No it was the dust on the coping stones! I was engrossed. Are you a plumber too or just lead specialist? I did a lot of leadwork years ago in nmy job as a plumber but not so much these days. Mind you plumbers used to do glazing too I think!

Stone Caps deteriorating /crumbling with 20 years of weather they look like flat stone caps. 20 years does not seem that long for stone to start deteriorating /crumbling. Amazing work Stuart thank you. Different materials I know but wind turbine blades made from fiberglass (I think) have 20 year shelf life (so they say).

Beautiful work as always bud, all that little roof needs now is that ugly felt ripped up and a run of flat decks in its place with t-pren gutters. They will be stepping over your lead multiple times in the future to fix leaks on that old felted roof !

It looks like felt and Grp ! I'm sure around the lantern it's grp ! What I'm hating is flat roofs with lanterns ! Is the product used to make flat roof and up upstands which lantern sits on is done with flat roof system used ! There is no thought about how to change the flat roof when it fails without taking off the lantern!!
Have you got any welding tips? I touched on lead welding on my plumbing course in 2003. Had to do a butt weld, a lap weld, a patch. Then make a pitched lead slate for a 4" soil pipe as an assessment. I did ok at the time (nothing like your work, and blew a few holes in the lead). Wouldn't mind having another play, but not very confident.

Thank you. The oil stops the lead from oxidising when it’s comes into contact with moisture and rain water. If you don’t use it the lead will stain surrounding roof coverings.

Hi Stuart.. ive been watching your vids for a few weeks now and think you do an absolutely fantastic job, not only with your artistic skill in your finished products, but also with your teaching/ instrustional delivery.. altho im no lead dresser or any type of welder, ive become instrested in this since stumbling across your channel, as i'm a general builder and at times do some general roofing work... im teally interested in learning this skill and purchasing the welding gear... i have done some general gas welding ( mild steel ) over 30years ago as an apprentice heavey plant fitter... but thos is a totally different game. Can you recommend/ advise me on gear to purchase or pitfalls of secondhand etc? Is propane a good substitute for acetylene? Best place to buy gear? Do bottles, gauges etc need re-testing ( like my dive cylinders) every few years? Do you need a licence or safe cage etc to store bottles etc (if i remember correctly or maybe im mistaken but around 20+ years ago the laws on storage and private use changed)?? Hi thanks for watching my vids I really appreciate it. Firstly I would stay away from secondhand gear. If you can. I would say you want to make sure you purchase a genuine model o torch. The cheaper versions are never as good and the flame seems to creep. You can get these at the welderswarehouse.com. They also do some pretty decent lead welding kits. With the gas I’ve never tried propane and always use acetylene. You can get this from various places. Boc regularly stock this. You need to open an account and the only drawback is you have to pay a rental on the bottles. I get a size K and oxygen is an E. These are for the portapack. With regards to storage you don’t need any licence as far as I’m aware. You are however supposed to put stickers on your vehicle so that it is clearly visible that your transporting explosive gas. You should also tell your insurance company. Of course your insurance will go up.

Hey, out of interest….is there a minimum over hang of the dressing on the coping stones? Should the lead pass them or can it be cut short so some of the coping stone sides are showing?
Most people want to see the bare minimum to show as much stone profile as possible. I usually try to drip mine around 25mm lower than the flat edge sides

I’m not really sure I just googled the gun and it looks like it’s not going to be ideal for lead welding. You need a model o torch with a number 2 or 3 nozzle. Also oxy reg only wants to be 0.4 bar. Acetylene 1.5 bar.
Thank you. The building paper will help increase the lifespan of the lead. It reduces the contact of alkalis in stone and concrete amongst other things.

I think my biggest tip would be to make sure you’ve got the right kit. Having a decent set up makes it so much easier.

Your bit will be fine but those box gutter arrangements with the parapet walls are an ongoing maintenance issue. You get a bit of variety though.
Yes the house is only 20 years old and I could see that the felt has been changed 3 times.

All this lead shouldn't be necessary
It wasn’t leaking but put onto protect the stones. After 20 years they had started to deteriorate.
@slb lead works thats shocking. Modern rubbish. My 250 year old coping stones are fine, just need re lime pointed every 100 years
