    As someone who grew up with the Commodore C64 I got to say...the SID Chip is missing :D
    But I think the Atari 2600 is closest (and the NES Kirby adventure bass), liking that one the most. I never liked the Ninendo sounds, usually they are very light and "beepy", compared to the very dirty sounds of the C64.
    I like the NES Triangle the least. The NES Sunsoft Bass also sounds kinda cool, but not sure I would like it over long periods. Reminds me of some Mod Music on the Commodore Amiga.

    • @vuurniacsquarewave5091

      But usually C64 songs go for the common route and put the filter on the bass and always produce the same twangy twang with it, even though a 50-25% PWM as the bass has a much dirtier sound. I guess that my SID design philosophy is just different and I prefer the filter being used for other things.

    • @letMeSayThatInIrish
      @letMeSayThatInIrish ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@vuurniacsquarewave5091 Just had to write to say how much I agree. I suppose when we learn how to use the filter, it's too tempting to do that downwards low pass sweep (with max resonance of course!) to make a 'real' synth bass. But most of the time clean pulse at 25% sounds far more interesting. The sawtooth on the SID can also sound great without filter. I want people to use more saw 😄

    I'll always hold a special place for the Genesis bass. That sound is one of my favorite sounds in all of FM synthesis, and for my ears the sound that screams "Yamaha" the most; similar to how a TB-303 screams "Roland". I'm also a sucker for the Kirby bass since KA was one of my favorite games as a kid. That Sunsoft bass is pretty sweet though, don't think I've heard that before.
    And as others have noted, triangle waves are definitely underrated. The sounds you can get when mixing them with other waves has so much more impact than stacking squares or saws.

    Sad C64/SNES are missing, but I appreciate the inclusion of Kirby/Sunsoft since it's interesting to hear things categorized in different ways (most competitions would just compare the default chipsets, and that's less interesting). Also I'm surprised I liked the Genesis most of this group! I wasn't a huge fan of Genesis' chipset, but of this group it definitely sounds best (despite my bias towards chiptune bass!).

      @@2beJT Well (A) I "wasn't a huge fan" which mostly just means I liked other stuff better, and (B) go back and listen to that SOR2 intro track at 0:25, and the annoying buzzer sound is a good example of why the instrument set was limiting. Around that same time SNES had some _fantastic_ soundtracks like FF4, Link to the Past, Axelay, FF6, Super Star Wars. Doesn't mean I don't appreciate the better Genesis tracks (stuff from Sonic, Thunder Force 4, etc), it just means that often when I appreciate those very well-composed soundtracks it's with a slight disappointment they were limited by the instruments of the Genesis (Thunder Force with better guitar samples would've been one of the best soundtracks of its era I think, but with the guitar it had it's a bit "tinny" sounding).
