    My commute home with Tesla AutoPilot in the SNOW! With a new enhancement to Autopilot v7.1, it works great in the snow, but it should come with a warning!!

      technically speaking, an arbitrary number of teslas can follow eachother as long as one person is leading the proverbial convoy
      by the time this becomes an issue, autopilot systems will be more than advanced enough to figure out what to do anyway and following another car won't be necessary

      +Van Litespeed In the autopilot mode, you can change how many car lengths you want between your car and the one infront.

    • @bW9taeH4
      @bW9taeH4 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Van Litespeed It's hard to count seconds when the video isn't in real time, but a driver has the option of setting any following distance he wants. It's not autopilot that makes somebody keep a shorter following distance. Most people who fail to keep a safe following distance don't have autopilot.
      It's best to keep a safe following distance no matter what, but the three second rule also factors in reaction time of about a second. The car doesn't need that, so a three second following distance is about as safe as a four second following distance. The car can react instantly, and the truck will have a much longer stopping distance, so the chances of hitting the truck will be minimal. The problem comes when a car gets rear ended because it needs to stop too fast, so relying on autopilot as an excuse to drive too closely is a bad idea.
      But that's all academic because I can't tell from the video what the following distance was.

    • @crosswire7777
      @crosswire7777 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The video was sped up you idiot

      +crosswire7777, you're the idiot. The speed is displayed on the dash. lol

    • @bW9taeH4
      @bW9taeH4 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Based on driver response times, then a two second following distance would be appropriate. The car could handle things even closer than that of course, but a two second following distance wouldn't alter the amount of time the person behind the Tesla had to stop, and avoiding being rear ended is always good.
      Also the fact that it's a tractor trailer is a consideration, but the comment had it backwards. A large truck has a longer stopping distance, and would end up coming to a complete stop from 50 mph several car lengths later than something like a Tesla. So if they both slammed on their brakes at the same time, there would be no collision. On the other hand, being tailgated by a truck is another story.
      Tailgating a tractor trailer with a different car carries risks for a different reason. A driver has less time to react when he can't see the road ahead. The car has no such concern.

    A simple fix should do- their software detects brakelights (as opposed to tail-lights or no lights) so they should make it capable of detecting a blinker and (if it's relying on the vehicle instead of lane markings) disable auto-pilot automatically.

    • @bW9taeH4
      @bW9taeH4 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Adam Rath Some systems do. For example, Subaru uses stereo cameras that detect brake lights among other things. It can use that to detect both the lights and the distance. I have no idea whether Tesla incorporates that into their algorithms, but I can assume that they are well aware of what the rest of the industry does and have engineers working on every aspect of it. Disabling autopilot isn't the answer though. But the car will do exactly that in certain circumstances, flash a message in red that the driver must take control immediately, with loud beeps, and the driver will get that before the car loses ability to judge.
      Still, if the car can see somebody signalling, so can the driver, who should act accordingly. In most cases the lane markings would tell the car what to do, and locking on a specific vehicle was happening in low speeds.

    The car manual warns you not even to use autopilot in heavy rain, let alone snow. You not reading the manual doesn't mean that Tesla never provided this warning. Otherwise, I think it was a neat video showing how far the AP limits can actually be pushed in crappy weather which is pretty awesome.

    Nice display of Autopilot features. Typically, I would not use Autopilot in any situation where I would not normally use Cruise Control. Impressive that the car is as capable as it is, thus far... But with heavy traffic, rain, and also snow, I would never use Cruise Control. So, I would not have engaged Autopilot either. Really cool to know that it makes your commute that much better for you, regardless of conditions.

    Not having to put full concentration on the road is so more relaxing than to fully be aware of your cars position and always correcting that position. Studies show less mental stress actually relaxes the body. To correct for the lane marker technology all you need is metallic lane markers to be in bedded into the surface. Magnetic sensors could read the markers at a 100 ft or more. Further more the identification of the marker could warn on board system of potential hazards like curve ahead ..or stop ahead or a myriad of other road hazards could be identified by the shape or size of the marker.

    Fantastic report! I have a Model X90D and have been using autopilot for the last few weeks since I got the car. I noticed that the autopilot also has blind spots. The radar awareness is not continuous but appears to occur at a discrete frequency. I haven't measured it, but it is between 1 to 10 Hz. The vehicle uses its ultrasonic sensors to see side-wards. There are a pair of circular ultrasonic sensors on the left and right sides of the front bumper and another pair on the left and right sides of the rear bumper. It uses only these sensors to do autopilot and not the sensor buried in the rear doors (used for the falcon wing door opening). I have had a couple of cases where I tried to change lanes on autopilot and the car actually attacked another car in the lane it was going to go to - this is because that lane was initially clear but another car was going at high speed and passed me. If the speed of that bogey is very high it may be detected by the rear sensor but due to the slow refresh rate, it may not be detected by the front sensor. The car thinks there is no traffic in the other lane and try to cut into that lane. The vehicle also despite recognizing a motorcycle, doesn't give a longer following distance to it relative to a car or truck (what I would do if I was manually driving the car). It also doesn't recognize an idiot driving a pickup truck with stuff sticking out sideways that could intrude into your lane. So, yes autopilot is awesome and makes my 100 mile a day commute pleasant, but still remember that you are the pilot and despite it being on autopilot be ready to grab the steering/hit the brakes or whatever to take control at a moments notice. The system isn't perfect. It is still a Beta. But, after driving this in autopilot for the last couple of weeks, I can't go back to my ICE Lexus. Highly addictive. Highly recommended, but take common sense precautions. They aren't kidding (or saying this only for the lawyers) when Tesla wants your hands to be on the steering wheel. You are their test pilot. Have fun.

    If you look at 6:33 (dashboard shows a quarter circle showing something on the left side of the car) you can clearly see the Tesla did see the car on the left and was not going to make that turn. User error in the end. This is why we need this in all cars now! Good job Tesla...flawless system.

    Okay, but like, there's a reason why you still need a driver's license. You should still be monitoring your car to ensure it's driving safely and accordingly with traffic. The tech is obviously still new in the car industry, so you simply disengage the the autopilot feature as most manufacturers recommend during snow and rain.

    Many cars already have features that are available close to the Tesla Model S. I own a 2014 Chevy Impala 1LT (Not the fleet version that's been around awhile) and it has a decent amount of the features that the Tesla has, minus the autopilot of course. It detects vehicles in the same lane as me and has collision alert, where if the vehicle in front of me is close enough and starts braking, and I don't brake, the Impala will flash a red light and start braking for me. It also has blind spot detection, that detects all vehicles and motorcycles; it has lane departure, which warns me when I'm crossing into another lane (it doesn't warn me when I'm using my blinker to change lanes), so it can see the lane lines (unless they're covered by snow). It also has a feature called Stabilitrak that helps with vehicle stability, especially in emergency maneuvers (i.e. trying to recover from fish tailing).
    My point is that my car cost about $40K less than the Tesla, and still has some pretty cool and helpful safety features. I still drive as though I don't have them so I don't rely on them, but they definitely help me with being a safer driver. I wouldn't be surprised if these safety features become standard in the next 5-10 years and autopilot becomes something that's available/optional.

  • @iainmackie7064
    @iainmackie7064 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    OK, I'm getting it. Wherever possible Autopilot will use lane markings. When lanes are not available, or visible, it is now able to "follow" the vehicle in front (vehicle icon in dashboard turns blue). If I understand you, you are saying that if Autopilot is in "Follow" mode, then if the vehicle being followed changes lane, the Tesla will continue to follow it, and that people should be warned it will do this. OK, I guess there may be people who won't have worked this out. Very helpful to know that when the van image changes to blue, it is in follow mode.

  • @CSIG1001

    • @woo9914
      @woo9914 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +CSIG1001 If you take your hands off the wheel yes. but I am pretty sure Tesla says to not do that and to still keep your full attention on the road.

    • @bW9taeH4
      @bW9taeH4 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Woo 991 Even if you take your hands off the wheel, you would put them back on the wheel if you are paying attention. If you are paying attention and the driver in front of you isn't, you are better off with autopilot. If you aren't paying attention and the driver ahead of you is paying attention, that's not excusable but you'd be better off with autopilot. If neither of you is paying attention and you both go off the road, you might have killed yourself anyway without autopilot.
      The arguments against autopilot make less sense than arguments against cruise control, but modern cruise control has been around for almost 60 years and nobody here is calling it dangerous or saying not to use it. As long as you can take over control and you are paying attention, any feature that can keep you from doing something wrong could be a benefit.

    • @woo9914
      @woo9914 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      bW9taeH4 I honestly trust these auto pilot modes. however I would rather keep my own hands on the wheel because thats what the developers suggest.
      I am a huge supporter of these auto pilot features but i also think its smart to listen to Tesla when they say its not safe to take your hands off the wheel.

  • @henrytuttle
    @henrytuttle 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I drove a Tesla with auto-pilot for the first time (a P90DL!!!) just a few days ago when they gave me one as a loaner. I LOVE it. But as you say, there are issues with it.
    I don't like that the autopilot feature isn't better highlighted. I think there should be big flashing words that tell you when it's on. I've had a few situations where I had cruise control enabled and I thought that auto-pilot was on. I was holding on to the wheel so nothing happened, but I don't think should be confused about 'who is driving'.
    Second, it doesn't seem to see traffic lights. I tested this on a suburban street and the car was ready to blow through a red light without my intervention. It concerns me that if I were to accidentally exit a highway (I end up in a right lane that exits), it wouldn't stop for the stop sign or traffic light at the end of the off ramp.
    Further, it doesn't seem to 'be aware' of the speed of traffic ahead. When you accelerate from a complete stop, it accelerates rather quickly even if cars are at a complete stop just up ahead. This is not a safety concern FOR ME, but I'm not sure what people up ahead would think of a car rapidly accelerating towards them when they are at a dead stop.
    Mostly I love the auto-pilot. But I think it still has a few issues that need to be sorted out.

  • @sarevok6

    part of me is wondering if they are trying to use the data they collect to "permanently" teach the fleet where the markers are at. if they get everything in the country recorded internally the cars wont need to follow anything else. they would get updated constantly by driving when the lane markers arent covered by adverse weather.

    Excellent video! This is one of the few by a person who really understands the subtleties of Autopilot. Besides what you show, another version of this same case is when you approach an intersection, with the car in front shown as blue, and he changes lanes right inside the intersection. That is, of course, not a common thing, but it has happened to me. I agree both these things Tesla should address. I am doing similar videos if you want to check them.

    If you consider that the Tesla does not detect the lane markings when this happened, then from the logic of Tesla´s computer´s point of view, the truck is not changing lanes, but a car located next to you tries to crash into you. In other words: If anything, the computer thinks the car right NEXT to you is "changing lanes", while you are merely following your lane.
    This might be counteracted by having the computer consider the road maps of this location to check if the road is curved in this spot at all, and also tracking more than one car around the Tesla might allow the computer to realize the truck in front of you is changing lane, not the other way around. In any case - it is obvious this is a very dangerous situation!

    If they could install GPS repeater stations every 20 - 30 miles along the routes (perhaps on cell phone masts) it should be possible to resolve the ground position of the vehicle to 2 - 3 cm (one inch). Sensors perhaps combined with gyros could keep track of the vehicle's position when the GPS signal is temporarily blocked by bridges, buildings or high vehicles. With that in place, once the lane positions have been accurately mapped there should be no need to see the lane markings visually. Data on divertions and roadworks and even pot-holes could be collected in real time from other linked vehicles using the road.

  • @ThalassTKynn
    @ThalassTKynn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Awesome. Thanks for the video. I would guess that eventually Tesla would have the car try and keep the wheels in the dark tracks in the road - assuming that the lane markings are under the white lines to the left and right, with a white line down the middle of the lane. That's how humans guestimate it.

    I am struggling a bit to take your point. In your preamble you explain very clearly what it can and can't do. The weather is awful and many people will be impressed autopilot coped as well as it did. You foresaw a potential difficulty when the lane markings became obscured, and took over manual control when the truck changed lanes. So I am a bit confused. Are you saying autopilot should have been even better than it was? That a crash might have occurred had you not taken over control? Should you have taken back control earlier given the weather and that lane markings were going in and out of sight. You advise Tesla to issue a warning. About what? I am still not very clear.

    • @ricco831
      @ricco831  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Prior to the latest release of v7.1, when the lanes disappear, you would get a warning to take over the wheel as it didn't follow the path of the car in front of you. So you had to take over no matter what. Now with this release, there is a new enhancement that will follow the car in front (if visible by radar) when the lanes disappear. It actually follows the exact path of the car too, and this is where Tesla owners would be unaware that their car would switch lanes if the car in front switched. This happened to me on a clear day when lane marking weren't clear, so it had nothing to do with weather. This is the warning that Tesla should have given users with this release. If I wasn't paying attention to the car in front switching lanes, I would have most certainly side swiped the car to my left in this video.

    • @methaneorgan
      @methaneorgan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Ricco831 No that wouldn't happen. The Model S (and X) have radars, sonars and a front camera. The following would happen if theres a car directly besides you and the truck which the tesla has been following changes lanes:
      Your Tesla would have detected the car to the side and wouldn't have switched lanes. It would've waited till the car was gone. Since the truck would be on the other lane while that happens, the Tesla wouldn't have a car to follow and no lane to keep. So it would've automatically switched off Autopilot, sending you a warning that you have to take over. The Model S and X both are excellent at keeping you out of danger, you could consider them the safest cars out there.

    Wonderful video. I also think, but I am uncertain, that the Tesla tended to drift over towards the inside edge of your lane when the road curved and the lane markings were obscured. • @bW9taeH4
    @bW9taeH4 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's not quite true. Prior to 7.1, the display didn't show whether the vehicle in front was a truck, motorcycle or car. That doesn't mean the car couldn't tell. There are other things the car can sense, such as pedestrians and traffic lights, that the car won't alert you to because there's no specific programming available to the driver related to pedestrians or traffic light colors and it would be misleading to imply that the car would necessarily detect or react to something it's not programmed to do.
    Must made an offhand mention of the car's ability to recognize traffic lights, for example, back in October 2014, although he never mentioned that the car would do anything with the information.

    I'm pretty sure that these autopilot settings are not perfect, hense that situation you were just in. However as a person who doesn't work for tesla, i would assume that they store the information for examination when the driver grabs the wheel. Its not the best that you have to engage in spouts of attention due to danger, but, with all that new information gathered that normally wouldn't be gathered on a test course, the engineers could update the software as needed. Thank you for being a guinea pig for lack of better words, and i hope that this feature sweeps the nation as fast as expected. +Carlos Malave Doubtful. He didn't say that the cars in their current configuration would be able to do that and in the future there will likely be more sensors, including more cameras and/or more radar. Just because the car might be able to do it in theory doesn't mean that government regulators would let it happen. The software might be upgraded, but the hardware won't be able to be retrofitted.
