghost is the father of Melanie, looking for revenge from his grave. Other people believe that it would just be an expression of pure evil. During the masterclass on the 20th anniversary of Disneyland Paris, however, Tony Baxter also wore the groom as Phantom. Who in turn wanted to take the bride to her death, so that they could still marry.

    @dan5660 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yeah, I definitely got this impression as a 7 yr. old the first time back in the day(early '80's). The "psychological" design of this ride was a masterpiece of it's time(1969)- similar to a Vincent Price horror film of the same period. Because once inside the stretching room, and the host reveals his "only way out"(by hanging) spiel, even as a 7 yr. old(the first time) I had the real impression I might not make it OUT of here alive(LOL). Even later in the attic scene, the pop-up spooks(until they were removed) seriously had one on edge along with the heartbeat in background. Only later in the graveyard scene did Disney allow a more lighthearted/spooky experience.

Anybody else? Okay maybe I just love this ride too much lol Great video as par usuall. Keep up the great work! :)

    I heard that you die as you are falling out and the ghosts 👻 singing along in the graveyard that you see don't look transparent anymore cause you are one of them, but wait, you end up getting hitchhiking ghosts 👻 as you leave, so if you were one of them, wouldn't you be unable to leave cause now you join them? so where would the hitchhiking ghosts 👻 follow to then or how could they follow you home if you are dead like them? if you were still alive as in the storyline, then that might be understandable, but if you're dead after going out the attic door, then wouldn't you be unable to leave and be one of them and become the 1000th spirit? therefore the hitchhiking ghosts 👻 wouldn't need to have a ride with you cause you wouldn't be leaving anywhere, it's just very confusing 😕 to me when I think of it.

    • @elsie8757
      @elsie8757 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, that's the most confusing thing about the theory tbh. "The only way to escape the mansion is to die... at which point you become a ghost and thus end up not leaving the mansion anyway". I mean after all, isn't that the function of the Haunted Mansion? To serve as a place for ghosts to hang out when they have nowhere else to go?

    • @LordofFullmetal
      @LordofFullmetal 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      See, here's the problem with the logic you're using: they never actually SAY that you can't leave if you die. In fact, they suggest the opposite several times. They say you can only leave if you die, they talk about the ghosts following you home, they say IF you want to join them you have to return with a death certificate. It's very heavily implied that dying does NOT mean you become the 1000th ghost automatically.

    Nice theory but...as you leave the Haunted Mansion you come across a miniature Madam Leota who says, "Come back, come back and don't forget to bring your death certificate." Inferring that you aren't dead... yet but, you can always come back if you have proof that you are truly dead.

    • @LordofFullmetal
      @LordofFullmetal 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      How does that infer that you aren't dead? If you died during the ride you won't HAVE a death certificate yet; you don't get those until someone finds your corpse and the government gets everything organised. That doesn't mean you're not dead until it's printed. Also, they used to give you death certificates at the end of the ride if you said a specific word.

    Haunted mansion brings me great joy and to hear more theories about it fires up my imagination and it lights my fascination aflame.The magic of the HM is the flexibility of the story. It changes from one story to another. I loved the Thunder and I think its such a shame about the dog.I am a dog lover and overall a lover of all animals. I wish I could party all the time but i attend so few. Not a lover of the drink so I'm not missing out anything I suppose. Anyway your videos are wise,witty and enlightening. Thank you for the rare gems of information you give. It takes a lot of courage to be a blogger but don't be Paul Frees only be yourself.You make Disney theories enjoyable!

      Very good points, but Mr.TPMVids on his TPMVids 2019 Things on Haunted Mansion Disney World tries doing a Paul Frees intro, and he does a good job!
