POV Tutorial: How to make classic early 90s Detroit Techno with Korg Volca FM, KeyStep, Roland TR-8

  • A short #POV #tutorial showing you how to create a classic early 90s Techno jam with minimal equipment in the style of Jeff Mills and the like. The result is by no means a finished track, but a solid foundation to be edited, arranged and mixed in any DAW. It’s just one melodic part and a drum track. I show you how to program a typical synthesizer line. The sound design for the Volta FM is done before and not shown, because it is a rather boring process of trial-and-error. But you can download the patch with the link below.

    Synthesizers:

    i love the fact that most of the old techno was make the most of what you have.

    So much better than modern over produced DAW techno. The 90s were the greatest decade to be young and go to techno clubs. No mobile phones, just people into it with no distraction.

      DAW have so many tools at hand which make producing so overkill and usually set an unnecessary high standard for artist. Think hardware! In the old days so many people start with nothing but a bunch of machine plays together, no money for studio nor expensive processing unit. People have to make the most use out of what they have, live tweak on the go and improvise, that's why oldschool stuffs have this organic feeling to it (in my opinion) that make it a staple of the genre. Slight offbeat and out of sync in the modern age is a error, in the old days it's a feeling.

    Nice sequence, solid pattern, good arrangement; that makes this track groove! Amazing!
    One question: is there any compression used here, particularly on the tr-8?

    • @JH-lo9ut
      @JH-lo9ut 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tr-8 has compression on kick and snare, both with their own designated knob. It sounds like there is some comp on the kick in this case.
      There is also sidechain built in to the tr-8, where you can route audio through the drummachine and apply side chain compression per step via the sequencer.
      Don't think he's using that feature in this video.

    • @Erhalder

      hello, of course you can record everything in ableton as long as you have enough inputs on your audio interface. in fact i also recorded everything in ableton, via the usb interface option on the mixer.
