I adore this movie! Never get tired of watching fantastic acting, and everyone in this movie is outstanding, especially Lemmon. What talent to cram in one movie!

+ ciroalb3 James Cagney's talent was not so special, at least according to him from an interview, he just worked and worked hard, and showed up, and didn't play around with a bunch of meditating, as he put it, "You read the script and understood what the producer wanted and went and did it, that's all, you just did it"... Cagney was a tap dancer and worked hard at being good at that the scene where he is walking, excuse me, dancing, down the steps of the white house is precious, phenomenal, and legitimate. The late Will Geer said, "Gable (Clark Gable) was tough but Cagney was tougher"... James Cagney one of the greatest actors ever!

What is sad is so few actors today have that same drive to work hard and show up. Back in those days if an actor didn't show up they would find someone else and darn quick too. So James Cagney turned out to be the farmer he always wanted to be only the crop was, and is, inspiration!
They had to do this scene something like ten times because Cagney kept cracking up seeing Lemon's reactions. One of the very best films of all time, comedy, drama, a bit of a documentary, as well....
I noticed that Cagney seemed to be playing the character a little more awkwardly & creepy in this scene than in others … also, Cagney seemed to slow his delivery a bit with longer pauses in-between exchanges (adding to the uncomfortable situation for Lemmon's character) - I bet James had a little fun with Jack there and improving the characterization too

must see cagney as admiral halsey in the gallant hours... a war movie and only one body is shown and all the combat is off camera..has to be my favorite to watch..
Dear Fellow Fans and of the late Jack Lemon, This has to be one of the funniest skit parts ever and Cagney and Lemon Play it perfect. I have a copy of this film given to me by the old gentleman who played the Guitar for this movie, and countless others, the late Alton R. (Al) Hendrickson who passed away in 2008. Mr. Hendrickson gave it to me because I could do both James Cagney and a bit of Jack Lemon but I do Cagney better. Te looks on these two faces and the teasing Henry Fonda does to Jack with all that "Yes Sir" and saluting would cause anyone to bust up laughing! This is one of my all time favorites bar none! "How's come I haven't seen you around much Mr. Pulver?" ..... "Wwwell I'm mostly down in the laundryroom, uh uh si sir" How long have you been aboard this vessel Ensign Pulver?" " Si Six months Sir",.. SIX MONTHS!" Beautiful! and playing it back in my head even as we speak and have a big smile on my face and some great memories, for which I want to say thank you to moazam, (Moazam Javaid), javaid for putting this up. 4 films legends in one film, this does not happen very often, sadly this would be the last film that William Powell would ever make, but at least it was his choice and he had a very long life after this.
This was Henry Fonda's dream project, but Lemmon & Cagney both stole the movie from him. The great thing was that Cagney's Captain Morton was so awkward & creepy trying to "nice" and Lemmon's Pulver reacting to it by being totally uncomfortable about it
I served 4 years, Navy, and love this movie. Every part so well played, Ensign Pulver my favorite.
