Despite the 2D personality and cheesiness of him, for some reason Blackwood is one of my favorite movie villains. The dude is such a perfect caricature of Lovecraftian and Poe gothic horror villains that it is almost a love letter to fans of those sub-genres. So well played, too.
He’s played and written well. He’s just straight up evil and f’ed the hell up. Not every villain needs to be three dimensional. Some people out there are just pure evil and aren’t worth reasoning with/sympathizing.
You can also see a strong inspiration on real life occultist Julius Evola on the character (the hairdo, wealthy attire, dark complexion under British standards; the interest in politics and eliticism, the skill with words, the fact that both Blackwood and Evola are noblemen)
Blackwood reading from Revelation in the beginning is the perfect touch. It's almost as if he's implying that he is the Antichrist, who will gain great authority from the devil (the dragon). BTW...the part of the passage Blackwood leaves OUT is equally significant. "And I saw that one of the heads of the beast seemed wounded beyond recovery--but that fatal wound was healed." It's like he didn't want to give EVERYTHING away to Holmes...but the clue is still there.
Sherlock being such an overtly logical character obsessed with control. It only makes sense that the perfect counter is some good old nonsensical lovecraftian horror
Try Charles Stross’s Laundry series, advanced computational methods are gateways to horror Lovecraft never came close to, for example the concept of creating self-aware simulations of minds that can be killed or tortured forever. Oh, and lots of bureaucratic stuff as well.
"Holmes, you must widen your gaze. I'm concerned you underestimate the gravity of coming events. You and I are bound together on a journey that would twist the very fabric of nature. But beneath your mask of logic I sense a fragility... That worries me. Steel your mind, Holmes. I need you." - Lord Blackwood
"Three more will die, and there is nothing you can do to save them. You must accept that this is beyond your control. Or by the time you realize you made all of this possible, it will be the last sane thought in your head." - Lord Blackwood.
Interesting question. In my opinion he could be referring to Holmes over confidence. Which if you look at it is probably the reason why Watson and himself got injured. He underestimated Blackwood.
It still amuses me how Watson was fooled by the supposed "death" of Blackwood. The toxin that was used to fake his death was it able to simulate other death like symptoms? Rigimortis? Did he shit himself?
@@dalsviews5093 Thanks. Idk that it's a plot hole it may have been implied in some fashion. I just want to see the scene where after Blackwood comes back Watson is upset that he failed to realize the roose. "I checked him Holmes, and he had no pulse! He had all the symptoms of rigimortis, and he shat himself!" "The criminal mind will stoop to any low to get what they're after Watson."
If I remember correclty Rigor Mortis doesn't appear instantly after dearh and it takes a few hours to set in. As for the whole 'shitting himself' part I dunno... maybe he was really commited to the role xD
the very first time I saw this and heard the guy say "do you have any final words" I was thinking the phrase from the mummy and hear him say it and i'm like "WHOAH! I CAN TELL THE FUTURE""
I thought his fragility would be Irene Adler. I would think that Irene would be his weak point since he cares a lot about her but won't admit it to himself or anyone else. Though you might be right too. Its a hard one
I thought it was interesting that Blackwood doesn't get all animated and preachy until Sherlock suggests diesecting his brain for science. Obviously this would have exposed Blackwoods plan so he quickly distracts Sherlock from this line of thinking.
Watson [while atesting Blackwood's death]: Have Prof. Moriarty brought here. **Moriarty arrives** Moriarty: Why have I been brought here, Dr. Watson? Watson: **touches Blackwoods aorta** He's dead, Jim.
gotta love it when the villain spells out their plan at the beginning of the movie but the hero is too prideful to believe it another such moment is in Star Wars Episode 2 with Dooku and Obi-Wan
I thought that Mark Strong might have made the voice actor for the Sherlock games (The Testament of Sherlock Holmes, and, Crimes and Punishments), because sometimes they make the character look exactly as the VO. Apparently a certain Charles Swift did his voice but there aren't much to find on that man. (Now don't tell me these two men don't sound alike, many VO are fully capable of changing their voice depending on the characters......they wouldn't be great VO if they couldn't.) It's intense though how much Strong looks alike Sherlock in the game, stunning really, giving that he is usually seen having the exact same haircut as well. He should have played Mr Holmes....I don't even want to watch this movie because of Jr something, never liked the guy....hate me for it.
DEATH IS ONLY THE BEGINNING ! EXCELLENT FILM MASTERFUL THIS IS DEF ONE BEST FILMS IVE SEEN AND PART 2 IM WAITING FOR PART 3 THEY BEEN SAYING ITS COMMIN WHENNNNN
@RushLimborg Yeah, I agree. I'm a Christian myself and I am familiar most of the end time stuff, so with him reading that part of the Bible, I kinda figured all out (more or less)

My favorite part is that it's hiding a character who doesn't believe any of that. It's so great.
Cheesy? Honestly don't remember him being cheesy at all
I love how he looks a little shook when Holmes talks about dissecting his brain. That’s something he didn’t plan for.

Blackwood’s eyes are terrifying when he pops up behind him.
I’m sure Downey peed himself a little right on the set

That's exactly how I interpreted the scene as well.
Wrong
@@Nicksby if he's wrong, then what's right?
Didn't think so.
Stay dead, where you belong.
Nice catch!
Blackwood almost looks like Dracula. In fact, if they ever do a Dracula remake, I vote for Mark Strong to play as Dracula.
Totally agree.
AGREE. but it has to be a real dracula adaptation, based on the book. None of the sparkly teenie-bopper stuff
He does look like a Dracula
"Lord Blackwood, do you have any last words?"
"Death is but a doorway. Time is but a window. I'll be back."
I'm interested in whether there's an parallel character in Arthur Conan Doyle's work to Lord Blackwood. I've only read a few of the original stories.
I’m pretty sure that line is from Ghostbusters 2
Sherlock being such an overtly logical character obsessed with control. It only makes sense that the perfect counter is some good old nonsensical lovecraftian horror
They literally used science not magic
@@thisamazinglife752 Which Holmes could not have deduced unless he conducted that satanic ritual.

His eyes having the white glare and full dark, made me really believe he was demonic
Yeah

That part at 1:49-1:50 where Blackwood slightly drops his head in the shadows is creepy as fuck. You can see an eerie twinkle in his eye O.O
1:49 1:50
I love how Blackwood's theme just cuts off at 3:37. So appropriate.
"Death is only the beginning" is off The Mummy
You and I are bound together on a journey that will twist the very fabric of nature.
That part where he pops up demon like is so well done and badass,I like how the bars make his eyes darker like if he was an actual demon
That music playing is beautiful.
Hans zimmer?
@@luisdeliusa.f.i6732 Yes, it is. On the Sherlock Holmes soundtrack the song is listed as "My Mind Rebels at Stagnation"
@@robertluna3 amazing :)
2:46 Back in the old days the first count alone got you not the noose but burned at the stake.
Victor Orozco Lol blackwood was lucky then
My guess is that because some of his followers control parts of the government, he probably pulled some strings to get hanged instead.
Interesting question. In my opinion he could be referring to Holmes over confidence. Which if you look at it is probably the reason why Watson and himself got injured. He underestimated Blackwood.
I bet if Mark Strong could play Lord Blackwood, in my opinion I think he would be the perfect role for Abdul Gasazi.

He's speaking of Revelation 13:4.

Blackwood looked actually worried when Holmes suggested an autopsy and brain dissection's.
It would have ruined his entire plan.
Definitely appropriate, and spooky as hell

Does anyone know if I can download this video? Can you tell me how or give me a link to do it? Thank you !
What is the music playing in the background
"My Mind Rebels At Stagnation"
@RushLimborg. That was actually a pretty good observation
Thanks!
at 1:42 he turns into the narrator for AHOY. I was waiting for him to tell me about the AK-47
isnt it creepy how when blackwood is talking to holmes, holmes doenst blink? o-o

so blackwood didnt die in this scene did he?

Because Blackwood was thought a practitioner of witchcraft and had no intention of recanting. He was hellbound.
Still loved this film 14 years later
Or the fact that he cares about Watson and Irene, no matter how callous and logical he might try to be.
Kickass music.
Whats the song that goes to this scene?
Omg, it's Archie from Rocknrolla! :D
Credits roll. It was a good film on the whole, but pity it was so short.
