The surreal experience of flying during the pandemic

  • Demand for air travel has all but evaporated with the arrival of coronavirus. But airlines are still flying. And now, passengers have to wear masks. Here’s what it’s like to take a flight from Washington, D.C. into Atlanta, the world’s busiest airport. Mandatory stay-at-home orders have pushed demand for flying to almost zero, wrecking airline finances. Carriers are parking hundreds of planes anywhere they can, including on a runway at Atlanta. Inside the concourses there, crowds are nowhere near what they were in mid-March, as coronavirus started to shut life down. Most restaurants and shops are closed. On board flights, passengers will find blocked seats, to encourage social distancing. And inflight service consisting of water and snacks stuffed into a plastic baggie, to limit the interaction flight attendants have with fliers. Read more: wapo.st/3fvSwRl. I don’t feel terrible for these greedy airlines who for years have imposed non-sensical and exorbitant fees on passengers like early boarding (mind you several different levels at that), early check in, seat selection, luggage (some even for carryon), different prices for economy and basic economy. Let the go bankrupt. They’re getting bailed out now. They got bailout money years ago when the were struggling because of fuel costs. As a result, they started charging baggage fees to make up ground, but they didn’t stop there. They got too greedy. The sad part is that the rest of the world is following this model too and nickel and diming passengers

Due to lockdown conditions, getting my car back was a process so I had to walk through the airport to sort out the admin to get the car released. The title is misleading. It should be the surreal experience "at airport", not "flying". You're totally mistaken if you think that you'd get more space while flying just because fewer people will be travelling. Nope! Those profit-driven airlines will squeeze most people into smallest space for cost saving, and fly one plane to replace five different planes at different times.

Strange, I took 4 flights with Delta yesterday (May 11) and they were far from empty, I’d say they most of them were close to 2/3 full, which would be a full flight today when you block the middle seats in economy, which Delta is doing. Nor was Salt Lake City International a ghost town in concourses C and D, it certainly wasn’t wall to wall people, but it felt like your typical busy mid sized O&D airport people wise. I even had a little kid in the seat behind me endlessly tapping away at the seat back video screen, being loud, and kicking my seat. So other than having to wear a mask, the bagged snack service, and an empty middle seat, it was just like any other flight.

One thing to note is how so many have seen how much easier web meetings can be, so even when "normal travel" resumes I think there will be fewer passengers. My mom workes in the local government and my dad works in a major engineering company, they both used to travel quite a lot, for conferences, for check-ups, for seminars, and so on. These meetings haven't really stopped during the pandemic, they just went digital. And they both say that their bosses have decided to continue implementing online meetings in the future. The main reason people didn't do it before was simply that it was new, and the old way worked. But now the pandemic has forced people to take the first step, and many won't be taking the step back. Enough travel will return for airports to survive for sure, but I think a large amount of work-related travel will go away.

Ed Bastian looks like he's going to break out crying and sobbing any moment. I can feel his pain. The airline industry was making a killing (pun intended) for the past decade or so raking in billions while packing people in planes like cattle or sardines. Crushing knees and breaking people's faces while laughing all the way to the bank. Taking away value of loyalty points and killign off each and every benefit of traveling by air and turning that into a nightmare on a good day. And then the pandemic happened which brought the airlines to their knees. It will get better....but the airlines, especially the American carriers need to change their ways and treat the customer right or this demand ain't gonna come back for a LONG time!

Experts recommend a self-quarantine for two weeks after flying in a U.S. plane for a few hours.
I wonder how many people actually follow this recommendation.

Use the airlines for trade goods. More people than ever need shipping. Start to convert some of the fleet for logistics.

DGW 404 yea the dream... being forced to leave your home and family to go sit in an empty airport for hours in a uniform talking about nothing with your coworkers for 15$ an hour. Sounds amazing. Rather stay home and start a business
