I much prefer the old fairground rides over the modern thrill rides. They just felt like much more fun as they're rickety with minimal harnessing. Modern rides strap you in so you can't move which takes the thrill out of it for me.
Remember The Caterpillar in the sixties. Anyone remember the revolving house, the jet roundabout where you could make them climb or fall - or the little coach in which small kids could be taken on a ride around the park? Ah, wonderful Dreamland!
It was, rather simply, called Racing Coaster. I read it was sadly demolished in 1974 owing to apparent lower park attendances, as foreign travel was getting more popular. I didn’t visit the park until July 1977 and only the Scenic Railway survived by then.
Love how everyone on the rides all wave to the crowd and no seat belts worn…you can just feel the real fun atmosphere of the time…unlike the ‘sterile’ parks of today…
Bless look at them all waving their hats on the coaster may they all rest in peace
Amazingly clear footage ! Brilliant piece of history!
Brilliant . I note some rides are likely prototypes of rides we know today . Some of those would still be considered a "thrill ride" even now.
Great little film of Dreamland.
With sound too!
This is the first decent footage I have seen of The Caterpillar.
What can I say realy wonderful, where have all those lovely memories gone. All the people are enjoying their self's not like today I am sorry to say.

Wonderful, thanks. Much as I remember Dreamland a few year later.
When the Fair really was Fun……🙂
Fun Fact: You can still ride that roller coaster! It's the Scenic Railway at Dreamland in the UK
I'm 22, but I wish i saw the 1920s and 1930s rides like these. What are the rides at 1:46 and 2:28 in the video?
The " Cuddle Up" and Caterpillar.
Dreamland Margate Funfair footage.
Loved it, great footage.Anyone know what that duelling coaster was called ?
