  • The Sony LX510 is a linear tracking turntable from the early 80's. This is a vlog style video of my personal turntable. It's pretty cool.

    my light bulb has been burned out so not only can i not see the tracks anymore, the size detection feature no longer works. feel like i know which bulb i need, but i'm researching these to learn how to get to the bulb before i open it and i'm just finding nothing. also it's probably a good thing the 45 adapter is metal and not original. the original is plastic and basically a hollow petri dish and subsequently too light, some 45 cutouts will lift the adapter out with it when you remove the record from the platter.

    I have this exact model as well ... My family used it growing up after my parents bought it in the mid-1980's. And I have possession of it now. Its been stored in its box in one place or another for the last twenty-odd years. I am down-sizing for a move right now and I'm looking to sell this (which is how and why I came across this video). It looked pristine as I took it out of its box and fired it up. It spun, but the arm wasn't moving. I'm going to defer to your video and assume it needs a belt and grease! I'm going to try to sell it as-is. We'll see what happens. If it doesn't sell on FB marketplace soon, I'll keep it and look to having it spruced up down the road. Thanks for posting (back in 2018, as it were!)

      I might buy it and make a video about it. I haven't really perfect the arm on mine yet. I can learn from an untouched mechanism.

    I’ve had this turntable since 1984. The power still comes on but the arm isn’t working so I guess I need to get it repaired because I’m never gonna give it up. This was Sony’s first ever linear tracking turntable, new to the industry at that time

      The first thing to check is the belt that drives the tonearm. The rubber will perish and/or lose its tension and the motor that drives the mechanism will just run and run trying to do its job. This should be audible if you listen closely. If the 'table has been sitting a long time, the belt will take a 'set' and will look oblong when removed. This shows up as the tonearm moving over and setting down but not advancing when it is playing (skipping). The belt will work when the tonearm moves at higher speed but slips when playing because of the very small rotations of the motor and the misshapen belt.

    Nice update. I just picked one up the other day. It works fine but the head unit does not move smoothly, making slight thumping noise as it moves forward. It got better when I grease the rode but not perfect. Would it be the pulley inside? Any suggestions?

    I had found one of these in tag sale in my neighborhood back in like 1990. I was so psyched..It worked for a bit, then the arm would get hung up and not slide and then woudl start skipping.

    what grease did you use for the tone arm?

    • @AnalogMedia.
      @AnalogMedia.  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Silicon grease for the tone arm rail and gears. That's all they used originally

    What type of cartridge does it need? Just bought one and it needs a new one.

      It uses a tp4 cartridge, or a p-mount. But today, they're called universal cartridges. You normally can tell by just looking at the plug end of the cartridge.
