  • This is the start of my mid life crisis Jeep project. Will this channel become a thing? Will this Jeep actually ever run and drive reliably (or not...) again? I have no idea. I'm just an idiot who bought a basket case Jeep and thought someone might be amused by me stumbling through figuring it out.
The story goes that this has been parked in a barn for the past 40 years but receipts say that it may have been running 25 years ago. It has some customizations but is mostly original and almost everything seems to be there.
[April 2021 edit] - The more recent videos on this project are more substantial and less bloggy, so if you are new to the channel and are catching up, it's ok to skim the early videos from while I was still trying to figure things out.
[October 2023 edit] - 18k views after 3 years, wow. I look back at my video style from those days and it was terrible. Editing was all jump cuts, poor audio, talking too much. Glad I figured things out. Newer videos are much better produced.

I would suggest that you pick up a booklet on your Jeep as well as to join a Jeep club which will provide you with reliable contacted to other Jeep owners. This sort of encouragement will help you enjoy your Jeep.

Hello friend . I just found your channel. And like you I got a 1948 cj2a in simular condition. Did a frame up resto the hole nine yards. Almost all stock 4 banger aka go devil and all do your self a favor and look in to Walk's 4 wheel drive thay have every part you need. I went all out on my willys and spent about 10 grand on the resto and now its worth 20. good luck on your willys.

I have seen a whole lot worse than that, you got a good start. Take your time if it takes you several years. Those jeeps are pretty simple to work on. Lot of jeep parts will interchange. Can't wait to see it when you get it done.

That's what I'm afraid of, that it'll take 10 years to get around to all the parts of it like it took 10 years to finish the Bantam trailer that goes with it. And the Bantam had a lot less parts.

Looks like the underside of my CJ3A! Greasy dirt and all.

Good luck with it! Just got a 49 3a and my transfer case looks very much like yours....a shapeless lump of oily sludge. Wondering if I should just hoist the body off and tackle the mess free of clearance issues.

How much did you pay? My retirement project is to get one of these beautiful old Jeeps, fix it, put antique plates on it, and use it for personal transport.

Let's just say I paid too much. Should have been 1500-2000 based on condition, but I was blinded by the want of a Willys jeep and the fact that it was only 30 minutes north of my location... and overpaid by quite a bit.
That's what I'm hoping to do as well, though. Get it running and driving again and go on beer runs, grocery shopping, cruising, etc.

You seem inexperienced with little skills. Before you butcher this Jeep consider passing it along to someone who can restore it properly.

Gotta learn somehow. It's not like this one was a perfect restoration candidate.
