I believe I'm gaining a hyperobsession for circus out of nowhere. Most of my life, I was offput by it or bored. Yet now I admire the whole culture and traditions of that lower layer of society. Did you know many troupes had their own priests? These weren't just random degenerate grifters. These men and women worked their butts off to entertain and show people wonder.

@@seronymusoh my god this word grifter, people are using it like oxygen lol but anyway travelled with a circus when I was 8-years-old absolutely amazing experience so many amazing traditions that no one knows about and so many stereotypes that aren't true concerning the animals. The performers don't eat until after the evening show because if they have to go to hospital they may need anaesthetic which you can't have ,with food in your stomach. Marrying a non-circus person is usually forbidden because everybody has to have a skill . Most families have a speciality that they passed down through the family . Also the circus people are extremely protective of all the kids from other performers they all act like one big family especially when the show's on to make sure everyone safe I absolutely loved the whole

My grandfather Michael Ragone was a acrobatics in Baraum Bailey circus in the 1920s. We have original pictures & journals.
He first went into it with his 2 step brothers & they called them selves the "Ferraro brothers" & later years my grandfather Separate from his brothers & became a clown & had a woman partner, that do not know her name. A little while doing that, my grandmother did not like the fact he was traveling with a young pretty woman,
So it became my grandfather Michael Ragone & my grandmother Jenne (Joann) Ragone.
I think when they where the Ferraro brothers, then had like a 30 sec. Part in the silence movie called Sally the sea saw 1925( I don't think I got the movie name right? Sorry.
This part of family history amazes me!!.

“[A] herd of ponderous pachyderms” - love that piece of commentary about the elephants. Live animal acts (other than domestic animal ones) are prohibited in most countries now - I suppose there are aspects about how such animals are housed/transported that mean the bans make sense but no one is going to tell me the lives of such circus animals were just plain miserable - some circus “historians” say you couldn’t get a good performance from animals - such as the elephants in this video - unless they were happy and well looked after.

I am 58 years old, and I miss the circus and midway sideshows. A few midway side shows still existed in the late 1970s when I was young, most at State fairs, and I miss them. That great sideshow banner art. The clowns, working acts, (for example tattooed marvels, etc.) and "freaks" were smarter than people today; they became rich, supported themselves, and created a form of "family" being around similar people. Now it is seen for free in your local Wal-Mart. Lol.🤣

Every single time there has to be some ignorant young female who thinks she knows everything about circus life because she's stereotypes because that's easier than thinking. You try and make an elephant do anything that it doesn't want to do and you will have serious issues . I was at a circus, saw the elephant in the very large enclosure called out its name it came over to the fence and started dancing for me so don't tell me that this is done by torture that is a load of crap . Also the story books stereotype of the little circus cage they're travelling in they don't live in those cages there simply to take them from one place to another much like a dog in a car you don't say oh my god that dog lives in the car do you

I hate that a bunch of animal rights wackos have largely ended the use of big cats and elephants in the circus. And fear of liability has cut back the more daring acrobatic acts. So, what do you have left? A bunch of clowns. No one wants to pay to see that, so circuses are dying.

Don't listen to all the people that tell lies I've travelled with a circus and see how they train the animals and they do it bit by bit they pick up on skills the animals already have and try to get them to do do them as a routine after a short time they know exactly what to do . And with animals they prefer to know what they're doing if they're going round in a circle they're happy it's only when something different happens that they get upset. Unfortunately the animal rights groups will tell you that they are tortured and all this sort of thing so that they can raise money which is extremely rare. The circus I travelled with was so protective of the animals if anybody had hurt them in any way they wouldn't have pulled out a gun they love the animals so much just loving your cat or dog
